Twillight: Chapter Two
|
Sean drove the bus down the high way; it was becoming dark out. Daren was fixing up Jessie’s wound as she slept. The pain medicine made everything easier for them both. As he walked to the back of the bus with a wet rag, the bus came to a shrieking halt, throwing Daren off balance.“What the hell?” commented Daren as he threw himself down into the seat next to Jessie and John. Sean came to the back, “I can't keep driving on five hours of sleep. Plus, we're safe at night. Now we'll sleep.” Sean sat down in the seat next to Caleb, and Joey and Bree shared a seat. Daren gave the rag to John, who placed it lightly on Jessie’s head and kissed her softly. “I’m going to be awake for awhile, of course, so I’ll take the first guard shift and maybe the second.” John said.Daren nodded, “Sure, but please do get some sleep eventually.” John turned to Jessie, who was sleeping soundly. He leaned her up against the side of the bus and slipped out of the seat. John walked off the bus and sat down in grass outside, the moon cast a dim light over pale face giving him the look of a vampire. Slowly, he drifted into his thoughts, watching the star twinkle above his head.A few minutes later, John heard movement in the shadows and withdrew his 9mm. He searched the dark, using his eyes because of his hearing loss. Then he saw a short, skinny shadow near the side of the bus. It was limp looking, like the colons.“Don't move, or I'll shoot!” He warned. “Really? You’d kill me? I feel so loved,” Jessie appeared from the dark, tears rolling down her reddened cheeks. She staggered a while then slumped down to the ground beside John, who caught her in his arms.“No…no. I’m sorry, Jessie. I didn’t mean to…you know I was a little frightened,” John hugged her tight but not too tight.“It’s no big deal…if you’re a little scared of the dark…or what’s in it! OooOoooo! Ghosties!” Jessie teased.“Yeah, right. You’re the one that’s scared of the dark!”
“Mhmm… That’s why I have you to protect me.” Jessie pushed him playfully and kissed his cheek. After tickling each other for a while, they stopped and just sat there. Both got lost in thought.“You know, John. I’m really worried,” Jessie broke the silence.“You know what, Jess-I? I am, too. But we need to just, let it go.”“Oh, so let him win? That insane freak?”“Not necessarily…”“Then what do you mean?”“Uh… Just don’t freak out. If we lose control, all the rest will be lost,” John hugged her tighter, “You would be lost.”“Well…I understand that, but how are we ever going to beat this?”“I promise you, we will.”“You promised never to leave me, too.”“I know, and I’m sorry. I had no choice. The fate of the world was in my hands and I failed, letting it slip through my fingers…”Jessie punched John’s shoulder, “No, it’s not your responsibility. It’s ours. Okay?”“Yes, but…” Jessie tipped John’s head down and locked lips with him and held it for what seemed like hours. After Jessie became weak again and slipped down into John’s arms, the others began to wake up.He rested his head against the side of the bus as Sean came drowsily out. “She’s feeling better, I assume?”“Eh…not quite. She still really shaky.” John replied.“Hah! That isn’t shaky. You should’ve seen her when you disappeared. Now that was shaky. She was so paranoid, you have no idea.”“I have my ideas…” he said, looking down at his girlfriend. He kissed her lightly and she yawned. “Morning, Jessie.”“Mhmm…morning. It’s it nighttime again yet?” Jessie said, sleepily“No, not quite, hun.” Bree said as she walked out, along with Joey. When Daren came out her automatically came over to check the bandages.“All good,” Daren smiled.“Good. Now I think I can walk,” Jessie tried to stand, but hopelessly, she fell back down. “Guess not.” She sighed.“No worries. I’ll carry you. You still haven’t gained any weight, so it shouldn’t be hard,” John laughed as he slowly put one arm around Jessie’s shoulder and back, then the other under her legs.
“But don't we need more people-” Joey was saying, “I mean. It’s going to be tough.” Bree had her arms wrapped around Joey and was resting but not fully asleep. “Jess, are you feeling any better?” she asked.Daren came up, “Don't make her talk. She still needs to heal. Now John, place her over here and you can stay by her side while I work on the wound some more. It might be painful but please relax and it'll be over quickly.” Daren quickly got out some odd shape tool. “Gah! That hurts!” Jessie reeled in pain. “That’s good you're feeling is back. Now relax again. I need to do some tests.” Daren pulled out a long needle. “No, no, no! No freaking way! You know I hate needles! Don't-” Jessie relaxed once the needle entered the skin. “Ah now, feeling better?” Jessie drifted into another deep sleep.“Grrr… They'll pay if she doesn't get better,” John gritted his teeth.“She'll be fine. The sleep is a good thing. I promise.” “I made too many promises. And I haven't kept them all,” John leaned back in the seat, resting Jessie’s head on his shoulder and he too, drifted into sleep with her.
