Lish

As she followed him, she kept his eyes on her face.

She wasn't sure why she was doing this. He had slapped her. Her face was still tingling with pain. And yet she couldn't take his eyes off of him, this replica of Jack. Slowly he turned back to stare at her.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" he asked softly, smiling at her.

"You hit me," she whispered. "Why did you hit me?"

He reached out a hand, smoothing his thumb over her swollen cheek. She winced. "I'm sorry, Lisha. I won't do it again. I've...I haven't been in a very good place. I guess I picked up some bad habits."  He leaned in to kiss her gently. "But you know that I love you, and I will never intentionally hurt you again."

She stared at him uncertainly, at the smoothness of his beautiful features, and involuntarily, Conner's face came to mind. She pushed it away. She couldn't think of him right now. "Jack" opened the passenger door for her and she slid in, still not taking his eyes off of him as he moved around the front of the car and into the driver's seat. He reached out a hand and spread his fingers over her knee as he drove.

"Where are we going?" she asked hesitantly.

"Somewhere special," he answered, smiling at her. "You'll love it, Lisha, trust me." He squeezed her leg, and she felt cold shivers run down her spine. Who was he?

"Please tell me something," she said quietly. "Please tell me what happened to you."

He looked away from her suddenly, concentrating on the road ahead. His eyes had narrowed. She flinched, afraid that he might hit her again, but instead he took a deep breath and began to talk.

"I was mugged, Lisha. Some black boys decided they didn't like me because I was white, and they mugged me. They knew I got away, but they didn't want anyone to know that they had hurt me, so they made a wax body and brought it to my parents, saying they found me on the road and I'd been in a car accident." He took a deep breath. "I...I wanted to find you immediately, Lisha. I wanted to tell you that I survived. But I couldn't. So I went to my brother, Jameson. He let me live with him for awhile, but it wasn't a good place. He beats his wife, see. And I..." His breathing became rugged and shaky. "I'm so sorry that I hurt you, Lisha, but I..." And he broke down into wild tears.

Standing up frantically, he glanced around once more, this time frenzied. What if Lish was hurt? What if this "Jack" poser had hurt her?!

And he had no way of finding her.

He jumped into his car and began to speed around, looking for any sign of her. But he saw none. Finally he pulled the car over and rested his head against the steering wheel.

What was he going to do?

Finally he sat up. There was nothing he could do, except go home and wait.

He hated that he couldn't find her.

He hated that he couldn't save her.

But he honestly saw no way of finding her in this huge town.

And that was when he looked up and saw her.

Sitting in a truck that was speeding past, next to someone who looked remarkably like Jack. Quickly he started his car and began to follow them.

The Jack look-a-like was talking, and looked to be crying. He examined Lish; she appeared to be crying too. They kept driving and driving; he wondered where they were going. They had left town now, and were heading towards a dark building.

The car stopped beside it and he watched as the guy got out and opened the door for Lish. Enraged, he sat in his car and stared as the guy took her hand and then slipped his arm around her waist. And Lish let him do it.

The guy led her up to the dark building; looking closer, he could see that it was huge. Through the windows, he could see sparkling water: a pool.

And then the guy was stripping down.

What are you doing?! he thought incredulously. Are they planning to go skinny-dipping?

And then, to his utter shock and disbelief, Lish began to strip down too.
