Twillight: Chapter Four

Carmen walked down the street with her helper, Amber.“Now, why did Kaleb pick you?” She asked the girl.
“I don’t even know, he just said I’d love the job,” replied Amber. She was no help to Carmen in this situation. She could easily succeed without the tag-along. She wanted to survive this though and if things got tough, she could let them kill Amber and not her. It was true genius.
John lifted his head from Jessie’s lap. He was badly wounded but didn’t care anymore. The dream that woke him was horrifying. It was a dream that everyone was dead. Everyone. And the dead bodies laid everywhere, but when he came across Jessie’s body, she wasn’t dead, she was a clone of a different kind; she looked like herself but simply dead. This frightened him greatly. The world was going to end because they weren’t strong enough to face this enemy. John heard voices, two females. One happened to sound like Carmen but the other; he had no idea who she was. The footsteps got closer and no one woke up. Then the door open and Carmen and another girl walked in.“Oh look, they’re all asleep. Isn’t that cute? Joey and Bree are all cuddled up next to each other. Get them now,” ordered Carmen. The mysterious girl walked over to the unsuspecting couple and pulled out a pocket knife… “What do you think you’re doing?” Joey snatched the knife, and jumped up. Bree followed his move. Carmen held up her hands, “Amber! Bad girl! These are our friends! They aren’t with you-know-who!” Carmen slapped Amber and waved her finger in Amber’s face. “Where’s Lacy,” asked Jacob. “One word. Dead. That thing what ever it is killed her. Cut her completely in half. You know there’s no stopping him. We all might as well give up now.” Carmen began to sob. Joey and John saw the lie. Carmen was a traitor.“Whoa people! Wait a minute. Carmen? How did you escape?” John questioned her and she new right then that he saw through the sobbing. “Uh… Um… About that…” Carmen stuttered and everyone knew by then that she wasn’t on their side. “I curse the ground on which I walk. The demons of the world collide. Love the ones closest to you, the evil will take them soon. I summon Hell’s Angels to do my bidding. Bring the ‘one’ to me…” Carmen dropped to the ground and placed her hands in a diamond shape. Black smoke rose from her fingertips and turned into clones, hundreds of them. And they began their attack.John withdrew his sword and so did the others. Some had shot guns too. This was going to be interesting. Kill the source, Jessie thought to herself. Kill Carmen, and get that girl too. Jessie kissed John because this could be the end of their lives, this little battle. The teams circled the clones. They may be out numbered but they had more intelligence. Carmen was trying to escape and Jessie saw that. She ran to the door where Carmen had escaped. Team 3 was already on her tail. Regan was closest and still gaining. She had more endurance than Carmen. She kicked Carmen to the ground and pulled out her Sais. In three swift motions, Carmen was dead. The black smoke poured from her body. “What the hell?” Regan coughed. The smoke was there instead of blood. “How could that be?” Regan dropped to the ground. “How?” She passed out and the rest of the team followed.
