1: New Born
“….and we can be fairly certain there’s nothing to worry about at this moment in time. Julie Kipling, BBC News, Penzance.”
“And for those of you who would like to find out more, visit our website at www.bbc.co.uk/news/climate...There was controversy in parliament today as Sir David Frank revealed more about his ‘World Unity Plan’ involving the United States President. There were strong arguments on both sides of the house which inevitably led to a stalemate on the decision. Supporters of the plan claim that it will create a state of unity with all countries and significantly reduce conflict in lower economically developed areas of the world. The supporters also state that poverty and homelessness will be tackled in a much more efficient way, thus reducing the suffering experienced by these people. Opposers say these claims are false and the United States government are deliberately using this pseudo to front their plans for land and economic growth. Prime Minister Glen Bailey was undecided on the m……”
‘To be honest, who cares?’ Thought Dan, finishing his pasta bake ready meal and dropping the cutlery into the bowl. ‘Its all balls, they’ll never go through with it. It won’t work. Period.’ He wiped his mouth using his sleeve and stared at the television. Staring, however, is not watching. Daniel was thinking. ‘What am I doing here? I’m sure I should be doing something constructive. Here I am. Wasting my night away. TV, crap food.’ His unblinking eyes were cemented to the screen and his hands rested on the table in front of him, slightly clenched. ‘Hehe, never mind” He sat there breathing slowly, permanent in his spaced out expression. His parents were out, he couldn’t remember where they went but he wasn’t allowed to come. Not that he remotely cared, this was after a fierce argument about something which seemed important at the time. Thinking about this made him feel even more awkward so he tried not to. He forced his mind towards something mellower. ‘Maybe I can listen to music’. Almost getting excited by this idea, he smiled. However, he remembered that he had left his mp3 player at Jason’s house. Disappointment sank below what he felt beforehand.
“Balls”
10:13 pm. Yes, he figured as much. He stood up and took the bowl to the sink. He stopped and leant with his hands on the edge of the basin, gazing out into the yellowy black night. In his half-asleep state he saw street lamps go out and back on again. He heard a high pitched whistling noise which swooped across the estate and out into the countryside. This sent a trickle down his spine. He closed the window off the snip, unable to let the wind bother his meditation. The house seemed to go silent, all that mattered was his mind. A number of things entered and left it in those moments. He pondered about his friends, college and his parents. Once he had finished, all that was left was paradise. Dan let all of his muscles relax. His body had gone numb, he was floating above the kitchen floor, completely in his own world without a care for anything. Nothing was more important than this instant and nothing was going to ruin it.
Perhaps something clicked in his mind, or he was very drained, but something had changed about the atmosphere when Dan came out of his trance. He suddenly felt completely alone and vulnerable. His parents had been gone for hours but for the first tine tonight he was hopelessly lonesome. There was a wave of cold which seared through the room. Dan breathed heavier, shivering and wide-eyed. He also realised the TV had no noise coming from it. It seemed to have turned off by itself. There was another whistle from outside but it was stronger and shriller. Fear had begun to creep into him. Clearly panting for breath, he made his way out of the kitchen, across the hall and into the toilet. He felt his legs get weaker as he walked and was practically crawling when he got there. He flung himself over the pan and gagged. There was no vomit. But there was a mass of terror which surged into his heart. He fell to the floor, unable to stop himself grabbing and scratching at the carpet for some sort of defence. He curled up into a ball and forced his face into his knees. Tears could be felt running into his jeans but it was hopeless. Everything was going to die and there was nothing he could do about it. Panic gripped him; there was nothing to save him from certain oblivion.
Then the phone rang.
Like a mother’s loving hand, the ringing warmed him. The fear was gone. He opened his eyes and looked up.
“What the fuck was that?” he croaked.
He heaved himself up and shuffled to the phone in the hall. He watched the handset curiously for an instant. He wiped his burning eyes with his sleeve, sniffed and picked up the phone. As soon as the plastic hit his face, he felt different, stronger and his words came out in a wave of confidence and authority.
“Hello?” There was a pause
“Hi Dan. It’s me” there was a sight intake of breath “James”. The boys voice was one Dan knew, but his memory was not as nervous.
“Yeah ok, I can recognise your voice” Dan said.
“Er yeah…ok…good.” Dan wasn’t too troubled by James’ lack of usual cheer but was glad to here a familiar voice. James had saved him. Dan stood there waiting for the purpose of the call. “Yeah, um, don’t know whether you’re getting this but err I’ve got no hot water will you check yours for me?” Dan pondered about this but was too happy to ask why.
“Yeah, just a sec” He went into the bathroom he’d just been in. It was a lot lighter than before, more comfortable. Still puzzled by his terrifying experience he tested the water. It was indeed cold. “Yes, cold in here too.”
“Oh ok.” He immediately sounded more relaxed. “So what do you reckon’s wrong with it?”
“I’ve no idea. Why did you call my house phone?”
“I tried calling your mobile but I couldn’t get through and then mine went bust as well.”
“Right” Something crossed Dan’s mind which seemed a little odd “how did you know the water might not be working at my house too? I mean it just seems a bit strange…”
“Well I was speakin’ to Chelsea and she was complaining about her water being cold. I just though it was her boiler playing up but when I went to the loo mine was too.”
“Oh right. Where does Chelsea live?”
“Near the co-op somewhere”
“Obviously not just this area of town being cold then.”
“That’s what I thought”
“Ok. This still doesn’t really explain why you called me though” Dan found this quite amusing. “I’m sure it’s nothing to worry about James”. His smirk lessened as there was no answer. “James?”
“Look, er…please don’t tell anyone about this” James’ voice was hushed. “My parents aren’t back yet and err…I though I heard noises from the garden. Kind of shrieking noises. High pitched y’know.” Dan felt the hairs on his neck erect. “I just wanted to…”
“Hear a familiar voice”
“……..er…yeah”
“Ok” Dan’s eyes searched for thoughts as James patiently waited. An instinct, for a lack of a better word, had possessed him. He knew he had to help him.

lol, ok. I agree, people judge themselves more severely than others would, lol, well usually. (Some people go the other on that one. Either way, there's bias there.) So... I really love your writing style. I think you're descriptions are perfect, especially when you are describing his panic. I think describing emotion, for most people, is difficult, and you did a great job. The emotion comes across clearly. |

This is the best story I have read on this site. I could go on about that, but, from what I know about you, I'm sure you have your opinions about the stories posted. I have other things to say, but I'll comment the rest on your main page. |

I may not be continuing this on the site. But anything is possible! It all depends on feedback and what i can offer creatively. I think there is too much speech at the moment. What do you think? |
