I was 8 years old and my sister was 13. My mom and dad had been fighting earlier in the day, so me and my sister knew that when my dad got home we had better hide.

My sister and I were on the back porch playing with our dog. Everything was going fine when suddenly we heard the garage door opening. We ran into the house and hid in her room. After about 5 minutes had past the fighting started. I heard my mom screaming at the top of her lungs, but as an 8 year old, I continued to hide.

My older sister was all I had at the time. My mom and dad were either working or fighting and my 16 year old brother was never home.

After a few more minutes, my dad came into the bedroom and started screaming at us to come out. We were hiding under the bed. We finally came out, scared that he would hurt us if we didnt. When we sat up on the bed, he started yelling at us about cleaning the house and helping our mom around the house. It was apparent that he had been drinking, I could smell the alcohol on his breath. My mom walked into the room, standing behind him she signed for us to come with her. I got up and walked past my dad as he was screaming "Your not going anywhere, Your not leaving." I ignored his fearful tone of voice. My sister stayed in the room, shaking to the sound of my dad.

I went to the closet to get my shoes. My mom told me to go get my sister, she would be in the car. I got my shoes on and went to get my sister. We went out to the car to find that my dad was shoking my mom. Her face was so red that it appeared she already dead. I didn't know what to do. My sister automatically ran over to him and started hitting him, smacking him in his head. I was so histerical, from what I remember, it appeared that I was running in circles. My sister was screaming for me to go call someone. I ran into the house and called my grandma... I dont think she understood what I was saying but she knew that something was wrong. Somehow, my mom managed to back out of the driveway. I thought they were leaving me, but I ran as fast as I could to the car and they finally let me in. I would have done anything to not have to stay with my father.

We drove to my grandmas house where we had to fill out, what seemed to be, endless police reports. My mom told me that we were going to make it, we were strong, we could make it without my dad.

She was right, almost 10 years later, still no sign of a father figure. But we are fine. My sister is a very successful nurse at the Cleveland Clinic and I am a junior in high school.

Lesson:  No matter what may ever happen, stick close to those who are closest to you and you can accomplish anything.
