- Chapter One: "Memories"
The snow was falling in heaps outside. Glistening like glitter on a white blanket. She looked out upon it. Watching it swirl and drift into mounds, as far as the eye could see. She shivered. A fire was crackling in the hearth. Embers and smoke floating up the chimney to be carried of in the wind.
Her heart ached; remembering another snowy night years ago.......
" Billy, It's time!" She said.
"Time?" Asked Billy.
"Time." she said, again with a note of anxiety in her voice.
"Don't panic," he said, we're ready!" He ran upstairs and grabbed a bag.
She was trying to stay calm but the pain was getting worse.
They headed for the car slipping on the snowy ground. He put his arm around her. Helping her into the car.
"Do you think we'll make it ?" She asked. Billy replied quickly, in the best mock calm voice he could muster. "I am sure we will. The hospital is only 16 miles away. Didn't the Doctor say first labors can take days?"
He took her hand she was shaking with emotion. He felt a deep rush of love and respect. Of wanting and apprehension.
"I can't believe it's time!" He said. She smiled at him and squeezed his hand back.
She turned to look out the window. She thought about how soft and comforting his touch was. All her anxiety seemed to be melting away.
"We're nearly there now." Billy said. She looked over at him. In awe about how comforting and calming his presence was. Then she saw light coming towards them through the drivers window. She did not realize what it was at first. As she stared at the light coming closer she could see they were headlights on a huge truck
"BILLY!" She screamed! She grabbed her belly just before the collision. It seemed to take so long for the truck to hit. Everything seemed to have almost stopped. Seconds felt like minutes. She could hear breaks and a crash. Then there was nothingness; Cold black nothingness.
When she awoke she could hear a small beeping noise. She was scared to open her eyes. She wasn't sure where she was or where Billy was. She felt her stomach. It was soft, soft and empty. She felt like someone was strangling her; she could not breath or think.
The Baby, She couldn't feel the baby. she opened her eyes Slowly hoping to see a bassinet next to her. She looked around. There was no sign of a baby anywhere. She was in a hospital. It was all so confusing she needed to find the baby and Billy. A nurse came in.
"Mam Please do not move around too much You have an IV in your arm."
"Where's the Baby? Where's my husband?" She asked, with panic creeping up in her mind Like a blinding darkness.
"Just wait Mam; the doctor is on his way."
She turned towards the door just as the doctor entered.
"Where is the baby?" She asked again, "Where is my husband?"
The doctor sat down on a stool next to the bed. Her panic grew stronger.
"Doctor, Please tell me where they are!
"I need to see if they're Alright."
"Mrs. Harper, you were in an accident do you remember?"
She tried to remember but all she could see was Billy.
"We were going to the hospital. It was snowing, Snowing really hard. My labor had just started. I don't understand Doctor, did I have the baby?"
She closed her eyes to clear her head when she saw light, Lights coming towards her she could hear the brakes... She began to cry. The doctor took her hand. She remembered it all in a flash. She pulled away and buried her face in the pillow.
"Amber." The doctor said in a somber voice "Your husband died on impact. Your car was hit by a truck. We believe it was hours before you were found. It was well below freezing you are lucky to have made it.
I am sorry; we could not save the baby."
The whole world seemed to turn upside down. With those few words.
Her baby, the baby she had been waiting for so many months. The baby she dreamed about. The baby who was going to sleep in the nursery, The nursery that Billy painted and she decorated. She felt like she was dead. And wished she was.
Her family had been taken from her before it even started. No baby, No husband. Everything was gone.
"Doctor?" she asked. "Was it, was it a boy or a girl?
He gave her a small smile. "You had a beautiful little boy."
She opened her eyes, wet with tears from the memory of that moment.
The moment that changed her whole life.
