It’s been four years now, since John Carter disappeared.  Jessica Fromholz, a clever, yet extremely sad girl, continues you have reoccurring thoughts of her 8th grade boyfriend that she missed so much more now than ever.  It was graduation day, all the students were having the time of their lives; food fights, pranks.  You name it, they did it.  This was the last time to enjoy the free favors of being a ‘kid’, but that, unfortunately, wasn’t what Jessie was doing. You know, Jess, you really are a mess.  Maybe you should have taken your little sister’s idea and seen a counselor.  Too late now.  You’ve got no heart left to explain your problems.  Just give up.  You’re done for, her inter-self told her.The bell rang, shocking Jessie out of her fantasy land.  Oh hell, now you’re going to be late for the celebration.  Why are you even going?  What are you going to say to those ‘friends’ of yours when they see you like this?“Would you just shut the hell up?!” Jessie yelled at herself, getting looks from the few classmates still in the room and the teacher.  She gathered her books and began to leave the room, teary eyed with her head down so no one would notice.“Miss Jessica, please come here.” The teacher said, coolly.  Jessie turned to the teacher and faked a smile while trying to make her feet move.  Left, right, left.“Ummm…  I’m so sorry.  I mean…  You know…  It’s just…” her voice trailed off.“It’s okay.  This will just be a warning.  Please, for my sake and yours, don’t slip again.”“I promise.  Bye.” Jessie hurried out into the hall and headed for her locker.  Just as she was thinking about where the others were, Jessie turned the corner to be confronted by Bree Cole, Joey Holloway, and Sean Hensley.“Hey Jessie.  What’s the hurry?” Joey asked in a nosy tone of voice.Jessie shrugged as she darted past them.  Bree followed her and the boys just rolled their eyes beginning to start a heated debate about their thoughts of a zombie uprising, again.“Ignore him, Jess.  You know how stupid they can be.  Now really, what’s wrong?  If it’s about John and you don’t want to talk about it then just nod.” Bree comforted her.She nodded and looked away toward her locker.  Walking over to it she said, “Yeah, that’s what’s wrong, Bree.  I’m sorry.  I’m still a mess…probably always will be.  It’s just not the same.” Punching in the combination, she continued. “I’ll be alright though.  Don’t tell anyone, please?”
Bree nodded and motioned for the boys to go on ahead.  She helped Jessie put away all of her books into her bag so she could leave quickly when the celebration ended.  Silently, the two walked down the hall to the gymnasium full of childhood friends and fools.
John Carter parked in the same spot he did four years ago.  Hurriedly, he organized his papers and folders of information and safely stacked them into a slim black suitcase.  As he fiddled with the 4 different locks on its opening, he threw up his hood.  Hmmm…  It’s been so long since anyone’s seen me…  Thoughtfully he grabbed the one memory he had; a picture of all of his friends in 8th grade.  All of them smiling, making funny ridiculous faces and doing some of the crazy things they use to do.He knew that he’d best not forget to load his 9mm and stick it into the waist line of his jeans.  Before John exited the car he looked around.  No one to be seen but that didn’t mean he wasn’t being watched.  You just never knew these days, did you?  Slowly, the door creaked open and then shut with the same faded sound.  The blacktop was hot; you could see the heat radiating off of its tarry surface. The sun’s bright light was blinding.  At least it doesn’t create sound waves or else I’d be any deafer, John commented to himself.  No one seemed to be in the hallways as he entered the school.  It actually had a certain, chill in the air.  Quite creepy; the kind of thing you’d feel right before something bad was going to happen.
But John and his ignorant self ignored that feeling.  It should bother him after everything else.  The soothing calm and quiet was welcoming.  He didn’t no if he should be worried or relieved that there wasn’t a single person around.  Maybe they were safe…
Jessie and Bree finally reached the gymnasium and Jessie was now smiling.  Joey guessed his girlfriend had succeeded again to get Jessie into a good mood.  He still wondered, What’s her secret?  He decided he would ask her, “Hun, wow, how’d you do it?”“I listened to her.” Bree stuck her tongue out at Joey, who was completely confused on whether she was joking or not.  He just decided not to push it; he knew exactly how easily Bree could be irritated.“Well…  Okay.  If that works, then whatever.” Sean stood by his confused friend, staring off at the people that surrounded them.  Sean looked over in Jessie’s direction shaking his head, “She’s gonna be alright, right?”“Of course.  She’s stronger than you think.  It’s just really hard to get over something like that…”  Bree said cautiously as Jessie sat down on the bleachers.  “She will.”

