Chapter 3
“Your sister?” he asked quietly.
“Yes, so please!” I pleaded. His hands were shaking. “What's wrong?” I asked, I didn't think he would react to me telling him I had a sister. I guess he might have a heart after all. He hugged me tight and brought out a knife behind me. I started to draw in sharp breaths unsure of what he intended to do. He drew it down my back without cutting me as his arms were wrapped around me. I closed my eyes tight waiting for the cut. He hesitated, and then I heard it.
I was waiting to feel the pain and when I didn't I opened my eyes. He was standing in front of me. My hands were free from the binds, he cut the rope. He leaned over and cut the binding around my legs too. I didn't know what to do. I jumped up and ran over to him hugging him tight and thanking him. He froze and then returned the hug. “But why?” I asked.
“Because your a good sister.” he told me. I thanked him again. He began to tell me a story sitting down. I looked around glancing over at the door but sat down too.
When I was 8 my parents were killed. He began the tale. I had no other relatives or siblings. No gang was after my family, they were killed in a car wreck. So I had nothing to do but gather others like me. I quickly became a gang leader of five others to survive. “So the others out there are the kids you gathered?” I asked. “Yes” he told me.
“But why did you kidnap me?”
“I wanted to know why you told me there were cameras.” he answered.
“Because I'm similar to you, and I saw hurt in your eyes. Oh and I didn't feel like you killing me.” he smiled.
“Okay. You have to go now.” he told me standing up.
I let him lead me out the back and then when he left I stayed a little longer to listen. He went back to the other guys and told them he was done. They asked where I was, saying they wanted a little fun. He told them he threw me out with the rest of the garbage by the time he was done. They laughed and said they will have to pick me up if they see me around again. I gasped but no one heard, except maybe the leader who tilted his head in my direction cautiously. He told them that if they ever did pick me up again I was to be untouched and unharmed and I was his. They agreed and I left quietly. I ran to my next job at the department store and talked to the manager. I wasn't fired. I sigh with relief leaving the intimidating office and heading straight to the back to do my job. Quickly I try to catch up on the lost time. The manager had offered me a day off after what happened to me but I needed the pay and declined.
During the time I was working in the back one of the new workers we hired came to help me. He was really nice and we carried on a conversation but in the back of my head I kept wishing I had asked the name of the guy who kidnapped me earlier.
“Oh sorry, where are my manners, my name is Ken.” he told me rambling on. I never thought I would meet a guy who could carry on a conversation with out any help better than a girl. I laughed inwardly.
“And you are?” he prompted.
“Me? I'm Ada.” I responded not really paying attention to him.
“Nice to meet you Ada.” he continued on and on and on. I only caught maybe half of what he was saying. But basically he told me all about his family, interests...etc. But I don't really remember what he said. Finally I finished my duty in the back and waved to him as I headed to the front to man the cash registers.
I let my mind wander and was content with today having slow business. It was almost silent, that is until my luck ran out and Ken showed up to man the other cash register. “OH HI!” he exclaimed again. Starting his mouth running, brings a whole new meaning to motor mouth. I rummaged through my little space with my name under it beneath the counter and brought out my reading book. Ken didn't notice or didn't care and I was able to read through my math from my homeschooling until job number 2 was up at 3 p.m.
Job number 3 I raced to happy it was the last of the day. This time I was a tailor and as I headed to the shop a man joined me. Matching his stride to mine. I panicked worried I had been careless and they had found me.
I was lucky, I guess to find out it was the guy who kidnapped me earlier. “What do you want.” I asked skidding to a stop. He did the same and smirked at me. “Well I'm following you of course.” he remarked smiling. “Fine but tell me your name and after this job your not allowed to follow me, got it?” I told him. “Fine, fine,” he agreed and I found out his name was John. He asked mine and I told him no so he sped up and stood right in front of me. Causing a collision and a crash as I fell to the ground. He pinned me down and told me to tell him my name.
