Life is Unfair!

This is the story of how the perfect family became not so perfect. Many people envied the McDonald family. All their neighbors said they were “a little too perfect”. The McDonald family was made up of a mother and father who were both lawyers at promising law firms, a fourteen year old daughter who was a cheerleader and a grade point average of 3.7, and the star of the McDonald family- seventeen year old Natt. Everybody loved Natt, his sister Brooke loved him the most. But things changed for the McDonald family. For them change wasn’t always so good. It all started when Natt began his senior year of High School, with high hopes and expectations. He was ecstatic about his little sister’s entrance into the ninth grade because he wanted to help her make the Riverdale cheerleading squad. He himself set school president and becoming quarterback and captain of the football team, on his list of goals. He was prepared to have the best senior year ever. Natt had practiced everyday during the summer at the Riverdale Park. While he threw the ball to one of his friends, his sister would make up cheers and perform them for him. After the day ended he would tell her what he liked and what she should change. When they got home he would tell his sister “Remember sis never give up”. Then they would both say at the same time “Practice makes perfect”. The first week of school started off great. Since Natt was already popular from the year before, things went easy for him. It was time for the school elections and Natt had been working on his campaign and speech for the entire weekend. As soon as you walked into the hallways at Riverdale High all you could see was “Vote 4 Natt, I will never turn back” on gold and green flyers on every gray locker in the hall. The day of the speech started off great. Natt had aced his first math quiz which he thought was a sign of good luck. At 3:15, fifteen minutes before his big speech Natt was in the bathroom practicing. As he stood up in front of that microphone and ended with his motto “Vote 4 Natt, I will never turn back”, the whole school including the lunch ladies gave a standing ovation. Friday, Natt entered the school with high hopes knowing that the elections were over with. At 8:00 a.m. Mr. Miller posted the ASB list, and Natt won. When he saw that paper on the green bulletin board he screamed with so much joy. Progress reports came out two weeks before football try-outs and cheerleading try-outs. Students must have had a grade point average of at least a 3.0 to join any sport. Knowing that, it made it nerve wrecking for Natt to know his grades. Brooke wasn’t worried at all, she had been getting A’s and B’s since elementary school. On the other hand Natt had only gotten A’s and B’s during his junior year of high school. He had received B’s, C’s and D’s throughout most of elementary and middle school. Natt and Brooke decided to open their progress report cards together. “On the count of three”, Natt said.“Ready one, two, three”.“Alright A’s and B’s again! What did you get Natt?”“No way”! “What?” “Straight A’s”! “Congratulations bro”. “Thanks sis, now we can try-out next week”. The day of the try-outs, both Brooke and Natt were exhausted. They were up all night practicing together in their backyard. At 3:30 Brooke and Natt had their try-outs at the exact same time. Brooke was in the gym and Natt was out on the football field. Brook was flawless at her routine, and Natt’s passes were incredible. When the results were posted Brooke made the cheerleading squad and Natt became captain and the quarterback of the football team. Saturday night was the night of the big game. Brooke came to the came with her parents and Natt said that he was going to drive there with a couple of friends. When the game started Natt was no where to be found. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were beginning to worry. Fifteen minutes into the game the police arrived at the high school’s football field. They pulled out Mr. and Mrs. McDonald out of the stands and explained to them that Natt’s car was crushed by a drunk driver driving semi-truck and unfortunately Natt didn’t make it. Mrs. McDonald fainted. The game was stopped and postponed until the next day. The first few months were so hard without Natt. His mom became very depressed and didn’t go to work for a month and a half. When she did return to work, she didn’t talk to anyone unless she had to. All Mrs. McDonald was sit at her desk, make phone calls, and file paperwork. Natt being gone was even tougher on Mr. McDonald. It didn’t show, but Mr. McDonald was torn up inside. He wasn’t able to sleep for days. He knew he had to return to work to provide for his family. Since he wasn’t able to sleep well, sometimes he would doze off and dream about throwing the ball to his son in the park or going to a baseball game with the entire family. When he woke up, he realized it was just a dream and that his dream would never become a reality. Broke was affected the hardest. She quit cheerleading and her report card showed that her grades had dropped dramatically. She went from receiving A’s and B’s to receiving C’s and D’s. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were so wrapped up in their own problems they didn’t even notice their daughter. No one knew how to help the McDonald family, all the neighbors could do was sit and watch time go by. Natt had put on his driver’s license that he was a donor. His heart was needed by someone and it was given to that person. Mr. and Mrs. McDonald were so sad that they decided to try and find the person who received Natt’s heart in order to make their life a bit happier. Three months passed by with no sign of who might have received Natt’s heart. One day the phone rang, it was the Riverdale hospital. Brooke had answered the phone. The woman on the other line asked to speak with Mr. or Mrs. McDonald, so she passed the phone to her mom. As soon as she hung up Mrs. McDonald started crying. When her husband asked her what was wrong, she explained to him that the boy who had received Natts heart was looking for them too. They made plans to visit him and his family in South Gate, a town about a half an hour away from Riverdale. The day they had planned to go visit him, Brooke really didn’t want to go. When they arrived early in the morning, the McDonalds were greeted by Mr. and Mrs. Donovan and their fifteen year old son Jason. When Brooke laid her eyes on Jason you can say she fell head over heels. She thought he was cute or in teen words hot. He was about 5ft 9in and had blonde hair and blue eyes. He was wearing jean shorts and a t-shirt since it was a hot day. She couldn’t believe that her brother saved his life. The morning started with Mr. and Mrs. McDonald and Mr. and Mrs. Donovan both talking about their sons achievements. Jason told Brooke about how he played the guitar and how he suffered from a heart problem for two years and that doctors said that if he didn’t get a new heart within a year he could have had a massive heart attack that could have killed him. Thanks to Natt he survived and now could fulfill his dream of having his own band. At the end of the day Brooke and Jason exchanged cell phone numbers and invited him to what would have been Natt’s graduation. Jason agreed to go. The day of the graduation, Brooke was invited to give a speech, on behalf of her brother. She started out… “My brother was my hero and I miss him terribly. I was at the fact that part of my brother was going to be part of someone else. Now I am thankful, because my brother saved the life of a great person (Glancing quickly over at Jason) . To end my speech I would like to say become a donor, and save a life. Thank you.”
