The water thundered into her ears, forced itself down her throat, and burned its way into her nose, her lungs, and her brain. The girl’s dead, limp body was carried to the surface of the murky water by the ferocious hands that had drowned her. The slender vampire pulled the body behind him as he swam speedily across the lake towards the forests that lie just on the other side. That was all Ben could call home anymore after the war had started. Ben had lived with his two brothers, his sister, and his parents, but they had all split up for safety after a surprise attack two years before. Ben’s family hadn’t gone terribly far from each other he had heard, but he still doubted they could survive on their own. As far as Ben was concerned, he was the last of the Werth family—the last of the pureblood vampires.

Ben reached the shore and walked quickly to a tree, carrying the corpse in his arms. He dared not glance at her dismantled face he knew would stare back in a lifeless daze. He had killed innocent humans too many times to remember, yet each time he looked at their face, he did. Ben sighed and opened his mouth to reveal his gleaming fangs. He lowered his teeth to her neck, and in one quick motion sunk them in as far as he could, sucking her blood into his mouth. The warm blood raced down his throat and he took more until he was satisfied.

“What a wonderful taste…” he muttered to himself, licking his lips.

Just then he heard the noise he had been dreading most directly beside him.

The evil vampire laughed as he watched Ben and took a step closer to him.

“I’ve been looking for you, Ben,” he said, smiling and flashing his pointed teeth.

Ben jumped up and into a crouching position, lips curled.

“I’ve been waiting,” he hissed.

The evil vampire also crouched low, sneering at Ben, waiting for the first attack. A hard, cool breeze quickly passed by and beside the evil vampire there appeared another. Ben stared at her for a moment, shocked by her beauty. Her black hair was shoulder-length, straight, and silky. She noticed Ben’s gaze and grinned wickedly.

The evil vampire turned to her, saying, “I’m glad you decided to come, my Natalie. I’ve missed you dearly.” He smiled at her and she smirked.

Turning his attention back to Ben, he froze sniffing the air. Ben caught a hint of other vampires’ scents, but held his position. Ben’s eyes darted to the side as he thought he smelled a scent so familiar it could have been his own…

Natalie closed her eyes, sniffing the air.  “I’m not sure who they are, Patrick, but they’re definitely more than we can handle at once.” Her eyes opened fearfully towards her partner.

Patrick’s eyes widened as five vampires stepped out from the trees behind Ben, followed by four more all hissing loudly. Ben clenched his jaws and grinned at Patrick as the vampires formed a line beside him.

Patrick and Natalie immediately took a step back and stood motionless.

“Get out of here,” a large, muscular vampire commanded.

Patrick opened his mouth wide and hissed at Ben, loudly and fiercely. Ben’s eyes sharpened.

“I’ll find you again…but next time you won’t have anybody to protect you,” Patrick promised as he and Natalie turned and fled through the woods.

Ben relaxed and glanced at the good vampires beside him, searching for the uncannily familiar scent, but found nothing. A blonde male stepped up.

“She left after she sensed it was you,” he stated, staring blankly at Ben.

Ben took a step towards the forest where they had immerged from, curiously. “Who?” he asked, walking into the woods.

“She hasn’t seen you in two years. She was just afraid,” another vampire said, catching up to Ben. The whole group followed after Ben who was now running. Ben’s anger boiled as he realized they weren’t going to let him see who it was. Ben smelled the air again, following the strong scent. Suddenly, the vampire beside him leaped onto his back and pulled him down.

“You can’t see her!” he cried, holding Ben back.

“See who?” he shouted, flipping the vampire onto his back. “Who are you hiding from me?” Ben suggestively pressed his deadly fangs against the vampire’s throat, hoping for an answer.

“Never,” he replied, attempting to kick Ben off.

Ben quickly pierced the vampire’s wrists and held them down, his legs being unmovable by the weight of Ben legs against them. Ben lifted his hand, moving it to the vampire’s face and quickly slashing his cheek.

The vampire cried out in pain. “It was your sister Emily!!” he screamed.

Ben looked curiously into his eyes and jumped up. Ben shook his head, walking off into the woods. None of the other vampires stopped him this time.

The sky grew dark and the moonlight guided his path as he wondered aimlessly into the forest.  Ben came across an oddly formed tree and sat on the ground before it.

“It’s okay, my brother,” a voice whispered in the wind.

Ben looked up, tears strolling down his face. “Where…where have you been this whole time, Emily? Two years and no word from anyone??”

Emily stepped out from a tree behind him and sat beside him. “I’m sorry,” she muttered. “I’m here now though.” Looking into Ben’s forgiving eyes, she could see that all was well.
