SECRET HEALTH DANGERS
|
The reason behind yeast or urinary tract infections isn't always bad luck. Find out how stuff like what you eat and wear can hurt your health - and what to do about it!
The risk: Your sweet tooth
The result: Yeast infections
The reason: Yeast thrives sugar, so the more candy, soda, and sugar energy drinks you put into your bloodstream, the more likely it is that yeast will overgrow in your body, putting you at risk for an infection.
The fix: Cut about half the sugary snacks from your diet. (They contain processed sugars that get absorbed faster than natural sugars, spiking your blood sugar level.) Satisfy your sweet tooth with fruit, which gets digested more gradually, helping you avoid a sugar overload.
The risk: Smoking
The result: Smokers are twice as likely yo get vaginal bacterial infections as non smokers, and they also have a higher risk of abnormal Pap smear results and cervical caner.
The reason: Chemicals in smoke kill protective vaginal baceria, leaving you vulnerable to infection, and nicotine (a carcinogen) lingers in the cervix, which can cause cells to mutate or develope abnomally.
The fix: Don't smoke. If you've already started and need help qutting, visit lungusa.org and try Quit Smoking Action Plan.
The risk: Not changing your tampon often enough
The result: Vaginal infectons or irritation, and, in rare cases, toxic shock syndrom (TSS)which includes symptoms like fever, rash, and muscle aches.
The reason: When tampons are left in too long, they become a breeding ground for unhealthy bacteria and toxins, which can lead to infections.
The fix: Change your tampon every two to six hours, depending on how heavy your flow is. Match tampon absorbency to your flow (for a light flow, use a regular or light tampon; use super and super plus for a heavy flow only)
The risk: Thong underwear
The result: Urinary tract, bladder, or vagnal infections.
The reason: The thin string of the thong can slide back and forth, causing irritaion and moving bacteria frm your anus into your urethra and vagina, which can lead to infection. Synthetic fabrics dont allow your skin to breath, which can also promote bacterial growth, causing irritation or infections.
The fix: If you waer thongs, try switching to full-coverage panties every other day, and never wear a thong when you work out. Also, wear cotton only.
The risk: Your antibiotic
The result: Yeast infections.
The reason: Doctors prescribe antibiotics to kill "bad" bacteria that cause acne and infections. But an antibiotic can also wipe out "good" bacteria in your body, which is there to keep yeast from growing out of control. With lower levels of that good bacteria, you're at risk for a yeast infection.
The fix: If your doctor prescribes an antibiotic tell him/her if you're prone to yeast infections and he/she might order a milder one. Also, a yogurt a day can help restore healthy bacteria
