“Who is this?”
“I think you know. I think you’ve always known.” The room started spinning again and this time when it quit Adi wasn’t at school anymore. She became aware of sweat dripping down her forehead, and the quick deep breaths she was taking. Vaguely, she wondered where she was. Looking around, she saw rocky walls and a jagged ceiling. The ground was wet. She turned around, and then it hit her. She saw herself, staring, amazed, at herself. But the Adi that Adi saw now was at school, where Adi was – how long ago? Adi took a step back and realized she was looking at a mirror. Why was this mirror showing her at school? None of it made sense. Then Adi realized there were other mirrors, all around. The rocky walls were actually made out of mirrors. But something was incredibly wrong. Gazing at one of the mirrors Adi didn’t see her reflection. It was completely blank. She decided to move on.
The next mirror she saw showed reflections of her and the surrounding mirrors, creating the infinity effect, but it was also like looking through a window. Adi could see reflections, but also through the mirror to see what was inside. Without thinking, she slowly reached out to touch it. Her fingers almost reached the smooth, icy cold surface when she felt air rush by her and heard a voice say into her ear, “I dare you.”
Adi jumped back. That voice again. Now she remembered it vividly. Adam…
She stared at his face, taking in every single familiar feature, remembering everything that happened before that horrible event…she saw it: that hideous scar above his amazingly bright blue eyes. She heard the gun shots again, remembered the terrible screams, heard people running away. Then she remembered seeing Adam on the ground, and she felt the revolting pain of losing him again. She remembered hearing gun shots again, and foot steps rushing toward her. She had to leave or she would end up like Adam. She had run away like a coward and regretted it every day. The police never found out who committed that horrific crime, and they never found Adam’s body again. Their mother had spent countless nights sobbing in her room, soon losing her mind and having to be sent away, leaving their father to take care of a teenage daughter alone. But here was Adam, alive! Adi felt tears come into her eyes.
“It’s been a while, Adi.” Adi had no idea what to say. She stepped forward, unbelieving, and reached out for him. What would her father say when Adi brought Adam back home? How would Adam ever get to tell them how he had lived all this time? Where had he been? There were so many questions rising up inside Adi and she just wanted to cry and laugh and dance and cry some more all at once. Her fingers had meant to stroke Adam’s copper red hair but ended up trying to trace the pale scar on his head. She couldn’t do it.
Instead she just sobbed, “I’m sorry,” over and over again. Adi didn’t care about anything else, she just wanted Adam to come home, and everything would be better, she was sure.
“That doesn’t matter,” Adam said. He reached out and tried to grab her hand, but his passed directly though hers. “I’m not here.” Adi didn’t understand. She thought she had finally gotten her brother back, and here he was saying he wasn’t here? Then, she watched, horrified, as Adam began to step away from her.
“I don’t want to lose you again!” she shouted. Adam just shook his head. He began to fade away right in front of Adi, melting into an icy mirror behind him.
“Find me, Adi.” Adi froze hearing those words. She went after him, trying desperately to pull him back, crying harder every time he only sank further away.
“Why? Why do you have to go?” Adam looked sad.
“I was never here. You have to find me, Adi.”
“How can I? Adam, please!” But he was already gone. The mirror showed an attic full of boxes and old papers.Comments
