She stormed out of Tobin's house, fuming. How dare he do this to her? All she was trying to do was have a little fun.

She wasn't sure if she was really going to turn him in. She wasn't sure whether her threats were empty or not; what could they do to him? And besides, she had a doctor's appointment in...she glanced at her watch...five minutes.

Sliding into her car, she could feel herself shaking. He had accused her of rape. Was that really what it was? She hadn't thought anything of it, but what had she been doing to him? She knew that he loved Kris. She knew that he had never stopped and probably never would. Why was she so eager to get in the way of that?

Pulling up in front of the doctor's office, she straightened her dress and pulled the neckline a little lower. Trepidation rippled through her body. Each time she came, she became more and more frightened, because it meant she was growing closer and closer to the day when she would have her child.

She was starting to show; just barely, but still showing. She had gone shopping the previous week and bought her first wardrobe of maternity clothes. She hated them.

The secretary smiled at her as she passed her to go into the office. The doctor glanced up. "Hey, Beth. Come have a seat before we run some tests."

"Tests?"

"Just to make sure that the baby is doing all right," he told her. "I just have to finish filling out this paperwork and then we'll get started."

She stared at him, unable to believe her ears.

"What are you saying?" she whispered.

He wasn't looking at her. In fact, he was looking everywhere but at her. "I'm so sorry, Beth. But it appears that if your baby is born alive, it will have a mental illness."

"Are you saying that if my baby lives, it will be retarded?"

"Yes." He glanced away.

"How did this happen?" She could feel herself beginning to cry. No, stop. Don't cry now.

"Well, sometimes it can be caused by a jolt or a fall. Have you done anything that may have caused your baby to move around excessively recently?"

Oh, my God.

When Tobin shoved me off his lap.

Anger surged through her.

Tobin killed my baby.
