Monday morning finally arrived, and the butterflies were getting worse now.  This was Pete's chance to fix everything he had messed up at his old high school.  He had no reputation here, and no reason for the teachers to treat him unfair.  But what brought him comfort, also made him even more uneasy.  Of course, he wanted to finish his schooling and possibly do something with his life, but he didn't want to become a social outcast in the process.  At least it is only a year, Pete thought as he got dressed and started out the door.

"I'm sorry, but it looks like he doesn't have enough credits to be a senior, at our school,"  Gwen listened, as the counselor discussed Pete's transcripts with her.  Pete couldn't sit still, as he was anxious about starting at a new school, so he was pacing around the office, looking out the windows.  "  So, what's that mean?" Pete queried, fearing the worse. "That just means that you will have to enroll as a junior, but if you'd like we can let you pick up a few senior classes, then you will only have to go to school one semester next year,"  the counselor continued, making Pete feel a little better.  It would mean that he would have to stay an extra six months, but it would definitely be worth it, if Pete could make it last.  He couldn't wait to begin, but he would have to wait until the next week, since all the classes were in the middle of taking their yearly standardized tests.  Pete didn't want to wait that long.  He had come down here to finish his schooling, so that is what he planned on doing.  "I would like to start tomorrow, and take the test, if that's possible," Pete begged.  He had been at Randy's for almost a week now, and he was becoming extremely bored around the house.  The only people he knew here were his family, and most of them worked all day, or went to school, and Pete just wanted to get started so it could be over.  He also wanted the opportunity to prove that he wasn't as ignorant as he felt everyone thought he was.  The counselor thought his request over, even asking him several times if he was sure about his decision, before finally telling him that he would be fine to start the next day.  She printed out his list of classes, and they left, Pete, for the first time in a long time, was excited about going to school.

It had been a long time since Gwen had ever seen any real expression on Pete's face.  He was the oldest of five children, except for his stepsister, who lived with her mom and stepdad, so he was pretty much the scapegoat of the family.  Plus, he was a rather awkward child, scrawny and passive, so he was bullied alot by the other kids growing up in his small, Indiana town, but puberty had been fairly good to him.  No longer was he the same, scrawny, chickenlegged kid that everybody picked on.  Now he was just the big guy in the back of the class that everyone was afraid of.  He had been screwed over by so many people, that he had grown very introverted, often hurting the ones that he cared about, just to save himself from being hurt.  Even though he was such a big guy, Pete still felt like the same guy he always did, but was forced to come to the realization that he was a lot bigger and stronger than he had been before, especially when he was angry, which was more and more often.

"You want some breakfast?"  Gwen asked him, as she pulled into the parking lot of the Waffle House. "Sure, if you're paying," Pete replied, realizing that he only had 3 dollars left, and he was running low on cigarettes.  He really wished he could find a job, as the boredom was slowly starting to eat at him, and Randy was on his case more and more each day, so he got an application to fill out while they ate breakfast.  "You can come work at Allen's with me, if any positions open up,"  Gwen told him, as he started to fill out his application.  "Thanks," he said, as a smile slowly spread across his face.