The silence was broken once John got to the gymnasium.  Voices, several of them, all of them screaming and yelling.  Many of the people were crowded into large groups with conversations about everything you could think of.  Most were laughing and smiling, giving high-fives and playful smacks.  A few people stopped their gossiping to glance at him but then shrug as if he was just some person in a hood.Although one girl (blonde hair, dressed from head to toe in Flyleaf with a green heart shaped pendent and a little diamond ring, by the looks of it, of her left ring finger) was staring directly at him without a single blink.  She dropped her stare first and retreated to listening to her friends speak; a red haired, skinny boy, pale skin and dead, soulless looking eyes, almost vampire like; a black headed boy with a Pirates of the Caribbean hoodie on; then a short, long haired blonde with guitar earrings with a big, sparkling, blue and black guitar down one of her pants’ legs.  The little blonde that was sitting near the corner seemed to be frightened and this interested John.  It reminded him of his strange 8th grade girlfriend, so he decided to greet her.Casually John approached the bleachers with his hood still up.  He walked up the steps confidently even though he was excited.  Could I be right? Jessie shivered.  What in the world could this person want from me?  Stay calm.  You’ll be fine.  He just wants to be friends, she silently told herself, still shaking.“Hello…  Could your name possibly be Jessica Renee Fromholz?” the boy asked. He’s creepy.  Not only does he know my first name…but last and middle?!  What the hell?  Jessie just nodded and looked up at the figure masked by his hood.Jessie flinched when the boy took his hands to his head. “Oh, I’m sorry.  I didn’t mean to scare you.  I just thought I’d let you see my face.” Slowly, he removed the hood, relieving his red hair and bright eyes.“John...” Jessie breathed.“Don’t worry yourself about where I’ve been and why I’m back, all that matters is you have no need to worry anymore.  I told you never to worry about me to begin with…”“I’m sorry…  I just…  It was so sudden.  One minute you were with me, the next you were gone…  Four years.  That seems so long when you worry about someone and wonder…”“I should be sorry.  I could have brought you with me but you too would have been in danger and I didn’t want that.”“Well…  You’ll need to explain that…”“To everyone.” Daren finished.  He sat down next to Jessie watching John carefully.“I will…in good time.” John stared intently back.Daren nodded and leaned back against the wall.  Jessie could tell, he was skeptical.

“God, this is boring…” Joey yawned and leaned into Bree’s shoulder.“Get over it.” Jessie said uncaringly. “We’re all in the same boat so don’t complain.  I rather not hear it.”“Too bad.  You’re going to hear it because I’ve got some complaints, Miss Fromholz.” A voice huffed from behind Jessie but no one was there.  “As a matter of fact, I have complaints for you all.  He he.”“What the hell?” Daren said looking around frantically.“Oh great…” John growled.  He slammed his fist into the air behind Jessie.  Suddenly they heard a loud smash come from that direction and jumped.“John?  What did you do?”“Let’s get out of here, now!” John yelled.  He grabbed Jessie wrist so hard that it shot pain up her arm.  She didn’t care because at the moment she was paralyzed with fear as several thin, skeleton-like creatures entered through the back.“Come now, Jessie!  Please don’t fall for it!” John cried trying to get her to move.  Suddenly the ability to move her legs came back and just in time, too.  The two ran through the crowds of people; there was no way to help them since they didn’t listen when infatuated with the dimwitted buddies.  So they just pushed them aside and let them slow the creatures down.  Once the door to the outdoors was visible John’s pace doubled, as well as the others.Once outside John had Daren and Sean see who all made it out with them.  There was Levi, Regan, Dylan, Jacob, Kaleb, Ben, and Emma.  “Wowie, that’s not many.  We’re going to need to go back in and search for others.” Daren exclaimed.“Possibly.  We’re fine for the moment but we need to get hidden.” John replied.
