The voices grew louder, and Pete could tell that they were getting closer.   There was no way that he was going back to Indiana, so he got up, and attempted to make his way through the trees to the next road, before anyone could catch him, until he heard someone yell.  "Get him!"  the voice bellowed, causing Pete to panic.  He darted through the trees, several times ripping his arms and legs against the barbed briars on some of the bushes.  Finally, he came upon a clearing, where he found the next road.  He ran down the road for about two blocks, never once looking back.  He learned early on, while playing summer league baseball, that looking back can oftentimes slow you down, and he definitely didn't want to get caught.  After two blocks, he finally felt safe enough to stop and catch his breath.

Pete looked back down the road, expecting to see his pursuers, but no one was there.  Surely, he didn't imagine it, Pete thought, beginning to doubt his own sanity.  Somebody was out there, he just knew it, but he wasn't about to go find out for sure.  Pete lit a cigarette, hoping it would calm his nerves enough to go home.  By this time, his heart was beating so fast, it felt like it was going to explode.   He smoked three cigarettes, then checked his watch, deciding against going out to find a job that day.  His breathing had just returned to normal, so he decided to start walking back to the house.

The walk back to the house was a long one, and Pete was starting to get thirsty.  He felt like he had been walking for about half an hour, but soon realized, however, he hadn't even made it back to the road, where he had sat in the woods.  As he approached the road, he heard a familiar yell, followed by the shouting of several other voices, all at once.  After a few seconds, the roaring and shouting changed to celebratory howls.  Pete started to walk a little faster, wondering now, what all the commotion was about.  As he looked down the road, he noticed a pick-up game of touch football going on, in the middle of the street.  Directly behind the endzone, which was marked by a mailbox on one side of the road, in front of an old run down trailer, was the entrance to the woods, right next to the spot where Pete had sat.

seekerovtruth hahaha Poor Pete! He didn't even get to finish his doobie. That would be freaky to hear someone yell "Get Him!!!" I too would have been assholes and elbows running away as fast as possible in the other direction if that had been me sitting there. Very good! Thanks for answering my cry for more! :)
