Chapter 7

Kadeem was in my next class. I groaned as I sat down next him in the only seat open. He smiled at me and I returned the smile sarcastically. “I see your feeling better.” he remarked. I passed him a note telling him I have been fine and I can't talk, since I don't want to get into trouble. He smiled over at me and then passed the note back saying that my friends are trouble magnets so I have no problem finding it and obviously no issues handling it. I sent it over to him again asking if he was one of those issues that I needed to handle. It takes him longer this time to pass the note back over.

He asked if he was sensing hostility and then wrote he might like that. I ripped the note and told him I don't need his distractions right now. Then I said words dreaded by men, we need to talk. His smile left and he went back to his work. I generally got all A's in my classes so I did not have many problems with my work.

After class I walked out of the room behind Kadeem and pulled him aside. “Kadeem look,” I started nicely. “I appreciated everything but I'm not interested in you like that. In fact I'm not interested in anyone like that.” He looked at his feet seemingly shy. I felt bad about doing this but it was getting over board with him in my house uninvited. “Alright, I hear you Mika.”

“thank you Kadeem.”

“But I won't give up.” he smiled that grin I hated and walked away. I sigh and head down to my locker. Flipping through the combination quickly I swing the door open and replace my books with the next two classes worth.

The day went on slowly, when lunch rolled around I found Akira. We sat with the same group as the first day of school. Akira and I chattered on about the days events. She wasn't surprised with how much had already happened. I wasn't surprised when she told me how her day went. First class went well for her, no problems there. Later though she bumped into a girl and her boyfriend showed up, the girl chewed her out and told her that if she didn't back off her boyfriend will take care of her. I looked at her shaking my head. “Akira are you in the wrong places at the wrong time, or are you really just a magnet?” Or could it be that humanity has grown to a wider population of untrustworthy humans than we know. Or simply because Akira and I don't run from the evil in this world we end up facing it. I thought about these for a minute and missed Akira's response to my question. “MIKA!” she looked at me. “Sorry Akira I zoned out.”

“Yea I figured that out.” We continued talking through lunch and Carole join the conversation. This time I had brought my lunch. A simple sandwich and some chips and a drink was all I needed.

After lunch I went to my next class. Only two more to go I thought. P.E, right now, great!(sarcasm) I jogged down to the gym and when I got there I realized that Katie had the same class with me. She smiled when I walked in and sprinted over to me. I put my books in the corner of the locker room and we got into our gym outfits. “Hey long time no see.” I joked. I was surprised how natural it felt already joking around with her. It was like Akira and I together, thats when I knew she would become a good friend, a third to our duet.

Katie seemed brighter and a lot happier of a person than she was earlier. I smiled all the way through class with Katie getting to know her. She had a really great family. I hoped to meet them one day, even her son. Yes she did have a son from being raped. She decided to have him and a family they knew couldn't have kids so they raise him as their son, and she visits when ever she can. She seemed at ease with the fact she has a two year old who thinks of her as the best big sister in the world.

Katie explained that ending up with a child from the traumatic experience isn't something that ruined her life. It made her realize that people who are out to harm you exist, bringing her from an ignorant child to a mature and growing girl who lives life to the fullest every day. It brings her family closer, opens her to meeting great friends regardless of what they have been through it is who they are today. Gossip hurts but the kid made her strong, she was proud to see a smiling little boy who will live a beautiful life to come out of one nights trauma. “A silver lining in everything!” she declared. I knew this was true and loved how she saw the world at a different tilt like Akira and I.

By the end of class she was beaming and so was I, I couldn't wait for her to meet Akira. We made plans to meet up after school and go to my place. I also told her if she would like she can come on our hiking trip this weekend.

I happily walk to my next class after slipping a note into Akira's locker telling her to meet me after school in the front and that she can meet Katie there too. I ended up being one of the first into class today. I sat down in an empty chair near the back in the middle of the row. I don't think anyone I knew was in this class so I brought out my reading book. I didn't hear the class come in or our teacher bring out the pop quiz.

Some guy who was sitting besides me nudged me and I looked up, the teacher was kneeling and digging though her stuff. He whispered over to me that there was 10 minutes left to take the pop quiz. I squealed quietly and grabbed my pencil rushing to finish. 10 minutes flew by and I was relived when I finished the last question as she got to my desk to pick it up. I looked over at the guy besides me and he was laughing silently. “Thanks” I whispered kind of hostile.

“For warning you or laughing?” he asked blushing.

“Both, but only one appreciated.” I responded also blushing at that point.

The bell rings and I gather my stuff and my fallen reading book. I rush to the door and someone grabs me from behind. I flip around and my hair whips someones face lightly. “Sorry” I tell him when I realize it is the guy from before.

“Whats you name?” he asks shyly.

“Mika. Yours?”

“Mark.”

“Mark, thank you again, but I have to go. Bye!” I shout rushing away and going toward the front to meet Akira and Katie.
