Conner

Frantically, he pulled his clothes back on. "Get in the closet," he hissed at Lainee. "Now."

"No!" she said stubbornly, staring at him incredulously. "Don't open the door, you cunt!"

He strode across the room and opened the door a crack, sliding out. "Hey, Lish," he said, trying to smile.

"Hi." She was smiling, but he could see the suspicion shining through the forced brightness. "So, what are you doing here?"

"I was supposed to meet Nad." He watched her carefully. She was still faking that overly bright smile.

She raised her eyebrows. "Oh, really?"

He nodded. "And her boyfriend."

"Oh." She glanced behind him at the door. He knew she was still suspicious. "Let's talk in there," she suggested, and he could read the motives behind her words.

He stiffened. "Let's go someplace else."

"No, I want to talk in this one," she said firmly, pushing past him and opening the door. He closed his eyes in horror as the door swung open...and Lainee lay naked on the bed, twirling his belt in her hands.

Lish

She stared at the girl on the bed and struggled not to cry.

"Who are you?" she asked, trying to keep her voice from shaking, but it still trembled slightly.

"I'm Lainee," the girl said coolly. "You must be Conner's ex-girlfriend."

"Yes," she said. "I am." She avoided Conner's eyes as he stared at her, tears welling.

Lainee smiled. "He's so good in bed, isn't he?"

"I wouldn't know," Lish said stiffly. "I think there are a lot of things about Conner that I don't know."

"Lish--" Conner began, but she held up a hand.

"I can see that I'm in the way," she said softly. "I'll just go, okay? And you two can get back to whatever you were doing."

She pushed past Conner out the door, not attempting to hide her tears now. How could he do this to her? She'd thought he loved her. She'd thought they would last forever...

"Lish!"

She didn't turn around. She recognized that voice, and she didn't want to see its owner.

"Lish, please wait!"

She could hear his footsteps pounding behind her, but she broke into a run, praying that she could reach her car before he caught up with her. But no such luck--he reached out and grabbed her arm just as she was sliding into her car.

"Let go of me," she spat, but his grip was too strong.

"I'm not letting go," he panted, "until you listen to me."

"You're hurting me!" she cried, and when he loosened his grasp, she yanked away and slid into her car, slamming her foot onto the gas and driving away. She watched in her mirror as he grew further and further into the distance, staring after her with a lost look on his face.

Tears streamed down her face as she drove recklessly, anywhere, everywhere. She stared down at the speedometer as the arrow swiveled higher and higher, higher and higher...

And she stared to the right as a light grew closer and closer.

That was the last thing she remembered before the glass shattered into her and everything went black.
