The Final Chapter...ch.2, part 2
|
"So, you never told me what school you were going to, Pat", Frank reminded her. "Oh, sorry. I'll be going to Riverdale High", she answered. "Really? Cool. I go there. I'm a senior."
"Cool. Are you eighteen then?," she asked. "Seventeen, actually. But, I'll be eighteen in three months." "Oh.."
"So, how about a coke?", Frank asked as he pulled Patricia's chair out for her.
"Sure! A coke sounds great", she answered. "Ok, then. I'll go order the sodas and I'll be right back.. Oh, wait! Is there anything else you wanted while I'm up?", he asked. "No thanks. Just a coke is fine", she answered. "Cool".
He went to the snack bar to get the sodas as Melanie and Missy approached her.
"Hey, Pat. Are you and Frank getting along ok?", Melissa asked. "Yeah we are. Your brother's a nice guy", Pat answered, trying to hide her crush on him. "Great!" Melanie laughed excitedly. "Isn't Frank older than you, Melissa?", Pat asked. "Yeah," Missy answered, "I'm only fifteen, but everybody thinks I'm older", she laughed. I thought they were twins when I first met them, Pat", Melanie laughed. "Yeah, so did I", Pat agreed.
"Ok, enough with the small talk. What have you and Frank been alking about all this time?", MIssy asked curiously. "yeah, tell us all about it", Melanie piped in, anxiously.
"You know, I should've known this would happen!", Frank began from behind. "I leave Pat alone for five minutes and you two come along and hound her with questions!"
"Ok, ok. We get the point!", Melanie responded. "Yeah, we're leaving now!", Missy smirked. "Thank you", Frank teased.
"Here's your coke, Pat." "Thanks." "So," Frank began, "You're going to Riverdale. What classes are you taking?" "Well, mainly just the basic stuff that you have to take as a junior. You know, like history, chemistry, trigonometry.. the only really interesting classes I'm taking are choir and third year spanish."
"Choir, huh? I think you have to audition for that or something," Frank said. "Well, I already did. The choir teacher let me come in yesterday morning to audition and I got in!"
"Really? I never knew Mrs. Brewster got up early on Saturdays!", Frank laughed. "I guess she decided to make an exception", Pat responded. "Well, she doesn't make exceptions for 'just anybody'. Is your uncle the President or something?", Frank smirked. "Not quite", Pat laughed. "You see, I basically learned how to sing before I could walk. With dad being gone all the time for business, I passed the time watching Disney movies and learning all the songs. I could sing every song from every Disney movie ever made!", she laughed.
"I don't doubt that for a minute", Frank replied. "But, what's that got to do with Mrs. Brewster making her 'special exception'?"
"Well you see, no matter where we went, it was always important to my mom that I atted church and somehow, I always managed to end up on stage singing 'Amazing Grace' or 'The Old Rugged Cross'. Then, mom talked to Mrs. Brewster Friday afternoon after I recieved my schedule and told her how I was always singing in chuches wherever we went. Brewster was interested, so here I am!"
"You must be really good," Frank said. "Well, I do try", Pat responded sarcastically.
"So, where'd you meet my sister anyway?", Frank asked. "At the park," Pat answered. "Yesterday?"< he asked. "Yeah, how'd you know?" "How couldn't I know?! That's all she could talk about yesterday was going to the park. Apparently, some guy she really liked was going to be there playing basketball with his friends." "Ricky?", Pat asked. "Yeah, thats the one!", Frank laughed.
"Yeah.. well anyway, I went there yesterday afternoon after I got back from my audition and I saw her there. You see, my mom let me borrow the car and I took my little brother there to play." "How old's your brother?", he asked. "Well, the one I took to the park is four and a half, but I have another brother and three sisters", she said. "Whoa! Big family!", Frank responded.
"Not really. My older brother is nineteen and in the military. Two of my three sisters are married and have kids of their own and myother sister is fourteen, so she can basically take care of herself, for the most part anyway. I don't know, sometimes I think she just likes to pretend that she's helpless to get people's attention!!", she laughed.
"Well, that must make it easier on your parents." "Yeah, it does", Pat agreed. "But, enough about me. I hardly know anything about you, Frank", Pat said, her nervousness slowly disappearing as she reached for her soda across the table and took a sip.
"Not much to tell, really", he said. "You know, somehow I doubt that! Melissa sure had alot of things to say about you yesterday!"
"She was talking about me? I should've known! She shares my personal life with everybody she comes across! So, what'd she say?" "Nothing, really", Pat responded, feeling bad about mentioning it in the first place.
"I thought you said she was talking about me?", he asked. "Oh, she was! But it wasn't anything bad." "You're kidding!", Frank said in disbelief. "No, I'm not. She said alot of nice things about you, otherwise I wouldn't be sitting here talking to you and I certainly wouldn't have asked her to introduce me to you.", Pat responded.
As soon as the words came out of her mouth, she realized what she had said. She cold feel her face turning red as Frank just sat there, obviously quite pleased with himself.
"You really wanted to meet me?", Frank asked. "Why?", he asked curiously. "Well, your sister said a mouthful of nice things about you and I just wanted to meet the 'guy behind the SOLID reputation.", she exclaimed.
"That's cool. Most girls only want to go out with me because I'm the quarterback on the Football team or because of my 'good looks' which personally, I don't think are all that fabulous!"
"Really? I think you look great, but that's not why I wanted to meet you. I didn't find out that you were quarterback until just now when you told me,"Pat replied. "I'm surprised. That's usually the first thing Missy tells people. I think SHE thinks it gives HER bragging rights but it's not a big deal to me."
"Well, this time, it wasn't the first thing she told someone.", Pat said, takin another sip of ehr soda. "You know, it's funny, Pat. This is the first time in my entire life that Melissa has introduced me to someone that I really like."
