The Way We Were - Part Two

Fiction Created on 1-3-08 Views(16) Story Rating G

Light filtered in through a black lace draped window, and fell across a wine red comforter. The incessant buzzing of an alarm pierced the air, yet the still form in the bed did not move. Five minutes had passed, and still the alarm rang, when it was joined by the ring tone from a cell phone, a light fun tune which was slightly reminiscent of the theme song from Sex and the City. At this new disturbance, the sleeping form finally began to stir. Slowly, she sat up, her black and red hair tousled from sleep. Her full mouth opened wide in a yawn as she reached over to her night stand to shut off her alarms. Rubbing her eyes with one hand, and running her fingers through her hair with the other, she scooted over to the edge of her bed. She gently placed her bare feet on the cold wooden floor, and wiggled her black tipped toes against the cold. Her bi colored eyes tightened as she yawned once more, stretching her arms straight up in the air, high above her head. She gloried in the feeling of her muscles being pulled tight in that painfully pleasant way.

Arching her back in one last final stretch, she pushed up off the bed and then raised up on her tips toes, feeling the stretch all throughout her body. As she came down, she felt the familiar rush going to her head, the familiar jolt of pain, and dizziness that came every time she stretched like that. But it just felt too good to stop. She did not move as she waited for it to pass, wondering if this time she would fall back on her bed or not. Her body was swaying backwards, ever so slightly, but it lessened each time, until she was fine again. She shook her head and padded off in the general direction of her bathroom. Half way there she stopped, and decided coffee first, so it would not be ruined by the after effects of brushing.

She shivered a little as her feet touched the black and white checkered tile when she entered the room. She stepped quickly over to her cabinet, and pulled out a coffee mug, sat it on the counter, then crossed to the white refrigerator, where she pulled out a bottle of liquid coffee mate. She went back to the mug, filled it a quarter full with the creamy white liquid, poured the hot black, already made coffee in, scooped up the mug in one hand, half ran back to the fridge, and tossed the bottle back in as she left the kitchen. She made a detour to her bathroom, where she grabbed a soft fluffy terry cloth robe, and then continued on to her family room, the only carpeted room in the entire apartment. She gave a sigh of relief as her feet sank into the warm carpet. With a smile on her face, she walked over to her favorite chair, this large overstuffed green chair, that was perfect for curling up into. She sat down, curled her legs underneath her, and took a sip of her coffee. "So good." She said to herself. "So now, what to do? Don't have to work today…so, read? Write? Watch TV? Hmm, the choices are so plentiful." Talking to herself was a habit she had fallen into when she moved out on her own. Well, technically she had always talked to herself, but now she did so out loud, because there was no one else to talk to.

"Hmm, music, that sounds good for the moment." She reached down into the cushion of the chair and pulled out a little remote control, which she used to turn on her stereo. After a few moments symphonic rock began to pour out of her speakers. Her head bobbed along to the beat as she tucked the remote away again, and settled back against the seat, and took another sip of coffee. For a moment her mind was blissfully blank, but then, images and thoughts of the night before began to interrupt the peaceful moment. Things had looked so good at the start of last night. Going to her favorite club, planning on meeting some friends, but no, he had to be there. "Oh my God how did he even find me? It could not have been a coincidence. Or was it? That would be my luck…but no, I doubt it. So why is he looking for me? What does he want now…" Her voice trailed off as one of the most obvious answers came to mind. What did all men want? What did he take so forcefully the night before? The realization came to mind that she could technically report him for rape, but she discarded that idea as soon as it popped up. Not only would they give it no credence, considering who he was, and what their situation was, but she could not bring herself to do that to him. He did not hurt her…well, last night at least. In fact he was even considerate enough to make it pleasurable for her as well. That fact bothered her the most in truth, the fact that he was even still capable of bringing her to such heights, the fact that she trusted him enough to let herself go with him. "Ugh, why me, why now?! What the fuck!?" She smashed her hand into the arm of the chair, releasing some of her anger and frustration.