Daren nodded his head in agreement.
Five hours later the teens appeared from out of one of the buses.  Everything was quiet without anyone around, it seemed.  The sun was now going down and cooling the air around them sending chills down Jessie’s spine.“Let’s get going, people.” Daren walked out ahead.“Hey!  Be careful or you’ll get lured into a trap!” John warned the unsuspecting boney boy ahead of him.“Well then…” Regan exited the bus but was cut off by a figure with one large blade in its right hand…or claw. “What the hell?” Swiftly, the figure grabbed her by the shirt and slammed her into the bus.  Jessie ran toward the figure clasping its neck.  With powerful force, the shadow-like creature flipped Jessie over and dragged her and Regan away at enormous speeds.“Hey!” Jessie swung her leg around to the back of the figure and smacked her heel into the back of its knee.  The force was just enough to get it off balance, giving them both the ability to escape.  No sooner than the shadow hit the ground, it flung its arms back into a low clothesline that hit Regan and Jessie directly in the chest.Without the breath to scream or struggle the two were hauled off quickly.

John ran off after the figure, followed by Daren, Joey, and Bree.  It was running fast than they thought was humanly possible but of course, this was no human.  It could only be one of the super clones.  Daren knew that Jessie was probably going through the worst asthma attack ever because he heard the blow that she and Regan took to the chest.  She just hung there, limply, in one of its arms.  Regan was moving a little again and lifted her head enough to shake her head, telling Daren not to come, but he ignored this.  He looked over at John who was grabbing a pipe of some sort.“Good idea, John.” Daren copied his move.  Now they were at least fifty yards from the school and closing in fast.Daren and John ducked behind on side of the doorway, Joey and Bree at the other.  Slowly, they peeked into the hall.  Around the corner came a tall, freakishly tall, man in a pitch black outfit; not quite a tux.  He relieved what looked to be a katana from his back and dragged it across the ground as he walked.  The only sound to be heard was his big boots making a clicking as he shuffled down the hall, cautiously, as if he knew they were there.“Ah, what do we have here?  Regan Glancey and Jessica Fromholz…mhmm.  Well, I’ve been expecting you.” The man paused and grabbed Jessie’s chin. “Are you listening to me, my dear?  I would hope so.  Open your eyes!  See your new leader and be polite, little girl!!” he shook her violently until she stood, eyes still closed. “I said, ‘Open’!” the man’s powerful, big hand came crashing into the side of Jessie’s face.  Her knees buckled and she fell.  “Come on, little miss.  I thought you were some ‘fighter’?  You look like a pathedic little girl who needs her boyfriend to protect her.  Are you that defensless?  Do you have no pride?  Get up!”Jessie coughed up blood and looked at Regan, seeing the horror in her eyes, the fear.  As she stood, moving her hair slightly to reveal her cut lip, she mouthed to Regan, ‘I will distract him while you get that katana.  I will loosen him grip but be speedy fast!’Rising more Jessie looked into the cold, amused eyes of this man, so cold.  Cold chills rapidly made her shiver but he went to swing.  Quickly Jessie ducked down, Matex style, and used what was left of her energy to sweep him off his balance but not feet.  Regan got a hold on the katana raising it high above her head.  Suddenly a flash of light appear and visibility was lost.  The katana hit nothing and Jessie screamed.Half blind, John and Daren rushed in.  Daren took the katana as John went to Jessie.  She was bleeding still from her lip but otherwise, she was okay.  Regan was horrified by what had taken place so Daren reassured her that they’d be fine.  As Jessie regained her strength to walk John looked around wondering what just happened.“That was so, so ridiculous…” Jessie coughed out a little more blood.  She was trying to rest her head by John but just couldn’t because of her stiffness.“No worries, for now at least.  We do need to get going back to everyone else.” Joey explained.“You left them alone?  With that freak on the loose?!?”“Correction, he’s a nutjob and no, I didn’t leave them alone.  They’re just fine.”“You don’t know that…” Jessie said accusingly.

