He waited.

It was the first time that he had been excited for Beth to come over.

Earlier, when she'd called, he'd hardly been able to contain his excitement. Here was his chance. He was going to end this, and he was going to end this now.

He could hear her feet echoing on the stairs.

He sucked in his breath. He could do this. He could.

The door slowly swung open, and he raised his eyes to look at her. She looked beautiful, but then she always did. She was dressed seductively in a revealing dress.

"Hey, Tobin," she said sweetly.

"Hey." He smiled at her. He felt much warmer towards her now that he knew he wouldn't ever have to see her again. "Come sit down." He patted his lap.

She smiled as she eased herself into his lap, loosely hooking her arms around his neck. "Today's going to be good," she whispered. "I can feel it."

"Oh, yeah," he agreed. "Today's going to be great."

She leaned in to kiss him, but he turned his face away. "I need you to shut up and listen to me," he said strongly.

She raised her eyebrows. "What are you doing, Tobin? This is suicide."

"I said shut up," he repeated. "I'm not going to do this anymore, Beth, do you hear me? I'm not going to be used by you anymore. I don't care for you at all; I've told you that. I know you don't care for me either. And I won't stand by and let you use me again."

Her eyes were blazing; she gripped his wrist tightly. "You know what you're doing. You're ensuring that you'll go to jail."

"I won't go to jail," he said easily, brushing this aside. "There'll be a court case. And I have a case."

"No, you don't. I haven't done anything to you."

He shoved her off his lap. She screamed in rage and leaped up, staring at him with fire in her eyes. His voice was low and full of loathing. "You blackmailed me. That is illegal. You raped me. That is illegal. You--"

"I didn't rape you," she said scornfully.

"Shut up," he said forcefully. "Get out of my house."

"I'm going straight to the police and turning you in--" Her hair was mussed, her normally perfect face distorted with anger.

"Go ahead," he told her calmly. "I'll be sitting right here, waiting for the case to begin."

Kris

"Stop saying that," Nick told her angrily. "I know that you love me!"

"I don't!" she cried, tears streaming down her face. "Get away from me!"

He shook his head wildly, staring at her. "I won't leave. I can't leave. I need you, Kris. If you push me away again, I'll keep following you. I can't stop myself. I have to be wherever you are."

"I'll turn you in," she whispered.

"They won't find me," he told her. "I'm good at hiding."

"They'll find you," she assured him with a confidence that she did not feel. "They'll find you and they'll lock you up."

"I haven't done anything wrong."

"You've been stalking me, for God's sake," she spat at him.

"Because I love you," he told her gently, moving closer and running his finger down her cheek. She shivered.

"Stop saying that," she whispered.

"I can't." He was gazing at her, a pleading, almost crazed expression in his eyes. "I can't leave you, Kris. And I can't deny that I love you. I've loved you all along."

"Then why did you fucking have sex with Beth?" she screamed at him. "You were the one that ruined it, Nick! I was so in love with you! I thought we would last forever! I thought..I thought.." She trailed off, weeping, then quietly finished, "I thought that you loved me."

"I did--I do!" He gripped her hand. "Listen to me, Kristine. Listen." He turned her head so that she had to look him in the eye. "I never meant to hurt you."

"That," she whispered, "doesn't change the fact that you did."