Jessie didn’t dare go any further. The black smoke was clearing now, and everyone lie on the ground, motionless. Jessie fell to the ground because she was becoming dizzy. Everything was so strange. The black smoke came from Levi, too. Did that mean he wasn’t dead? What was going on? She became lost in thought. Everything got fuzzy and she heard voices, then it was black.Daren saw what had happened. The black smoke. He had to check the other body. Daren ran to the storage closet hoping that his calculations were wrong. They were too correct. “We need to get the hell away from here, NOW!” Daren ran out, coughing and covering his mouth. Sean ran for the bus and told everyone else to do the same. “But what about the others? We can’t leave them, at least not Jess-I,” complained John. “I agree. We need Jessie,” added Daren. Sean rolled his eyes. He thought this was stupid because, he too, knew what the smoke was. “Fine,” he drove toward the scene of the accident. John jumped out and had Katie help. They picked Jessie’s unconscious body up off the ground and ran for the bus, coughing. “Damn smoke!” It was as if the smoke was following them. It kept coming their way. Following the bus all the way down the road…
Team 3 woke up to a startling surprise, hell on earth. Kingdom of their enemy. “Hullo there. I think you might know me and my lovely, successful, and trustworthy friends; Levi, Carmen, and Amber. Yes, indeed. This is my house. And soon, you will live here, unless you choose to help me…” the Devil spoke sharply, as if his patience was running out. “Hmmm… I will consider that… When I’m on my death bed!” spat Jacob. “Well then, if that’s what you wish…” The figure jumped down, revealing himself to his audience. Kaleb then grabbed Regan’s Sais and ripped into Jacob’s gut. It was a sight that Regan and the others didn’t have the stomach to handle. She threw up black bile. The smoke was within her, changing her. She soon figured it out. But by that time, it was too late for her and the team. They were slaves to his game, forced to serve under Kaleb’s power. But Regan was strong enough that she still had control of her body… This smoke wasn’t normal, they all knew that. But what was it really? Poison? Ash? Death itself? Only a few of them knew. Sean began to explain what the smoke was just like he did four years ago, “Zombie virus or clone virus; take your pick on the name but it's all the same. The black smoke is exactly what I was afraid of. Caleb figured it out or whoever is behind this. They contained the highly dangerous virus and set it free at just the right time. This could change us all.”Daren started to become enraged, “We should have gotten the others… I could’ve used them as samples and test subjects to find a cure…” “Use Jessie! She’s infected now! You can use her,” snapped Joey. John got protective right then, “No way are you going to poke her and cut her with needles and knives. No way. Forget it.” He held her tight as he started noticing the symptoms of the fever. “Oh no. This isn’t right. She’s not changing. What the hell is that?” Daren was pointing at the mark on her head. A cross. They knew she didn’t have tattoos and chose to have no religion but what was it?John ran his head over Jessie’s head. She was fevering. The mark was the hottest point. All of a sudden, a light flashed, blinding everyone including the driver, but didn’t phase his driving skills. The light came from the mark and once the light was weakened, it disappeared and Jessie woke up. “What? What happened?” She looked around in a daze. “That’s what I’d like to know,” Brittany said shaking her head. “I’m guessing it was a blessing of some type,” Sean walked over to Jessie and touched that mark. She slapped his hand away. “Yes. It is. But why you?” Sean stared at Jessie, waiting for an answer. “How should I know? I’m not the religious person here. So then why would I be blessed if I don’t care about God?” Jessie touched her own head wondering what the hell was happening now.
“Now, now. You all will serve under my power, is that understood?” Kaleb walked past Regan. “Yes sir,” answered Team 3. “Good. Your job is to catch the others, and bring them back to me. If you cannot catch them, then kill whoever you must.” Kaleb motioned for them to go now. Team 3 left but Regan did not. “Ah. What’s this? You didn’t understand those simple instructions? Well go!” Regan shook her head. “You’re wrong. They’re smarter than that. You’ll never catch the others. You…you monster!” Regan kicked Kaleb in the head, but the strike was too weak. “Foolish, Regan. You should know better.” Kaleb threw her to the ground. Regan didn’t move anymore, but she wasn’t dead. Yet.
John was wondering, wondering what he should do… There was no use fighting. They all were goners for sure. He thought to himself, I could get Jess-I and a few of the others to leave with me… It won’t work, he told himself, they’re all too stubborn, and they will always try to fight back. Right there, John made his decision. He would leave.“Oh no, you won’t!! Not without me!!” Jessie grabbed the sleeve of John’s hoodie. “I’m sorry. You can come if that’s what you desire, but I wish you’d stay in safety.” “I wish you would too, but no. You’re too stubborn,” Jessie turned her back to John. He took the chance to slip his arms around her waist and tickle her stomach. “Hey!” Jessie giggled and the couple fell to the ground against the wall. “Will you stay, please? I don’t want you to get hurt,” John tilted Jessie’s head up so he could look into her eyes. She could stand that worried look that he gave her, so she nodded, and he kissed her. John knew that this was going to be another 8th grade drama unfolding so he held her close. This time, he might not come back.
