Chapter 7

Finally! Today is here! I jump out of bed eagerly and hope that Jake is an early riser but I will wait all day if I have to, because I need answers. Flying down the stairs I greet my mother who is eating a nice breakfast. She offers me some food but I tell her no thanks. “Whoa, slow down Jina.”

“Mom.” I whine.

“Jina can you not share a meal with your mother?” she looks at me with puppy dog eyes.

“Of course mom.” after all, she is more important than a forgotten past or a boy. She took me in with out any history and she is the one who encourages my wild spirit to follow my impulses. I sit down besides her and we share a smile that means more to us than most mothers and daughters. I have been with her for two years and it seems like we know each other better than most mothers know their daughters, we are best friends. She adopted me after her husband divorced her and she had no children.

We ate well, having crapes with strawberries on them, and other fruits. I drank some milk with it and my mom had orange juice. Our home was nice and fashionable. It always was tidy and smelled nice. But what did you expect with two girls living together. I told my mother the recent updates on Jake leaving out only the underground ice rink part. I loved my mom and she would have been fine knowing about it, but I just didn't feel it was my secret to share.

“Bye Jina!” she called after I told her I would be home later tonight and Fay would be spending the night. She always expected Fay whenever, we were like sisters but closer, and with out the fighting. I walked to the rink, it was only five blocks away. I took the long but scenic way. You rarely see anyone take the extra time for a nice view anymore.

I looked up at the canopy of trees over me as the shade shifted darkening my skin in patches. Someone was coming from the other end, looks like they walked there dog down here. I could hear them humming to their Great Dane. I was surprised how big the dog grew as I got closer. The birds were whistling along with the stranger and before long I found myself doing the same.

I looked to the other side expecting to see the person walking still when the humming stopped. Instead I witnessed a huge dog running at full speed straight for me. It sped and I stood there unsure what to do listening to the owner shouting heel! I yelled for the dog to stop, it heeded neither of us. It was coming up fast and when it reached me I closed my eyes. I opened them one at a time when I wasn't trampled to see the big dog sitting in front of me wagging its tail happily. If a dog could smile at you this one was. I reached out to pet it and the owner running but still behind shouted not to. They said she doesn't like strangers to pet her. My hand was still extended and the dog leaned into it.

I laughed lightly and rubbed her down really well. She panted pleased with this and put her weight against my legs. The owner comes over to me and gives her dog a look then raises an eyebrow at me. “I see” she said. She was at least three years older than me, and told me that she got her dog at the age I was. “You see what?” I ask.

“Uh..oh yes, well she likes you. Its just unusual for her.”

“Hmmm, seems to be happing a lot to me lately.” I told her.

“Yeah I guess there is just something they like about you. Dogs can sense that stuff you know.” she informs me.

“Oh. Thank...you?”

“Mhm.” she nods grabbing the leash to her dog and telling me she has to be off. “Good bye!” I shout.

When I got to the rink I put my skates on and went onto the ice to practice assuming Jake wouldn't be here so early. The other times it had been around just after lunch hour. I held on the edge of the rink to support myself. When I made a full circle around I was proud of myself. I heard a small bark at the entrance and there was a little dog, I recalled his name as George. Still on the ice he runs sliding to me and I sweep him up laughing happily.
