"First, you will get a job, and you will pay a third of your check to me each week," Pete nodded, as he listened to Randy begin to list the rules that he would have to follow for the next year that he was down there. "Second, you will have a curfew of 8:00 on school nights, the only exception is if you are at work. You will go to church every Sunday, with the family. Also, if you are scheduled to work, that is the only exception for missing church." Randy continued with the rules as Pete listened, "And last, with your history of getting in trouble, if you get suspended for anything, you will be sent back to Indiana. There is no exceptions to this rule, so don't even try it." Pete laughed to himself, because he was trying to think of a loophole, just in case.
The next morning came too early, as his aunt, Gwen, woke him from his deep sleep. He had grown accustomed to sleeping in till noon, since he had gotten expelled, he never really had a reason to get up any earlier. He worked at a truckstop for the last year, so he had made alot of close friends working there. One friend in particular, Terra, was a server at the Denny's where he hung out after he got off work at the truck stop. They had a few classes together, since seventh grade, but they had become better friends over the last year. He introduced her to her fiance, Mike, that summer, and she was pretty much like a sister to him, so, he was very protective of her. Mike was the brother of one of the servers Pete knew from the truckstop, and they hit it off almost immediately, becoming real good friends. About a month before Pete left, Terra broke the news to him that she was pregnant. " You better not have that kid before I get back," Pete told her jokingly, but he knew deep down inside that he wanted to be there for her when she had the baby. "And you better be good to her, and take care of that baby," he told Mike, half jokingly, but mostly serious, as he was getting ready to leave for Florida. Damn, how he missed Indiana already, but he decided to go find a job, so that he could buy a phone card.
"Sorry, we're not hiring now, but you're welcome to fill out an application," Pete was really getting irritated by this point, he had been to six places, and all six told him the same thing. Finally he just went back home, having filled out all six applications anyway. When he got back to the house, Gwen had a surprise for him. His cousin, Glenn, was going to be coming by, and wanted to take him fishing. Pete had not seen Glenn in what seemed like ages, since they moved to Florida when Pete was 10. Glenn was a few years older than Pete, but they always got along good, even though they were usually up to no good.
The fishing didn't go as well as Pete had hoped, since the only thing he caught was a few little fish, the saltwater equivalent of the freshwater bluegill, and a pretty good buzz off the whiskey that Glenn had brought. They stopped at a bar out in the middle of who knows where, had a few drinks, played some darts and pool, just to catch up on things. Glenn had a new girlfriend with two kids, neither was his, but he treated them good just the same. It was fun, Pete thought to himself, but he just wished he could have had his friends there with him. They could've raised so much hell, he quietly reflected, as he tried not to pass out on the way home.