She sat there quietly, her eyes closed, as her breathing eventually slowed, and her heart stopped beating so quickly. She opened her eyes slowly and sat there for a minute. Then with a grim look of resolution on her face, she downed her coffee, stood up, strode first to her kitchen to drop her mug in the sink, and then back into her bathroom. Fifteen minutes later, her teeth had been brushed, her face scrubbed, and clothes changed. She stood at her door in a pair of jean capris, and a black spaghetti strap, struggling to put on her favorite pair of black monochrome converse. After tucking the laces in, she straightened up, grabbed a jacket, and made sure she had all her essentials, like id, debit card, chap stick and lip gloss, iPod, and some loose cash. With a half grin on her face, she put her headphones in, hit play, and walked out of her apartment, leaving strains of Red Hot Chili Peppers echoing behind her.

The streets were crowded, lots of people were hurriedly making their way along, scurrying to who knew where. The harsh morning sunlight glared into her eyes, and she frowned as her eyes squinted. She walked along aimlessly, with no real destination in mind, and somehow ended up at the Starbucks a few blocks away from her apartment. When she walked in, she was recognized by the girl behind the counter. "Hi Aislinn!" said the short, cute, fresh faced teenager. "Howdy Gracie! Like the hair this week!" The girl fingered her short blonde locks, which were now colored with bright orange chunky highlights. Last week it had been long blue extensions, and the week before that multi colored spikes. She was always changing her hairstyle, and it somehow remained healthy, something that was quite surprising considering how often she colored it. Aislinn walked over to the counter, happy to have someone to converse with. "So, ya want your usual today?" "Yes please, but do me a favor, and give me three extra shots of espresso." The girls blonde eyebrows shot up to meet her hairline, as she cocked her head to the side and gave Aislinn a questioning glance. "I would rather not talk about it! So how goes things in your world? You managed to catch the eye of that stud muffin Bobby just yet?" Inwardly she grimaced at the names of these kids, Gracie, Bobby, what the hell man?!

Gracie looked at her a moment longer, and then shrugged, grabbing a clear plastic cup and going to the frappucino machine and launching into the latest details of her not so note worthy love life. Bobby was this cute little kid who had been Gracie's best friend since pre k, and who she had developed a huge crush on for the past four months or so, but so far he had yet to notice the spunky seventeen year old in any way other than that of buddy….or so she thought. He had been coming by the Starbucks frequently when he knew she was working. He went out of his way to be there at least twice every time she worked, even going so far as to take his lunch break there, when he worked ten blocks away, and was late getting back, even though he ran! That earned him a nice long scolding from his boss. Aislinn was just waiting for them to realize that their feelings were not as one sided as they both believed, and was looking forward to hearing all about it whenever it did finally happen. The girl's chatter flowed over here soothingly, allowing her to focus on something other than her own troubles.

A large whipped cream topped drink was plopped down on the counter in front of her, and she grinned as Gracie went to the register, and punched the buttons. She had the cash in her hand already, and held it out in front of her. Without stopping her diatribe, Gracie reached over, took the money, opened the cash drawer and put it in, got the change and shut it. As the drawer closed, she took a breath and said "So yeah, I dunno what hes thinking these days," finishing her story about how Bobby supposedly had a crush on some little cheerleader at their high school. Hiding a grin, Aislinn made soothing noises to the upset girl, hoping soon she would see the ploy for what it was. Bobby was trying to make her jealous, the only question was, did he know now that she liked him and was trying to force her into making the first move, or was it just a test to see if she liked him? "Ahh, to be back in high school," she chortled. "Im sorry hun, he'll come to his senses soon, I promise! In the meantime, don't go nuts, ok?! You know what to do with the change, and I will see you later ok?" Gracie slipped the leftover cash into the tip cup, and smiled. "Ok, bye!"

As she left the coffee shop, she felt better, the conversation having served to get her headset in a better place. She chuckled and shook her head as she turned to the right and began walking again. The streets were still crowded, but now there was some cloud covering shielding them all from the sun. At some point while she had been talking with Gracie she had decided to go to her local bookstore for a bit. As she walked she sang along with her iPod, head banging slightly, which brought more than a few amused glances her way. People grinned and shook their heads as they went back about their business. One however did not. A man stood up, and began following her, unnoticed, by most but he did not quite escape everyone's attention. One man's glare stayed with him for a block or more, before finally ending in an angry shake of the head with a few muttered words. He stood up and strode off purposefully in the other direction.
