Lost Friend

Creative Created on 2-19-08 Views(98) Story Rating G

It was aproximately seventeen years ago, when she moved away.  She was the most beautiful girl I had ever seen, and I was the most awkward kid in my fifth grade class.  She moved into a house about half a block from the school, near the beginning of my fourth grade year.  Her house was on the path I walked every morning to go to school, so I would see her, every morning, so we would walk together, becoming good friends in the process.  Normally, this wouldn't be a big deal, but like I said, as a child, I was extremely awkward.  I was one of the tallest in my class, but I was also the skinniest.  Plus with my big melonhead, the big, wide-rimmed glasses that my mom made me wear, probably didn't help.  So, needless to say, I was constantly bullied, so I tried to distance myself from the other kids.  So it was kinda nice to have a friend that I didn't have to worry if they were gonna start bullying me because someone else came around.  We would hang out in the woods behind the school, for hours on end, not a care in the world.  But for some reason, she never wanted to go home.

But then, as quickly as she came, she was gone.  The last memory I have, I was walking to her house.  We were supposed to hang out that night after school.  It was a Friday, and we had plans to hang out all weekend, doing all the usual bullshit, swinging in the trees, ya know, just bein a kid.  But as I neared the house, I noticed her, sitting in the upstairs window.  It looked like she was crying, but I really couldn't tell.  She just sat there and waved, so I went and knocked on the door.  That's when her Stepdad answered the door.  He scared the hell out of me.  First of all, he was a 6 ft  tall, Cherokee Indian, in a small, redneck, Indiana town.  Plus, like I said, I was pretty awkward, so it didn't take much to scare me.  I had seen him before, but he was in a lot different mood this day.    He just opened the door, got down in my face and screamed at me, "She can't come out!!", then he just slammed the door in my face.  I didn't think much of it after that, maybe she just didn't do her chores or something, she'll be able to come out tomorrow.

Saturday morning came, and I didn't even care about my cartoons.  I got on my bicycle, and rode down to her house, hoping to spend the day, hanging out with her.  My brother tagged along, as he always did, but it always worked out before, since she had a sister in his class.  They got along all right, but they mostly got along, because they both liked harassing us.  When we finally got there, I noticed that the house was way to quiet.  I knocked on the door anyways, hoping that maybe they were just watching cartoons, in the living room, and they couldn't hear me beating on the door.  After knocking for what seemed like an eternity, I finally gave up and went home dejectedly, no longer in the mood to play anything, or even watch my cartoons.

Sunday morning, There wasn't any point trying to visit anyone before at least noon.  That was usually my yardwork day, but I got my chores done faster than ever that day.  As soon as they were done I went down, same as before, hoping to catch her at the house, so we could hang out the last day of our weekend.  That wouldn't happen.  I clearly heard the radio or TV on inside the house, but no matter how loud I knocked, no one answered the door.  I sat down on the steps for an hour or so, before finally giving up and going home.

Monday morning, oh great, gotta go back to school.  But when I got up, I didn't feel so great, and after about ten minutes, I found myself huddled over the top of the toilet bowl, puking my guts up.  My mom called the school, and I stayed home that day, the only day I missed at all that year.  I stopped at her house the next morning, same as I had been doing all year, hoping to walk her to school, but she never came out.  I went on to school, only to find out from some of my classmates, that she had had come in on Monday, and told everyone that it was her last day.  She was moving with her mom and sister to Colorado, to get away from her Stepdad.  I tried to figure out how to keep in touch with her, but it was useless, I was only a fifth grader, and I really didn't have any resources.  So I eventually gave up.

Fast forward seventeen some-odd years.  While sleeping one night, I had the strangest dream.   There I was, back in the woods, behind the school.  She was there, and it was just like back in the day.  We were hanging out, having a good ol time, not a care in the world.  But, same as before, it had to end sometime.  When I woke up, though, I had the strangest urge to look her name up on Myspace.  When I did, It gave me 10 pages of results for her name, but I only needed the first page.  The first profile I came across that had a picture, was the only proof I really needed.  It was plain as day, that smile.  but, just to make sure, I checked her friends list, and sure enough, at the top of her friends list, was her sister's name.  I cross referenced the name and confirmed it was her.  We have talked since then, and we are going to try and catch up, but I don't know her anymore, and as much as I would like to, I doubt we could ever be as good friends as we were back then.
