All You Need Is Love
|
Yes, all you need is love to enjoy this heart-stopping tragic romance of two lovers who overcome all obstacles. The blue-eyed beauty, Nicole Kidman, plays Satine: the all-singing, all-dancing star of the Moulin Rouge. She spices things up at the popular French nightclub, where the rich and powerful come out to play with the beautiful creatures of the underworld. Ewan McGregor portrays Christian, an English writer with a huge talent, who traveled from London to immerse himself in the Bohemian Revolution. He comes to turn-of-the-century Paris to write about truth, beauty, freedom and that of which he believes in most...love. When the two star-crossed lovers meet, Christian falls in love at first sight; however the comical courtesan needs to redefine her meaning of true love.
The person responsible for this fabulous feast for your eyes is the one and only Baz Luhrmann. He has done it again with his brilliant movie-making techniques. His outrageous originality and innate imagination allow him to create an awe-inspiring feature film that leaves the audience with a penetrating deep impression. He sets out to accomplish new things that have not been tried before, and he reaches those goals; and not only does Luhrman fulfill his goal, he exceeds them.
You may remember one of Baz Luhrmann's previous films, William Shakespeare's Romeo + Juliet, which starred stunning actress Claire Danes and the handsome hunk Leonardo DiCaprio. In this film, Luhrmann took the story of the world's two most famous lovers and set them in a modern metropolis giving the infamous story a new, unique spin. The story is still spoken in early modern English in which Shakespeare had written it; however, the contemporary environment helps the viewers of today's societies to understand the story a little better. The new edge given to this story is a perfect example of how Luhrmann uses different techniques with his films. He has an extraordinary imagination and he keeps it at work.
The music in Moulin Rouge is not exactly original music for the movie, but that makes it all the more original to Luhrmann's style. Baz Luhrmann incorporated songs from artists like Nirvana, Elton John and Madonna to tell the story of our two lovers. The first big number performed by Ewan McGregor is "Your Song" from Elton John. This scene is absolutely a fantastic array of inspirational music, shimmering stars and even a singing moon. This scene explodes in radiance as the two lovers realize they were meant for each other. Ewan McGregor also sings David Bowie's "Heroes" in an attempt to convince Satine and the audience that love really can lift us up where we belong.
The choreography to this film is nothing short of action-packed and energetic. The Can-Can sequence demonstrates the wild and violent dance moved that were performed in France in that era. "El Tango de Roxanne" is a dance sequence that will literally pull you into the story and take over your emotions. This number is a powerful, energetic and compelling portrayal of all the emotional stress Christian endures when Satine has no other choice but to sleep with the Duke.
The costumes used in this movie are extremely impressive. The Can-Can girls' dresses are a splendid concoction of color and style that are a treat to the visual senses. Satine's wardrobe consists of garments that are quite elegant and sexy. Satine wears glittering outfits as she works her magic on the dance floor. In Satine's last number she is garnished with jewels in her hair and on her body.
Where else would you find a narcoleptic Argentinean and a Green Fairy all in one movie? Moulin Rouge is a must-see to experience film; so many techniques that have not been used before are used and they delight the senses. Only Baz Luhrmann, a highly-regarded movie director from Down Under, could use this awesome movie-making magic to create such a spectacular film. The music is very modern and lively, and it helps to immerse those who may not appreciate love stories. You will be astounded with the energy radiating from the screen from the outstanding dance numbers. Upon watching this film, you will realize just "how wonderful life is now that [this movie] is in the world." You may also learn something from this film, which is that "The greatest thing you'll ever learn is just to love and be loved in return."