Soon, the team reached Daren’s well protected home. Daren woke John but let Jessie sleep, so they both carried Jessie into the house and laid her down upon the couch beside them. “Okay, now. I have many weapons of which we shall need. You can pick your weapon of choice. But the twin swords/daggers are for Jessie. I promised to let her use them when we planned this in 8th grade. Now get to it. Also, the razor sharp sword is mine. Ha ha.” Daren dashed to his room and everyone, but John and Bree followed. Jessie still in deep sleep and Bree not interested at all because she knew Joey would bring her one, and sure enough, he comes hopping down the stairs. “Ha ha! I beat them all! Even Daren!” Bree motioned for him the throw the blade to her. “Uh- I think not. I don't want you to drop it and cut your hands off.” He handed the sword over.“Nice pick, Joe,” complimented John. “Ah, thank you.” Joey took a few playful swings at Bree and she did the same. “I win!”
It wasn't until everyone had their weapons that John went to Daren’s room, with the now awake and confused Jessie. Daren was grinning when John and Jessie walked in. “Eh now. I saved you the second best weapon, John,” he smiled and handed John a beautifully crafted sword. “Wow,” Jessie was stunned by its beauty, “Hey! What about me! Didn't forget, did you?” Daren just laughed. He dug into his closet, and pulled out the twin swords. “They're more amazing than I thought, aren't they, John? Now let’s see how well they work…” Jessie began taking swings at both boys; they were amazed because they never saw Jessie practice karate. They began swinging back and testing the black belt. She swerved with the blades, it seemed. Quickly, she blocked all their strikes.“You're amazing, Jess-I.” “Thank you very much, Johnny Boy. You’re not too bad yourself,” she knock his sword to the ground and wrapped her arms around his shoulders kissing him.
Once Jessie, John, and Daren arrived down stairs, they were caught in a fight. “Damn it, Kaleb! What the hell do you think you trying to do? Kill her?” yelled Joey. “No, but you know what, I'm about sick and tired of you defending her!” protested Kaleb in his loud voice. “Guys, stop it!” Jessie screamed at them. She walked down the stairs and grabbed Kaleb’s head while she motioned for Bree to get Joey away. “What is the problem now, girls?” she asked in a snobby way. “None of your damn business, little whore!” Kaleb grabbed her and threw her at the wall. “Kaleb!” Jessie fell to the ground in a lump. Bree let go of Joey and ran to Jessie’s side. Jessie lifted her head to say these words: “How could you? I thought you were my friend now. I thought…” She didn't say another word, just went out cold. “You…” John was pissed now, Joey was the same. They both had their swords out and Daren brought his out. Daren walked over to Jessie side and began to see how much damage was done. “You're… You're not staying here any longer…” Sean walked in. Joey was still in raged by Kaleb’s words, and took a swing at his head. Kaleb ducked, sending Joey to the ground. Just as Kaleb went to stab the sword through Joey’s chest, Sean put a bullet through Kaleb’s back. He crashed to the ground, the sword, barely missing Joey’s chest. Instead, it got his shoulder. Kaleb collapsed in on himself, becoming a lump on the floor of Daren’s living room. Green liquid, maybe his blood, oozed from the wound in his back. The group gasped in horror at the site.“He-he’s a clone?! How can that be?!?!” Sean dropped the 9mm that he held loosely is his hand. “Yeah…ummm…get a sample,” Daren ordered Sean. He went to get the sample, almost throwing up at the decay-smell that was coming from Kaleb’s limp form.
