The Final Chapter...ch.3, part 1
|
"Good morning, beautiful", Frank said as he sat down at the kitchen table.
"Morning!", Pat replied as she took a gulp out of her glass of milk.
"I can't believe our two year wedding anniversary is only three and a half months away", Frank announced. "It doesn't seem that long ago that I married the most beautiful woman in the world."
"I still can't believe our parents supported us. I thought mine would give me a lecture on how I was too young to get married, but they didn't and I couldn't be happier!"
"I'm just glad they helped us out with this apartment", Frank said, nibbling on a piece of toast that Pat had just given him.
"Me too. It turned out to be a really nice place after all. It's just SO hard to keep up with paying the rent and all the bills. I don't know HOW my parents did it!", Pat said.
"I'd sure like to know how my dad managed to keep up with this many responsibilities by himself for all these years!", Frank agreed.
"I know! But, I'm sure things will get easier once we both get out of college. I mean, it's really hard for both of us to keep up with classes, studying, part-timejobs, and still manage to have time for each other", she said as she placed a plate full of eggs and bacon in front of Frank.
"Oh, what would I do without ?"
"Starve!", Pat answered, laughing.
"I don't doubt that for a moment. By the way, do you have any classes today, Pat?"
"Nope! My journalism class isn't until tomorrow and I'm off today, so I'm going to relax and maybe even study", she smiled.
"You know, I keep getting the feeling that there's something important I was supposed to do today..I didn't mention anything to you, did you?", Frank asked hopeful.
"No.. sorry", she apologized. "Oh, but I do have that doctor's appointment. It's just a regular check-up though. Nothing important."
"That's it! I promised you I'd take you", Frank said sympathetically as he stuck a forkful of eggs into his mouth. "I'm sorry. I can't even drive you. I have to work today.", he apologized.
"That's ok, don't worry about it. I told you, it's just a regular check-up", she reminded him."I can always reschedule or just drive myself!", she laughed. "Seriously, you worry too much. I'm not helpless, ya know?", she replied as she continued laughing at her worrysome husband.
"Yeah, but don't you still have the flu?"
"I'm sure I'll be fine", she said reassuringly. "You seriously worry too much."
"I don't think so. You've been sick for like, a month now.. doesn't that bother you? Most people get over the flu in a couple weeks, at most!", Frank insisted. "I'm just a little bit concerned", he said.
"I'm going to be fine", she repeated. "You'll see... now, get yourself to work before you get fired!", she joked.
"Yes, ma'am!", he answered as he rose up from his chair.
He grabbed his coat and kissed Patricia goodbye on her cheek.
"Bye, sweetheart!", he called, halfway out the door.
"Bye!", she answered back. "I'll see you this afternoon when you get home."
With that, she closed the door behind him and relaxed on the sofa.
Later that day....
"Mrs. Cole?", Dr. Peters asked as he approached Patricia.
"Yes?", she answered.
"I'm sorry you had to wait so long on the test results but we HAD to be sure."
"Be sure?? Of what??", she asked, suddenly concerned. "You know, my husband had a feeling that something was wrong and I told him he was worrying too much! Now, I have to go home and tell him he was right?!" She hung her head down, knowing how worried Frank would be NOW that she had to go home to deliver bad news.
"Mrs. Cole, I assure you, there's nothing to be alarmed about. Actually, I think you'll be quite pleased with what we've learned."
"Pleased? What do you mean?"
"Well, Mrs. Cole... it looks as though your flu wasn't a flu at all. Actually, your nausea and vomiting was your body's way of telling you that it was carrying an extra passenger", he smiled.
"An extra passenger?", Patricia asked suspiciously. "You mean, I'm pregnant?!"
"It appears that way", Dr. Peters smiled.
"What?!", she asked, astonished and ecstatic at the same time.
"You're going to be a wonderful mother", Dr. Peters answered. "According to the test results, you're about two months pregnant."
Her eyes lit up with amazement as she searche for the words to say next.
"I'm... speechless!", she finally said. "Absolutely speechless". 'Oh, Frank is going to be so happy when I tell him.', she thought to herself. 'I just hope he's not upset about the timing. We're so busy lately already'., she continued thinking to herself.
"Thank you SO much Dr. Peters", she said, trying to hide her worries. "I'll call you later on this week and we'll work on scheduling our next appointment", Dr. Peters responded.
That night...
'I have to make this night perfect for Frank', Pat thought to herself as she lit the candles on the kitchen table.
She went to the living room and li three more candles, placing them on the coffee table and around the cd player. She leaned over and cued up the player to play their song, "I'll always be with you" that she anticipated playing as soon as Frank walked in the door.
She waited patiently by the window and waited for Frank's car to pull into the driveway. It was killing her to know this HUGE news and not be able to share it with him yet. So many thoughts were going through her mind. 'Babies are SOO expensive', she thought. 'What if Frank doesn't want to have a baby just yet. It hasn't been that long ago since we got married and now we're adding another one to the family.', she thought. "Geez, we were JUST talking about it this morning about how busy we've both been. Will we be too busy to take care of a baby? Well, we have to keep him. Frank wouldn't want to give it up or anything! That's just not a possibility. I just hope he's not angry!!", she thought aloud as she watched that familiar red-colored mustang pull into the drive.
She grabbed a can of Vanilla air freshener and sprayed it throughout the room. Then she hit 'play' on the cd player and turned off the lamp in the living room as Frank opened the front door.
"What's all this?", he asked as he opened the closet door and made an attempt to hang up his coat.
"I've got a surprise", Pat said as she walked over to Frank and led him towards the sofa.
"This must be a big one otherwise you wouldn't have gone to so much trouble", he smiled.
"You're right about that, Frank. Now, sit with me on the sofa while I tell you about my surprise... You're going to need to sit down anyway after you find out!", Pat said, hoping that if she delivered the information as 'good news', maybe any chance of him being angry would fly out the window.
"Fin out what?", he asked suspicously. "What do you mean I'll need to sit down?"
"Never mind.. listen, I went to Dr. Peter's office this afternoon and it turns out that I am absolutely fine and I don't have the flu."
"That's great, sweetheart. I guess you were right and I was worrying about nothing", Frank laughed.
"No, actually I was wrong."
"What? Ok, it's official. I'm totally confused.. I'll bet that's what you wanted!", he said sarcastically.
"Then let me explain", Pat began, "I don't have the flu...."
"We just established that," Frank laughed, "and I'm glad that you're feeling better too."
"Well no.. I'm actually going to get worse."
"What?! I thought you said this was GOOD news?!", Frank said, feeling a bit agitated.
"It is!", Pat answered. "Actually", she said as she held Frank's hand, "I'm having a baby."
His eyes were as wide as baseballs and his mouth seemed to drop all the way to the floor. Closing his mouth slowly and feeling the tears well up in his eyes, he grabbed Pat and pulled her close to him.
"Just when I thought you couldn't make me any happier..", he broke off and his tears fell upon Pat's shoulder. "You've made me the happiest man alive", he said. These words brought tears into Pat's eyes, realizing that she'd been silly to ever think the news would be anything but good to her husband's ears. Such relief and solace she found in her husband's arms.
"Oh my gosh!", he yelled out suddenly.
'Oh no', Pat thought to herself. 'It's hit him how hard this is going to be'. "What?! What is it, Frank?", she asked, feeling slightly hopeful.
"I'm giong to be DADDY!!!", he caled out. "I'm going to be a DADDY!!", he repeated excitedly.
He stood up and pulled Pat to her feet as well. He leaned toward her, kissing her passionately, then sat back down on the couch and held Pat in his arms for the remainder of the night.