Back at the bus, Sean sat patiently but irritated by Jacob, Dylan, and Kaleb.  He wondered when they’d be back and if he should send someone in search of them. Not ten seconds after that thought ran through his head, a group of people came walking out of the school.  Jessie was limping, only slightly, with John and Daren’s arms supporting her.  Then Regan was walking close to Bree and Joey just in case lost balance.Glancing in Kaleb’s direction, Sean noticed the almost disappointed look on his face and knew there was going to be some smartass comments follow it. “Hmmm…  Looks to me that someone’s a cry baby.” Kaleb chuckled at Jessie who had dried tears on her cheeks.“Fuck you.” Jessie swore.“No thanks.  That’s your job for John.  As a matter of fact, go screw your girlfriend, John.  We’ve all had enough of her clinginess.  Keep her on a shorter leash.”“Why I oughta!”“I will, Kaleb.  Your just jealous because you only get homosexual guys.” John snapped, calmly.  This wouldn’t fly with Jessie and she tried to use a little strength to kick Kaleb’s ass. “Not worth it, Jessie.  Don’t.”“That’s right, Jess-I.  Listen to your guardian angel.  Just remember, he won’t always be there to protect you.” Kaleb snickered.“More like he won’t be that to protect you.” Spat Jessie.More silent laughter from Kaleb.  Jessie was trying to contain her anger so she looked away from his evil eyes.  John led her over to the bus to sit down for a moment before they’d go in.“Jessie, are you okay now?” John asked.“Yes.  Why is he such a jerk sometimes?”“I don’t know.  No one really knows but it’s not going to change, so get use to it.  You’ll be fine because you can beat him if he tries anything.  I know you can.”Jessie smiled and hugged John. “Thanks.  I love you.”“I love you, too.” The two walked back over to the group; another argument was brewing.

“You’re really starting to piss me off.” Daren said sternly.  Kaleb was leaning up against the wall of the school, laughing silently again, only difference is he looked angry.“Hah. You’re pissed off at me?  Wow.  I never would have guessed.”“I’m warning you Kaleb.  Stop this.”“Oh really. You want me to stop?  And what exactly did I do to you?” Kaleb was grinning fiercely.“We want you to stop the sarcasm you have with all of us.” Jessie entered.“Go to hell, bitch!” Kaleb snapped and tilted his head up looking directly into Jessie eyes. For some reason a great fear struck her.  Something was gravely wrong. “Daren…  Don’t…” Daren was walking toward Kaleb with the pipe in his hands. “Daren!!”A gun was fired from beside Jessie, it seemed.  Kaleb’s head disappeared into blood, his body slammed into the wall.  Daren was lying on the ground covered in blood, he shook violently from fear.  John blew the smoke from the top of his revolver and stuck it back into his waist band.“Daren!” Regan hurried over to help him up.“Whoa!  Where’d he go?” Joey questioned when he looked to where Kaleb had been.“Right here.” John pointed to the real Kaleb. “That was one of the creatures that entered the school, except, it was a shape shifter.”“Mhmmm…  I bet.” Jessie eyed Kaleb suspiciously, and walked away from him.“He’s not lying.  I am real,” Kaleb assured with a grin.“How can I believe you when you’re such a brilliant liar?”“Because you have no choice.  By the way, oh-so-clueless-and-helpless one, there’s an arrow headed your way…” Kaleb warned at the last second.  Jessie turned around (not a smart move) a moment too late.  The arrow struck her in the chest.“I…hate…you…” Jessie collapsed to the ground at Kaleb’s feet.“Yeah, you’re just so intelligent, Jessie,” Kaleb walked away, allowing Daren to assist John with getting Jessie to a safe spot from their unseen friend.“Don’t worry, boys.  It only wanted Jessie, for now,” Kaleb laughed, shaking his head in disgrace because of Jessie’s stupidity.  “Anyone, in their right mind, would’ve dodged that by bending down, not turning to face it.” “Jessie is not like you!!” Daren yelled. “She actually has morals!”“Morals are for fools.  She’s a fool and you’re a fool for helping her.”“Just shut up and get in the damn bus!” John ordered.“Sure, and you can go screw Jess-I.  Where I don’t have to watch, thank you very much.”“Go to Hell.”     “I would but, idiot, we’re already there.” Kaleb said in a smartass-tone. “By the way, hero-boy, fuck you.”
“No, thanks.”