Daren cleaned Jessie old wound that opened when she hit the wall and then helped Joey, giving him pain-medicine and all. Sean took the sample and had John help clean up the blood and get rid of the body. “How? When did he get infected?” John asked, completely confused.“Maybe he left in the night, while we slept. I don't really know.”“But I was awake that whole time… Although, I did see someone, something moving in the dark…but that was Jessie…even though I thought I saw something behind her when she came into the light…”“Bingo, John. It’s not our fault. Kaleb had it coming after all these years.” Joey was sitting by Bree, who was keeping a close eye on Jessie and making sure no one got wise and decide to steal her best friend’s weapon. Ever since John had disappeared, Bree took Jessie under her wing like an older sister. “She’s been through so much,” Joey commented. He was concerned about one of his closest friends. “I know Jess well enough to know, she'll make it through. She’s a lot tougher than she acts. Believe me. Her emotional and metal strength is much greater now, and that has given her physical strength a major boost,” Bree calmly stated. Joey was doubtful but trusted Bree’s words, and Bree knew it. John was sick to his stomach. He couldn't believe Kaleb would do such a thing, he knew how much he cares about her. John came to a conclusion. It wasn't Kaleb speaking. It was him. The person that John feared most… And now he knew that they were all in danger of it. But what could he do? Turn him in and save the others but still get them killed in the process? No. He would protect them, with his life…
Jessie’s mind was racing, and she couldn't wake up from the dream. Or was it a dream? It seemed so real. Kaleb, Joey, and Bree. But why? Why would Caleb do that? She was so confused, and now the memories were pouring back, turning into dreams. No. They were nightmares. “Noooo!” Jessie was stuck in the nightmare. She could feel someone trying to calm her but it only made things worse. “Oh God, no!” The memories felt so real. She could even feel pain. “Jess! Jess! Calm down! It’s a nightmare, Joe! Go get John!” Bree grabbed the wet rag and placed it on Jessie’s head, it was thrown off again as Jessie thrashed around, completely out of her head.Joey ran out the door toward John and Sean who were busy talking, “John, get in there with your girl! She’s having another nightmare!” He ran and threw John toward the house. John was now confused but by the look on Joey’s face, he knew it was bad. He rushed in to find Bree trying to comfort Jessie, trying to wake her. John ran over and kneeled down by Jessie and grabbed her hand. When Jessie felt this, she freaked. “Calm down, Jess-I. It’s me, John. You're fine now. Nothing will hurt you…” he calmly soothed Jessie and awakened her from her sleep. She was crying and wrapped her arms around John, sobbing, “It was… It was memories… Terrible, terrible memories… I thought I got over it…” “Don't worry now. You're fine. Don't worry.” John stood and helped Jessie up. He grabbed both of her hands and wrapped them around his neck while giving her one of her favorite kisses, the soft and sweet one. “I'm so sorry I got so upset…” “It’s not you fault, Jess-I.” “But it is. If wouldn't have…done what I did…I wouldn't have this….these.....memories…” “Don't worry. I love you, no matter what.” They kissed and walked over to the couch. Daren came into the room with a hand full of papers that looked like nonsense to Joey and John.“What’s that?” Joey asked, and Daren looked at him like he was joking. “You must be kidding… They're the results from my testing… And it’s a bit scary if you ask me…” “Well then, explain to us, but dumb it down for the two boys,” Bree and Jessie exchanged grins and the boys rolled their eyes. “Mhmmm…” added Jessie, “Well, ladies and gent. You'd be the gent, Johnny Boy.” She smiled, but Bree took it personally. “I'll have you know that I don't date girls, so Joe is a guy. I hope…” Bree and Jessie giggled. The boys just looked at each other, not caring anymore. “Okay, enough joking around. Now really, Daren. Explain the problem.” Daren looked around to make sure he had everyone’s attention, and he did. “Now, this is a very disturbing result from my testing. Kaleb didn’t have a single wound on him, besides the one Sean gave him, and he never showed any symptoms of the virus, therefore, I have concluded, that-” John stood up, letting go of Jessie’s hand, “That Kaleb wasn't there to begin with…” He had finished the sentence for Daren. Kaleb was missing.“Well, I'll be damned. How did you know?” Jessie, Bree, and Regan knew exactly how he knew. John was more involved than them combined. “It’s complicated…” “Well, start explaining, and I'll help because I knew too,” Jessie jumped in. “Me too,” Bree added. “Well then, all three of you explain, because I'm in the dark,” Joey scratched his head. “Fine,” they looked at each other, wondering how they knew. “Well, it starts out when I left… I was sent a message from a secret organization that said ‘You have 2 days to reach our base in Japan before we sent a dreadful illness to wipe out the whole U.S. and here’s another good reason, the information and task we have for you will help you greatly. You'll be rich, enough money to buy that engagement ring for Jessica Renee. Yes, we know everything about you and your little friends. They will be the first to die if you don't reach us in time. I hope you make the right decision.’ The voice in the message was robotic and fuzzy. The digital image of the tall dressed in black figure gave me chills. I didn't tell anyone, like I should have. And I regret that now. This isn't some drill in 8th grade. It’s real now and they know everything about us. I should have told you all sooner. I should have told you, Jess-I.” “Wow. That’s just… Damn.” commented Joey. “Well, then I guess it’s my turn to talk about my talk with that man… Remember when the clone took Regan and I?” Everyone nodded. “Okay. He brought on the thought that, maybe, there’s something in all of use that he needs, so he can rule.” “Yes, you're half right,” John confirmed. Bree nodded too. The whole group went silent, pondering different ideas. “He knows who we are and what we've done, he just wants us to face up to our mistakes because it will most likely make us all go into depression and then he'll have power over us,” John said in an assuring voice. “Yes, yes. This all might be true, but we need more people at our side,” Daren complained. John and Jessie looked at each other. They knew who they where missing. Together they said, “Team 2.” Comments