Carmen was having a change of heart. This was getting ridiculous. Carmen needed a plan. She didn’t like this anymore, all this killing was getting out of hand. She’d only meant to kill one, only one. She needed to talk to the Boss. The Boss had major issues; nobody could possibly explain him. Maybe just one word would explain it. Insane. He was completely out of his mind in this little game of a world. Maybe she should not have continued the mission as directed. Maybe she should’ve destroyed him while she had the chance. But that chance was gone now. There was one thing she could do to help her friends that she had hurt so badly. She knew that no one would trust her, so Regan became the hamster. She quickly began creating the antidote. Stirring and pouring the different chemicals together; she knew this would help, greatly. When she was done she popped a lip on to the vial of dark black liquid. Not pleasant looking but it would save the human race, or what was left of it. Carmen hurried over to the still unconscious Regan and slipped the vial into her coat pocket, along with note about the virus. It would save her friends. “I’m so sorry, my friends. Forgive me.” Carmen turned to the exit, lifting Regan on to her shoulder, she carried Regan outside and inserted the needle into her chest, she began to move but by the time she regained full health, Carmen was gone.“You fool!!!” screamed the voice, like nails on a chalkboard. A small, boney man sat slumped in the chair. “I can’t believe what I’m hearing. You want freedom!? You want freedom! I will give you freedom, you- you- you traitor!” The man stood shakily and waved something. A thick black fog rose from the grounded and headed toward Carmen.“You are the fool. I can’t be touched until I am freed,” Carmen stated with a greater power. The fog swirled on the floor, not even coming for Carmen. “You wouldn’t…” Carmen looked shocked at the little man. “Try me. Your soul is mine, Carmen. But now, you’re released. MUUUUUUHAHAHA! RUN, LITTLE GIRL!!” Carmen ran quickly, drawing her sword as she came in on the Boss, Kaleb, fast. She went airborne with the katana in hand, bringing it down upon Kaleb. It was too slow of a movement, or maybe Kaleb was simply faster, and Carmen’s attack was blocked. She fell backward into the fog. It burned her skin quickly; she hardly felt the pain because her body went numb, instantly. It ate away at every bit of flesh. Carmen was no longer living in this Hell, that was her last relief as she called out to Kaleb, “THEY WILL WIN! JESSIE WON’T LET YOU LIVE!!”The man smiled, watching Carmen become nothing more than vapor. Regan regained her strength, and thoughts, and founded the vial and notes concealed inside her coat. She was amazed by the fact that she was alive, but also the notes…and a letter? Regan opened it. Her jaw dropped at the more she read. Regan ran. She ran fast to the town. The others had to see this.
John was leaving, again, and Jessie wasn’t OK with it. She couldn’t stand the possibly of losing him again, but she also knew that there was no way to stop him, and he didn’t want the others to know. Although, she thought to herself, why don’t I tag along…? She knew why. She didn’t want to give up on fighting because her natural love for fighting. For God’s sake, she was a black belt, why hold back? John was staring at her now. Probably wondering was wrong because of the tears rolling down her cheeks. He wiped them away and asked, “Do you want to come?” She nodded, and turned away. This is ridiculous, she thought, they should stay with the others. But she also knew they were doomed. After all… There was no cure…It seemed that the whole teams were breaking up. They set out in different groups. This was the end, and no one could stop it. John and Jessie sat against the wall, holding each other tight. Katie and Aaron were even sitting close like a couple again, which they were. Everyone huddled together, although, Daren did not. He had failed to find a cure. This really could be the end of them all. Regan ran, and ran. This was important. This was critical. John had to know first, and soon. It was a good thing that Regan took martial arts. She could run lighting fast thanks to her endurance. As long as she made it to someone on the team, she’d get the message out. All she had to do was make it. And she’d never failed at the before.
