The Forest
|
A gentle breeze, the peaceful trees dance back and forth as birds chirp and twitter away their tops. Slumber seized me down in depths of dreams. I flow among the water, back and forth with the gentle current, as the sun let slide its veil. The stream welcomes all as it shimmers from the warm sunbeams. The wind did whisper my name and I did not move. The calm waters flow faster and the wind whispers again. Clouds of dirt and leaves dance and gather around me. Still, I did not move.
The stream babbled and giggled. No go. Will not wake up.
Important news! Wake up, NOW! The wind cast a tree branch into the flow of the stream. I leap from the waters. My spirit took form, a wolf. Water sprinkled the shores or dived back into the stream as I shook every drip off my coat. Dare disturb me as I sleep? You better have important news. I growled.
The wind blew strong. A creature is coming here.
Oh? And what kind of creature might I ask? For not long ago you informed me of a deadly creature in my forest, and it was nothing but a lost moose. I barked, my sharp canines glistened with saliva.
That’s right. Nothing but a harmless moose. It left soon enough. The trees sway with laughter.
Quiet. Let us hear what the wind has to say. I jumped to the trees my form ever changing: a robin, a squirrel, a raccoon. I lounge on a low branch to await the answer.
The wind fell silent, the leaves ceased to dance; the birds hushed their young. The trees froze their sway. This was the forest, still with anticipation.
Finally the wind whispered, little more to turn a leaf. A human is on her way. I’ve felt her, right outside the border! An eruption of gasps exploded.
A child, among us? STOP HER! She will chop us down and burn us!I’m barely a sapling!Shuddered nearby trees. They threw loose branches to the ground as leaves freed themselves and followed in the long drop to the forest floor.
She’ll eat my young! She’ll shoot us down!
Birds flight away from their homes. The flowers at the forest floor closed their petals.
Calm down my brothers and sisters. This human will not harm you. I jump to the air free of form, and grab the wind by its neck. Take me to the child. The wind howled.
Dressed in green, the girl blended with the forest. Her eyes, wide with innocence, on a search. With a steady pace, branches and leaves crunch beneath her feet.
But what is she after? Will she chop us down? More trees shook as I approached the girl. She’ll pluck us up!She’ll take me away! The flowers shriek and close their petals.
Quiet my kin, she will not harm you.The girl continued with her quest, oblivious to the life around her. But what is she after if not the timber or the flora? I start to follow her. The trees moved in closer as she ran. The light grew dim among the floor. The wind tickles the girl with its cold breath. She shivers but presses on. As a sparrow, I hurry after her. Do not scare the child. We must know her quest. I sing out to the wind.
Deeper and deeper into the unknown, the girl runs, until she finds herself in the heart of the forest. No birds dare to sing here. The flowers do not bloom. The trees are older then the forest itself. They tower over the girl, with long, leafy branches to seize all sunlight.
Who dare disturb us?We do not give kindly to creatures among us.Be gone!No need to fret my brothers. I am here. I land on a low branch. My form fades.
Why would you bring her here?Have you betrayed us my lord? The trees plea. I ignore them.
The girl kneels to the ground, then stands up with raised hands to the heavens. A force grabbed me from all around. What is this! What is happening to me! My body contorted into a face of leaves. My eyes open and I blink up at the girl. “What kind of sorcery is this?” I spat out.
“I have summoned you here. I want to know who you are. Where did you come from?” The girl smiles at my prison.
I looked around. The wind was not with me, the trees still, leaves no longer at dance. I listen to my forest. Silence. I must battle this girl alone. “Dear child, my origins are far too great to explain to a mere human.”
The girl leans in. “If you won’t tell me, then you will be trapped in that body for all of eternity.” She smiles wickedly.
I shutter at the thought. Bits of my face come loose and the wind grabs them. We are here. We await your orders. My friend, we shall have fun with this child. The girl sat down, unaware of my plans. “Well, get on with your story.”
“I was born in the form of the wind and can be seen dancing in the trees. I have no real shape for I am not solid. I exist because nature exists. The trees are my brothers, flowers my sisters, and the wind is my companion.” I close my eyes.
Why is she here? Fun we shall have!Shall we have fun now?No my kin, let us wait. Wait for my whistle!“The forest does not want you here.” I opened my eyes and stare at the girl.
She fiddles with a fallen twig. “I don’t care what these plants say. They can’t harm me, they’re just shrubbery. Besides, I want answers. When did you appear in this forest?”
“Time is no use to me. I do not need it therefore it does not hold me to its rules. I do not age, because I have no body for time to age. Past, present, future…it is all a blur of death and rebirth.”
“Then what is your name? You must have a name!”
“If you would like to know my name, it is whispered through the wind and talked of in the waters. The trees all know my name. If you can talk to any of them, then you shall learn my name. Now, enough questions, I have grown tired.”
The girl stands up. “You haven’t answered any of my questions! You haven’t said anything important to me! I have power over you!” She points the twig at me. “TELL ME WHAT I WANT TO KNOW!”
“My dear child, do you really think you can hold such a powerful being in this wretched form?” I whistle to the trees. They sway back and forth in response.
Finally! We shall have fun!
The wind swirls and blows, lifting the face of leaves into the air. The face smiles before dancing away. The enchantment is broken and I am free!
The girl is swept away by the tree branches. They carry her high into the air. The leafy branches pass her from tree to tree. She dips and dives, only to be pushed back up higher and higher.
The girl lands at the edge of the woods with a slight thump. She got up and dusted her clothes off in defeat. I hurry to the border of the woods. A new leafy face takes shape among the trees.
“You are not welcome here. Leave my forest child.”
Without another glance, the girl rushes away from the deep forest.
