Chapter 9

“Yeah, EWWW!” I said scowling at him angrily. “Look we can be friends if you back off, okay?”

“Hmm”

“So you will back off now?” I ask again.

“No, because I don't believe you.” he replied turning away as we arrive at my house and he heads home. I stomp my feet and slam the door on the way in. “Jerk, jerk, jerk, jerk” I kept mumbling to myself as I went to my room and got changed for bed.

I laid down and when I was about to slip into a peaceful slumber my phone blared out annoyingly. I glanced at the luminary clock in the corner of my room flashing too bright for my drowsy eyes. It was just after midnight and I stumbled over to my phone sitting on top of my dresser in the charger. Pulling the charger cord out and dropping uncaring to the floor I answer in a meek voice.

“Hello?” I had forgotten to check the caller I.D, so I was unsure of who it was.

“Mika.” AH! I recognized the voice and sighed deeply while plopping down on my bed.

“What no Kadeem. Haven't you done enough for one night. I'm tired and I have school tomorrow, so if you don't mind I would like to go back to bed.”

“Mika wait! I just wanted to tell you. If you give me a chance I promise I won't hurt you.”

“Kadeem...I don't know what to say. I'm touched but that doesn't change that I don't have feelings like that for you. Good night now.” I told him hanging up before he could protest.

I fell back down onto my bed and stared up at the ceiling. I started to think but before I even knew what it was I was pondering I drifted off. The next morning I knew I didn't sleep well since all of my blankets and pillows were strew across the floor and I was in an odd position. Half hanging off the bed and partly up the wall. Kicking my legs up and flipping around I got out of bed complaining to myself of the back and neck ache I had. Eating breakfast, brushing my teeth and hair, getting dressed and gathering my things I rode my moped to school which was very conveniently only five blocks down.

When I got there, there was a group of kids gathered outside and staring at something. I was about to ignore it and pass it up when I heard a girl scream. I dash off the moped and head up to see what the commotion was about. There were five girls in the middle of the circle of onlookers. Four in a half circle looking down on a bloody girl who they had just slammed into rocks. I examined the girl from the back of the onlookers and saw she was breathing and recognized who the girls were. One of the four girls who had beaten the middle up was the girl picking on Akira and the girl who was on the ground was Monique.

I run over to Monique's side and lift her head to see where she is bleeding. Blood is coming from her hip and arm. The four girls sneer and look me over. I rise and stand over Monique's body. One of the girls to my right grabs a handful of my hair and so I jab her with my elbow and she wails wildly dropping from the “fight” I realize that they would do damage, but they couldn't take any themselves. All I needed to do was give them a little pain and they should back off for good. I ask them to leave and stop this fight so I could get Monique to the nurse. They laugh and taunt me getting closer. I take a breath and let it out in a relaxed sigh.

I really was so sick of fighting and having to prove something to people. But I only did it for others sake, never for my own. Another ran up to me and I gave her a simple push to force her out of the circle and into the crowd of people. She never returned to the fight either. These girls were not in for anything serious, they simply fight until stood up to. The last two come at me the same time one I swing around just missing the other. The last girl is the one who was tease Akira too. I grabbed her and warned her to leave Akira and Monique and everyone alone then I stuck my foot out tripping her into her little 'posse' and they all fell. I waved over a strong looking guy who had just pulled up without really looking at him and asked for his help getting Monique to the nurse.

“What happened Mika?” he asked and thats when I noticed I had waved down Mark.

“Tell you later just help me with her.” I begged him. He came over quickly and lifted her up easily. His shirt got blood on it but it didn't seem to bother him.

When we arrived at the nurses I talked to her and Monique was laid in the back as the nurse examined her. Mark and I sat outside the doors and waited. I explained everything that happened and Mark looked amused and commented how it was lucky I showed up. I vented how mad I was no one was going to help her. If it had been someone I didn't know I still wouldn't have let them hurt her. He agreed and apologized for not being there to help. I cocked my head slightly and laughed at him.

“What?” he complained, “I could have helped you.”

“I know, its just a funny thing to say when there's no way you can anticipate this kind of stuff.”

“Yeah I guess.” he agreed.

After awhile the nurse came out and said she called Monique's mom to pick her up and that she would be fine but fractured her arm. She gave Mark and I a pass to class and he waited as I went to say bye to Monique. She told me that they picked on her for no reason and I knew it was true with Monique being so shy. After I told her to call me later I left saying goodbye. Mark walked me to class and then he went to his own. I smiled and waved as he shouted “LATER!”

The day went on slowly and I asked Akira if she was coming over but she said she couldn't. So I found Katie only to find out she was busy too. I decided to take a chance and went to search for Mark. I found him before lunch in the hallway. I asked him if he wanted to hang out after school and he agreed. Before I left him I made it clear it was as friends, and he nodded saying of course, and headed down to class. By the end of the day I was glad to hear the bell sear through the noisy chatter. Everyone left in a hurry and I went down to my locker getting my stuff. By the time I finished Mark was waiting at the end of the hall. “Shall we” he looked down on me when I arrived. I nodded and looked him over for the first time. He was under 6' but still tall. He had dark brown eyes, and hair to match with a longer shaggy style to it. Kind of like the style you would see on a skater type. “we shall” I whispered smiling.

“You know I always wanted a big brother.” I said while he walked by my side.

“Yeah well, I always wanted a good friend.” he replied. My smile widened and he rest his arm across my shoulders.

When we got to my place no one was home but that was no surprise to me. I let myself in and waved Mark to follow. We decided to go down to the park and then watch a movie at my place. We dropped our books on the floor in my room and ran down to the park together laughing.
