Somnio Despero Ch. 5 [final part]

“There was a lot Jasmine wasn’t telling you,” Daphne explained seriously.

“In Somnio Despero, Jasmine’s dreams and fantasies came to life, but so did her personal demons. They became the “villains” of her story. Eventually   they began to corrupt her the longer she stayed, and Somnio Despero became more fragile. She could no longer control these demons of hers, and soon they were turning Jasmine against me. It was them chasing us on the way to Chandall Hotel. They, like me, have become real enough to stay in the real world. I, not Jasmine, went to get you hopes that she would come to her senses. But…. I guess that didn’t work,” she said softly.

“What will happen to you?” Patrick asked.  “What will…” his throat tightened, “happen to Jasmine?”

Daphne looked at Patrick sadly, “Jasmine was lost a long time ago. She gave up hope, and now there’s nothing left.”

        Patrick hung his head.

“As for me,” she continued, “I’m just a figment of imagination. Who knows where I’ll go.” She shrugged.

The two of them left the elevator. Outside it was raining, particularly hard, it seemed, over the Chandall Hotel.

“Could I walk home with you?”   Daphne asked shyly. “I want to be around someone who can see me for a little longer before I have to find somewhere else to stay.”

Patrick nodded, overwhelmed with all that he’s just heard.

Daphne followed Patrick all the way up to his apartment. Patrick turned the key to his door.

“You can come in for a little bit,” he said t Daphne. “It’s not much, but…..”

He suddenly froze. There at his desk, he saw himself sleeping, his head buried in his arms surrounded by paints and pencils.

Patrick spun around to look at Daphne. She smiled, her image slowly getting dimmer.

“Some of the most real things are in our dreams,” she said. She waved, and the room became dark……

Patrick snapped up his head it was morning. Had he really been dreaming? He rubbed his eyes.  Of course, it was dream, he told himself. I’ve been just so stressed lately…..

He put his arms down when something crackled. Picking up a crumpled piece of paper, he unfolded it carefully to see a beautiful woman and a maple leaf. She looked oddly familiar. Later, Patrick thought he saw a girl in paisley rush through the city, curls flying, although he couldn’t say why he felt he knew her.

Suddenly an idea popped in his head, Patrick knew exactly what to make his next comic about.

The End
