The expulsion was imminent, Pete already knew that, all he could hope was that they didn't call the cops. He was 17, but would be 18 in just a few months, and he didn't need any of that drama. "If you tell us who gave it to you, we won't get the cops involved," They offered, but Pete was smarter than that. "Some black trucker sold it to me, I don't know his name", it seemed like a good cover to Pete, since he worked at a truckstop, and they didn't have evidence otherwise. They then proceeded with the dreaded phone call to the parents.
The ride home was the longest Pete had ever experienced. He only lived two miles out from the school on an old country road, but on this occasion, it was none too quick. "What the hell was you thinking, Pete?", his mother begged from him. She already knew. He had been this way for years now. The exact same way she was when she was younger. He wanted to do what he wanted, when he wanted, and wasn't anyone gonna stop him. So she tried to offer him some advice. "I'm not gonna tell you what you can do, since I have done it before, and you're gonna do it anyway, but you need to know when to not do it, also," she told him, as they turned down the driveway to head to the house.
"I've made arrangements with your Uncle Randy, you can go stay with him and finish your high school," She told him one morning, as he got ready for work. They had been discussing this for weeks now, since the expulsion was finalized. Randy was her brother who lived in Florida, and they all felt that a change of scenery might do Pete some good. He was fairly strict, but he was also good humored, and he was always one of Pete's favorite uncles. They were gonna try to make this work, and Pete was excited for the first time in a long time.
He thought it was rather ironic that he was being sent to Florida, since he failed out of school. "Hell of a punishment," he thought to himself, chuckling at the irony. But seriously, he was excited to be given the chance to start over and finish his schooling. He was extremely happy to be going somewhere he could start over.
