The College chronicles

Today was the day, the day that I, Jill Quigley, would leave my small little town of Newbury, OH, and travel far away to go to college. How far away is it? you ask. Well, the drive from my home to college takes about 3 ½ to 4 hours, so I’ll let you be the judge of that. I’m leaving my nice little home, and going out of state, as I am going to be attending Eastern Michigan University. Go Eagles! Or, should I say, Go Green!

We left my house at about 7:30 in the morning, so we could get there at a decent time, but when we got there at about 11-ish, there was a line backed up into the road, for all of the incoming freshman. It’s a pretty big sized campus, so you can only imagine how many cars there were. And think, this was only the freshmen moving in. The upperclassmen didn’t get to start moving in until the next day.

So, my family found a spot and parked, so we could unload of all my crap out of the vehicles, since they were only allowed to park in that spot for half an hour so they could get more people in. So, I went into my building and got my keys, and my orientation packet. Yes, my college did not have orientation before coming here. That is known as Fast Track. Our orientation was to last for four days.

After I had received my keys is when all the bad crap started happening. Before I came here, my roommate and I talked, and she asked if I had wanted to switch to another room so that she could room with one of her friends. I, not caring, said yes. So that day, we were going to switch keys and everything. Little did I know that everything was about to be fucked up, pardon my language.

Well, I met the girl who I was to switch with, as we handed over the keys. I followed her to a different hall, and up the three floors of steps to what was to be my room. I was starting to unpack everything and try to get settled when one of the RA’s came into my room, and asked for Erin (the girl that was originally supposed to be in there). I said that she wasn’t there, that we switched rooms.

Little did I know, that us switching our keys was a bad idea, for we were supposed to go through housing to make room changes, but they never did. I thought that my roommate and her friend had it all set up so we wouldn’t have to go through anything, but I was wrong. I was told that I had to be in the room that was originally assigned to me, or else I would be in serious trouble.

So, not wanting to get in deep shit on my first day here, I packed up all my crap again, and headed over to where I first was. I hated walking so much, you wouldn’t believe. But that time, we used the elevators to go down instead of using the stairs, as today was a really hot day, and I really didn’t want to get any sweatier.

We walked back over to the first building, which is known as Sellers /Phelps, and my mom and I walked up to the front desk. I’ll spare you the boring details, but we talked to them about our situation, so the other girl was going back to her original room, and I was to be in mine. This all took about an hour to get done, and by the time that I was finally able to get into my room, I was exhausted, because I am on the 4th floor, and I had to climb up about five flight of stairs, since there is ground, then 1, 2,3, and then 4. Also, just the whole drama of it was also mentally straining.

What was even worse was that afterwards, I had to go get a shot. Yes, a shot, for meningitis, I believe it was. So, I got my shot, and then we were off to the Convocation Center.

Basically, the Convocation Center is where they play all of their indoor sports, like basketball and volleyball. It was also located right next to the football stadium, which is pretty cool. Being from such a small town, this was pretty exciting to me.

We went inside, and sat down in the bleachers. There were a TON of people there, it was so crazy! I felt like I was squished or something. I was sitting in between my sister’s bf and my dad. We waited there for like 15 mins before the opening ceremony to officially kick off the orientation started.

In whole, the ceremony was basically boring, since it was basically the Dean, and other board members talking to us, telling what a great year they expect and blah blah blah. But, there was one fun part of the ceremony. The EMU marching band was there. They introduced the Drum Major to us, and we got to learn the fight song! It was really exciting, but it was really fast, so I didn’t catch on right away.

It was finally the end of the ceremony, and what happened next was really abrupt, and I wasn’t completely ready for it yet. There were directions given out. All of the freshmen had a button with their name on it and a group number. We had to say goodbye to our parents right then and there, and then go to our group.

I’ll admit it, I cried. What else was I going to do? The first one from my house to go off and away to college. Sure, my older sister left, but she was still really close, like maybe only 30 mins away at the most. But no, I chose to go far away, to a college out of state and away from all my friends and family. My mom really cried too. My dad, sister and little brother were all fine. Hugs were given all around, and then we parted and I left to go look for my group. And off starts my college adventure.

(To those who are wondering, yes, this is basically going to be the tales about me and my first year here at EMU. The tales get more interesting as it proceeds, so i hope that some people are interested in it. So, please rate and comment if you want to hear more tales!!!)
