"It was you," she whispered.

He stared at her, confused. "What was me?"

"The call," she said, her voice raising hysterically. "It was you!"

He began to back away from her, recognition dawning on his face. "How did you know?" he asked quietly.

"You screwed up," she answered, her voice still too loud. "You...you said things that you said then."

He stopped walking, and just stood there, watching her. "I didn't think you would have noticed."

"I'm smarter than you think," she said, staring at him. "Why did you do it, Nick? What do you want from me?"

His lips curved slowly into a smile. "I want you back, Kristine. That's all I want. Tobin doesn't deserve you."

"I told you, I'm not with Tobin anymore." Instantly she regretted this. He began to move closer.

"Then what's stopping you from being with me?" he asked, his voice low. "Tell me that, Kristine. Why shouldn't we be together? We love each other."

"No," she whispered. "I don't love you."

"Yes, you do," he said strongly. "You've loved me all along. I know this. I've been watching you, you know. With every word you said, ever kiss you shared. You were never truly content." He was examining her closely. "Because you were always thinking of me. Of the way things used to be."

"No," she whispered.

"It's true," he told her harshly. "I know it's true. You never saw me, but I was always there. And I missed you too. I felt the same way, you know, with Beth. She was just something I used to help myself not think about you so much, but it only made me think about you more. I know you felt like that too, Kris. We're meant for each other."

She wanted to yell at him, to tell him he was wrong, to call the police and demand that they remove him from her sight. But all she could manage was, "No."

Tobin

He didn't owe her anything.

He hadn't done anything to her! For God's sake, all he'd done was hit her once. Could he really go to jail for that?

He couldn't take a chance.

He hated himself. He hated his life. He hated Beth.

He couldn't keep going like this.

He would not spend the rest of his life bowing down to Beth's every need, her every sexual desire. He wouldn't. He despised her so much; she repulsed him. He was afraid that if she tried to make him do it again, he might not be able to.

And what would she do then?

If he failed to meet her needs, would she just give up on him? Or would she decide that he needed to be punished?

He had to do something about this.

He just didn't know what he could do.
