Part One:
Year Of 1560
Chapter 1
Jean Scott grew up in a poor family. She remembered them as they remembered her, as a young girl would always remember her parents. They lived in a broken down house, if you could even call it a house, but it was a home full of memories that died soon along with her parents. Years ago she decided that she would start living out her parents’ dreams as if they were still here. She worked in the palace dropped from the heavens on a mounted hill, and served the King of France. She wasn’t welcome there by some, just because they never treated maids the same as the royals, especially King James. The looks she would receive from him were unnecessary, and the tasks he would give her weren’t fair. It was like nothing was ever good enough for him. Jean was only 16, but a lot of the girls her age were married by now, and had started a family of their own. She had always wanted to marry, like any girl she had always dreamed about it being like a fairy tale. She believed that one day a munificent prince would come and sweep her off her feet, and right at that moment they would know that everything would be fine, and they would live happily ever after. Her mother always told her that they put the “happily ever after” at the end of every fairy tale because there was no other way to describe happiness. Princess Elizabeth Rose wasn’t as beautiful as she took credit for, but much more beautiful than Jean. Jean wasn’t ugly though, she was more fair and plain. She had brown hair that was almost always down on her shoulders, putting it up would make her look bare, with a wardrobe of a blue worn dress that fell to the floor with silver sleeves and silver slippers. She usually ignored the beautiful castle, with the outstanding artwork and the millions of colors that lie, she’s seen it all.
Chapter 2
Princess Elizabeth Rose was looking for what she knew as a prince, a prince with bleach blonde hair that would stand by her castle at night, singing and begging for her hand in marriage. Jean always thought that she would never be patient enough to receive the treasures of ever having a Prince for a husband. Many men strolled up and down the corridors that day, their slippers pattering faintly down the hallways and into the chamber where Princess Elizabeth Rose sat waiting for her knight in shinning armor. Jean scrubbed the floor after them, as the King had demanded, watching each man come and go, picturing herself with each of them. Jean's back ached from the position she had sat in all day, and soon her knees would hurt too much for standing on.
"Excuse me?" asked a strong, french accented voice. Jean slowly turned around, afraid to move. She slowly turned around, bucket of water and scrubbing brush in hand. She looked up, her brown hair draping over her face and as he looked at her he had a sudden thought that she might be the princess. The man standing over her was obviously here for Princess Elizabeth Rose and she got to her feet right away. The man standing in front of her was tall and slim, his handsome features rising to the surface of her mind. She noticed his eyes glittered a shade of green she had never seen before as the late afternoon sun shone down on him and her. He was dressed in silver and blue, and he wore slippers close to the ones on her feet. The outfit flattered his shape and she could almost see him without his shirt on. She blushed as if she had said this out loud, or as if he could read her mind. She would punish herself later for thinking such thoughts. He wore his sleeves pulled up on his strong arms and his muscles squeezed out of them, pouring over the side of the rolled up shirt. She then noticed she was staring and she turned an even deeper shade of red. "Yes, your majesty?" She asked, her accent almost as strong as his.
"Where shall I meet with Princess Elizabeth?" He asked politely.
"Third door on the left" She stood there for no longer then a second and then dropped back down to the floor and winced, ringing out her rag over the bucket of mucky and soapy water.
"Oh," He said before walking off "You missed a spot" She looked up at him and he winked. A light smile spread over her face as she looked back down at the floor. He turned and took a few steps more to the third door and then turned around again, trying to make up his mind.
"You know," He began, now kneeling down to her level. The door opened and King James stepped out into the spotless hallway.
"Hello?" He asked, looking down at the Prince and her.
"Your majesty" The Prince said quickly and stood up, bowing to him.
"I believe my daughter is down there," The King replied and pointed a long nailed finger to the third door on the left.
"Oh, yes, I just met your-"
"Disgrace?" The King chuckled. He snatched Jean's arm and wrenched her up off the floor, as she gasped in surprise.
"I told you not to talk to them!" He yelled, shaking her violently "Did you listen to me?" She could feel his anger through her arm in his hand. His long fingernails dug into her skin and she could feel the warmth of her own blood sucking on her dry skin, feasting on her fear.
"I’m-I’m sorry your majesty, it wont happen again" Jean said quickly.
"Good, ‘cause you know what will happen," The King said. He kicked her bucket over, water spreading over the hard marble floor and shoved her down in it. He bent down to her and grabbed a lock of her brown, wavy hair, jerking her head up to his level.
"Clean it up!" He snarled and pushed her hard back into the cold water. She shivered on the ground, and felt like she was naked in front of thousands of people. She wanted to look at the Prince, because he was getting ready to tell her something that she would never be able to know now.
"Follow me," The King said, smiling to the Prince. They both stepped over her lying in the puddle of mixed soap, water and mud, but the prince stopped and turned around before he reached the big fancy door attached to the painted wall. She got on her hands and knees, then noticed him. He turned around, and walked through the door, after the King. She wondered why he looked at her, when all it seemed like he was doing was memorizing her face.