John was getting restless, Jessie could tell. He didn’t want to stay much long. Instinct, she thought. He’ll pull through. All she had to do was be there for him, she didn’t want to risk losing the part of John that she worked so hard to open up. John stood up, “We need to leave, now! I have a really bad feeling. We at least need to check the windows, the outside.” Daren was already on it. He had the board cracked open. Daren started prying pieces off. “Daren! What are you doing?!?” Jessie grabbed Daren’s arm. He shook it off and went back to work. “It’s- Regan! She’s out there!” Daren flung the door open, letting in the red faced and huffing, Regan.Regan collapsed by Daren and handed John the vial, notes, and letter.John searched through the notes and handed them to Daren, “Run them.” John then opened the letter and read. He remained stone faced and cleared his throat, “Dear friends, I have no choice but to leave. The man that is behind this… He is evil. Pure evil. The vial contains the cure that you’ve been searching for. It will restore someone who is infected and it will prevent the infection from occurring. Now, I’m gratefully sorry for the deaths. There was only one death meant to be, and unfortunately, I failed. So I am of no use to the Boss. You must stop this psychopath from destroying the human race. Fight back or be eliminated. I might end up being the one to do it. But remember I have no choice. He controls my thoughts, but I do have a way of stopping it, and I will but first, I must speak with John, Jessie, Joey, Sean, and Daren. I have important information for each. I request that you come unarmed, no matter how very unappealing that sounds, it shall be worth your while. Bring the others if you find it necessary. Come to the main entrance of the school. I will be waiting, my dear friends. As always, Carmen,” John finished. “Interesting… Now will we go,” asked Joey. “Of course. Anyone disagree?” John looked around. Everyone, except Jessie, replied. “No.” Jessie just stayed silent. This is a trick, it must be, she thought. John grabbed her hand and reassured her that they’d all be fine. For now, that is.The comrades walked across the horizon. It was dusk, and they couldn’t hear anything but footsteps. Carefully, they crept passed the tall, terrifying trees. Shadows loomed among them, sending silent chills down Bree’s spine. She knew this wasn’t going to end well. Everyone knew that. But for some reason, John and Jessie weren’t speaking. Jessie was dead to the world. Something was most definitely wrong. This is where the scary theme music should drop in, but it didn’t. Instead they had the eerie silence following their every move. It was like death was stalking them… Then there was a scream. It was April. Something came out of the dark and tried to grab her. Too bad that something was only a tree branch. April laughed, so did everyone else. But John and Jessie just kept walking. If they skulked, they’d lose precious time. It got darker and darker as they move through the countryside. Jessie heard something and stopped stiffly. She listened, it was singing. Jessie lost focus and walked into the field. John had no idea what she was doing until he saw the glow coming off the field. A ghostly glow, terrifying. He focus his eyes on the shape directly in front of Jessie. What the hell is that? He thought. Then his heart took over and he tried to run into the field but only to be deflected and thrown to the ground. Everything got dark, really fast.
Jessie knew what to do. After all, she knew ghosts too well, and dealt with then too many times. Shimmering in front of her was a young girl, her age possibly. Blond and bond, this ghost was. She held out a hand, and offered to give Jessie a future vision. Jessie gladly accepted the invitation. Once she entered the telegraphic images flowed through her veins. Horrific was the only word that explained it. Haunting her mind with intense pain and fear. The dead bodies of all her friends scattered throughout the school. Caleb stood over John’s dying body holding the cure and teasingly waving it at her. The other Jessie in the vision ran at Caleb and drove a sword through his chest and brought it down directly on his neck, cutting his head clean off. Oh, but that wasn’t good enough for that Jessie, she went further. She chopped Caleb to pieces; anger flowed through her like a drug. She dropped down to John’s side. Tear-filled eyes looked around for help. No one left. No one to help. She took the pistol from John waistband and leveled it with her head. She sat down against the wall holding tightly on to John’s hand and put his arm around her. She kissed his cold dead lips and pulled the trigger. The future vision stopped when she heard the gun fire. The ghost bowed her little head and said, “Good luck, friend. You can change the coming events, as you know. But the last one will be the hardest. My prayers are with you, and take this.” The ghostly figure handed Jessie a charm bracelet; Skull, Heart, Rose, and Gun. “Thank you very much.” Jessie bowed and the ghost left. She slipped the bracelet on and ran to find John. She knew the force field wouldn’t allow him entrance and most likely gave him a nasty bruise and he was probably out cold also. No one would look for him, so she needed to find him, soon.
