After school, it was back to the job search. He tried a few more restaurants, before giving up and going for a walk. He had never had this much trouble finding a job before, and it was starting to make Pete very aggravated. Plus, he was starting to become homesick. He missed all his friends back home, and wanted to be able to talk to them, before he lost his mind. "If I could just find a joint," he thought aloud, trying to calm his frustrations. Then, his dreams were crushed, as soon as he remembered that he spent his last three dollars the day before, on a pack of cigarettes, so he decided to just go home and go to bed, hoping that everything would be better in the morning.
That next morning, Pete walked over to Hardee's to wait for Bean, when he noticed a small group of students, standing behind the drive-thru sign. One of them, a skinnier skater boy, was throwing pieces of his biscuit out for the seagulls, which were now flocking around the group, fighting over the small treat the boy had given them. All of a sudden, Pete watched in horror, as another student ran up and punted the bird, as hard as he could. The rest of the flock erupted into flight, as the victim of this horrendous crime was launched twenty feet across the parking lot, only to be left flapping his broken wing, unable to return to the sky. Within seconds, the school sheriff was over there, hauling the two boys into the school, their fates were now in his hands.
Bean finally showed up, just as the commotion was dying down, and they walked over to the group of skaters, that had been feeding the birds. "You must be the new kid, Crystal's cousin, my name's Kenny," one of the students approached Pete, introducing himself. This kid seems cool enough, Pete thought to himself, before noticing Kenny's left arm. Or lack thereof. Pete had never really encountered anyone with birth defects to this degree, but he thought he'd give him a chance, since he seemed okay.
