Mary Buth Farm
It was a cheerful December thirty-first. Though the owner of the Buth Farm didn’t find it so cheerful. Some of the events that took place were at first put off as minor glitches, although there was a feeling of evil in the house. The house got cold, and candles burned very fast. Then an old woman in a black dress looked in the window and disappeared scaring everyone in the room. The owner decided to look into the history of the farm to solve the mystery of his scary visitor.
The farm was built in 1838 as one of Wisconsin’s early homesteads. John and Mary raised three children; Herman, Carl, and Mary. None of the children ever married and they lived on the farm until they died in their seventies and were buried in the small cemetery on the land.
A section of the original homestead house became part of the present two-story house. It is said that the younger Mary, the daughter haunts the land, searching for a lost lover. Mary, the mother, is said to haunt the house. But Mary has not been the only spirit residing in the house. One day, one person who had lived in the house was home alone, all the radios were off, and he heard violin music. Herman Buth had played violin.
The owners of the house still can’t explain the happenings of December 31, 1965.