John woke up with a terrible headache, but that was the least of his troubles. Where were Jessie, and the others? He was lost. No one had waited for him and Jessie. Now they were both on their own, and knowing how pathetic his fellow classmates were, they were most likely spilt up too. He stood up shakily. The pain in his head was deafening. There was a little shimmer in the distant field. Jessie? He wondered. Then the sound of running approached his ears. It was Jessie and she was excited. “This, John, will save us all, or break us all. But all I know truly, is we must stop this ending from happening,” Jessie hugged John and pulled him in the direction of the school. Now they would find their lost comrade, or traitor.
Kaleb discovered Carmen’s little plan to help the teens after she would be killed; very clever on her part but also very stupid. He knew where she sent them and could kill them quicker this way. “Thank you, Carmen, you smart little girl. Now they will never be saved.” Kaleb smiled as the group approached his palace, the school. The fog rose as an automatic defense, he silenced it.The fog backed off and Jessie wondered; why did it back off? Why? It was obvious though. She knew Carmen…or better yet, Kaleb, must have done something. They were running into a trap. A complete trap and they were walking into it. Jessie stopped and tugged on John’s sleeve, “What if…it is a trap?” John shook his head, “No. I really don’t think it is a trap. Carmen still has her conscious left. I promise. We will be fine.” He took her hand and tried to calm her shakiness. Jessie knew, she knew this wasn’t going to end like she had hoped. They entered the school, searching with frightened eyes around the hallways. Still, everything was a mess, almost like a hurricane had torn its path through the halls. Jesse picked up a piece of paper. It had everyone’s name on it; ‘Dear John, Jessie, Joey, Bree, Aaron, Katie, Jesse, April, Sean, Daren, and Lizz, Follow the destruction to find the instructions.’ Jesse read it aloud. She handed it to John.He took it and crumpled it to pieces, “No worries. I know where she is.” John walked toward the auditorium with a distant, yet angry, look on his redheaded face. They all followed even though the fear running throughout their veins was enough to drive them into insanity. Bree’s head was down as she walked, not a good sign, Jessie knew. She moved over and whispered to Joey, “Comfort her; she’s not doing so great.” Joey turned to Bree and asked her what was wrong, so she broke into tears and didn’t hold back anymore. Holding in emotion could break you at the moment, Jessie knew that from experience. They entered their destination, and Carmen was nowhere in sight, only Kaleb. They all shivered with fear. The look in his eyes as her glared down at them made Daren shiver, even.“Ah, nice of you all to come on such short notice,” Caleb began, and made sure everyone was paying attention, and they were. “This virus, it is not what you think. It is an automatic death, Black Death. It comes in the form of liquid, gas, and even solid. It is true that it turns you into a clone, and it is true that there is a cure, of which I have right here,” he held up the vial of green liquid, “Not very tasty looking and not very tasty ether. But it works. I have tested it on your friends. It wasn’t very pretty though when it went wrong… I’m sorry about that. Right now though, we might want to take this, Jessie, because you are infected.” Kaleb threw the bottle to John and disappeared. Should they trust him? John thought about it… What could it hurt to try? Jessie took the bottle and sipped bravely. Within a few minutes she went white and began a fit similar to a seizure; coughing, shaking, then growing completely silent as the ‘remedy’ to affect. She eventually lost all color in her skin and her fright-stricken eyes turned red. Her muscles relaxed but the color didn’t change and she fell asleep.“Oh great! We’ll never get out of here at this rate!” Joey yelled and slammed his fist into the wall.“Calm down. I’m sure she’ll be fine but she needs the rest…so let her sleep,” Daren grabbed Joey’s arm before he could hit the wall again. John went over to Jessie (her face still white and eyes red) and propped her head up on his thigh as Daren sat down beside the two. “Don’t worry, John. I won’t EVER let anything happen to her.”“I know that but it’s my responsibility.” Comments
