When she awoke, there was someone sitting beside her, holding her hand. She blinked, trying to clear her blurry vision. Who was that?

Finally she could see them clearly, and when she did, she nearly fainted again.

It was Nick.

"Nick?" she said incredulously, lifting her head groggily. "What are you doing here?"

"Your mom called me to come over," he said smoothly. "She was kind of scared because you weren't answering the phone."

"Oh." She rubbed her head. "What happened?"

"I don't know," he said, looking concerned. "When I came, you were unconscious and almost breaking your phone from squeezing it so hard. I put it on your coffee table." He held it up so she could see.

And everything suddenly came flooding back.

Don't look so scared...

I can still see you...

"Somebody called me," she said suddenly, staring at Nick. "Somebody could see me."

She was aware that she was making no sense, but it was still reassuring to see the worry on Nick's face. "What do you mean, Kris? What did they say?"

"They said I was beautiful." That was all she could get out, but it was enough to make Nick's anxious expression go from bad to worse.  And then something clicked inside her head; why the hell was Nick here?

"Why did Mom call you?" she said skeptically. "She knows that we're over."

"Maybe because she didn't have this Tobin guy's number." She caught a hint of jealousy in his voice.

"Tobin and I aren't together anymore," she said shortly, trying to make her voice as dismissive as possible, but Nick wasn't one of the types to let it go just like that.

"Why not?"

"Because he decided to follow your lead," she snapped.

Recognition dawned on Nick's face. "Him and Beth?"

"You think?" Sighing, she turned her face away. "I really don't feel very good."

"Remember how Tobin called me that one time?"

His voice was thoughtful, and she turned back to look at him. "Yes...?"

"What if I call him and give him the same lecture?"

"No, I don't think so," she said instantly. "I don't think that's a good idea."

"Why not?"

"I just don't."

"If you can't give me a better reason than that, I'm going to do it."

She sighed. "It's just that Tobin hates you, Nick, okay?"

He looked at her carefully. "Why does he hate me, Kristine?"

She recognized that.

Kristine. The way he said it.

It sounded so familiar.

Brushing this aside, she said, "Because of what you did."

"That doesn't matter."

That doesn't matter.

Oh, my God.

It was him.

Tobin

He picked up the phone, his hands shaking as he dialed Beth's number.

God, he was pissed. Did she get herself pregnant on purpose? Why the hell would she do that? To mark her territory? To ensure that Kris would cut off their relationship forever?

What a fucking bitch.

"Hello?"

He hated every aspect of that voice. He hated the person using that voice. He hated it.

"Beth?" His voice shook.

"Tobin! Hey. What do you need?"

"I need you to tell me something," he said, his voice dangerously soft. He almost couldn't say it. He almost wanted to hang up on her, shove him out of her life forever. But he had to know.

"What is it?"

"When we were...well...you know..."

"We were having sex, Tobin. Don't be a child. Just say it."

"Okay." He took a deep breath. He hated thinking about having sex with her. "When we were having sex, you brushed your thumb against me right before I went inside you."

He could practically hear her stiffen. "Yes."

"And after that, I noticed something."

"What was that?"

"The condom was gone." He remembered now, clearly. He had looked down and thought for a moment that it was gone, but brushed it aside as him seeing things. But now...

"If you're trying to suggest," she said icily, "that I removed the condom, all I have to say is that you are a stupid fucking idiot. Why would I want to get pregnant, Tobin? Tell me that?"

"Because you're a bitch."

"And you're a cunt. But what does that change? Nothing. Look, Tobin, this is harder for me than it is for you. My parents don't know yet. Can you imagine what they'll do to me when they find out?"

"I don't care what they do to you. You mean nothing to me, Beth."

"We're not through yet, you know." She was whispering now. "You still owe me something. I would watch your mouth if you don't want to go to jail."

And then she hung up.

He threw the phone against the wall, agitated and frustrated. He hated her. God, he hated her so much.
