that was the info. now for the story :]

The earphones attached to my iPod were still plugged in my ears as I got out of my burnt orange Saturn Eclipse to pump gas. I had been driving for three days from Syracuse, New York to my hometown of Los Angeles, California. I was nearly there too.

"So kiss me like you did. My heart stopped beating. Such a softer sin," I sang louder than I meant to.

"Hey emo kid! Shut the fuck up!" a preppy looking guy yelled at me from the pump behind me.

"Fuck you! Go rape your hamster’s ass, bitch!" I yelled back glaring at him.

"Oh yeah, whatcha gonna do now?" He snatched the beanie off my head.

"Hell no." That was my favorite beanie. My boyfriend from middle and high school, that I still loved, gave it to me. I left the pump in my car and chased after the guy.

"Little girl! Quit running around like that before you get hurt," a woman yelled out of a mini-van. I flipped her the bird. She looked angry and sped off screeching her tires in the process. The guy stopped by his gas hog of a truck. He was at least six feet tall and kept dangling the hat just out of my reach. I jumped for it, and he snatched it away again.

"Bit beyond your reach shorty?" He laughed along with his preppy friends that were piling out of the truck to see this.

"Hah, you’d be surprised," I said. He laughed again. I brought my hand back and balled it into a fist. It collided with his nose, and he stumbled backward into the pump. I snatched my beanie as he grabbed for his bleeding nose.

"How’s it feel to have your nose broken by a five foot, eighty pound girl? Huh, tough guy?" I laughed and so did a couple of his friends. I walked back to my car to find the pump was through. I reached in my pocket for my debit card and the guy came back and snatched it. He went to his truck.

"Back for more, eh?" I kicked his balls. He immediately dropped the card slouching forward. I grabbed his shoulders and slammed his nose onto my knee. He fell backwards rolling on the ground clutching his nose and balls.

"That ought to pop that back in place," I said picking up my card. I paid and pulled out of the station waving my beanie out the window as the guy flipped me off. I threw my head back in laughter and cranked up my CD. It was The Used In Love and Death. I put my beanie on feeling safe again and thinking of the guy who gave it to me. Sonny Moore. I remembered that night like it was yesterday. We were thirteen years old…

"Stacey, I have a present for you," Sonny said taking me to his back yard by my hand.

"But it’s not my birthday or anything," I protested squeezing his hand.

"I know." He squeezed back and led me to the wooden swing at the very back of his large fenced yard. He sat me down and reached underneath the swing. He slid out a box. He pulled from it two root beers in the old-fashioned glass bottles.

"Thanks Sonny. I really like root beer," I said gladly accepting the bottle.

"I know, that’s why I got it, but that’s not the present." He pulled out a black beanie with skull and crossbones and two purple hearts on it. He handed it to me. I gave him a hug. I put it on and said,

"It’s so pretty! I love the skull."

"I got a matching one with pink hearts instead." He smiled that innocent grin of his. I reached to his eye and wiped away an eyeliner smudge.

"You’re so adorable." He kept grinning. He became serious and said,

"I have to tell you something important." I nodded, urging him to continue. He made me put down my root beer and took both my hands in his. "I love you." His eyes sparkled in the moonlight. I gave him a questioning look. He nodded.

"I love you too," I said smiling. Sonny made me feel good and like I could do anything I wanted to. I’d never been in love before, but I’d liked plenty of other guys. With him, it was different. I wasn’t sure if it was love or not. All I knew was that it made me feel right saying that I loved him.

He touched my cheek. It gave me goose bumps, the good kind. Every time he would touch me so gently, as if he were afraid he would break me, it gave me the chills. His soft lips touched mine. We held it for a second. He pulled away and said,

"I love the way you glow in the moonlight." My cheeks turned pink.

He put his lips on mine again and our mouths parted. This was new to both of us and somehow, I knew exactly what to do. Our tongues danced around each other. His hand that was on my cheek took my beanie off and was now entwining his fingers in my hair. His other hand found my waist. Both my arms snaked behind his neck and up to the spike of hair at the back and top of his head. We pulled away and cuddled and kissed looking up at the stars for at least an hour, but who was keeping track anyway? We were living in the moment.

Leave it to Sonny to do adorable things like that just to see me smile. I still missed him. Before that night we had been together for a year, and after that night we were together for three more until I had to move to Syracuse. My dad had gotten a job transfer. The thing I remembered best about Sonny was the way that when you were with him, he made you live in the moment. You couldn’t think of anything than being with him right there and then. The past and future meant nothing. It was like it was your last moment with him.

I heard from someone that he had moved around too, just not permanently. For what, I don’t remember anymore. I just hoped that he was back. I was headed back to Los Angeles in hopes of seeing my Sonshine again. I remembered the guy at the gas station. Man, California boys can be such a drag…
