Girl Or Ghost?
|
“Hello. Is this Holly Stepson?”
“Yes. Who’s this? Can I help you?”
“Holly there’s been an accident. Your friend has Danielle has been killed. We can’t tell you yet how she was killed but we would appreciate it if you could come down and answer some questions. We have reason to believe it wasn’t an accident. Because it’s late we can talk tomorrow when you’ve had time to digest the news.”
I tell them that would be fine and disconnect. As soon as I hang up my friends call to invite me to a party. I accept quickly hoping to tell everyone before the police inform them. I ask my mom if I can borrow the car and drive to the cemetery where we always meet before a party. We meet there because everyone without a car can reach it easily. They get a ride to the party with whoever has a car.
As I get out of the car and start walking the rest of the way to the cemetery I realize why no one likes to be here after dark. It’s not exactly an inviting place to be all by yourself. As I look around I can see the trees, vines and bushes. They all seem to be creeping up on me.
I quickly speed up trying to get away. Then I begin to hear voices. Thinking they are comeing from my friends I start running towards the sound. The shadows run after me and hide just close enough to make me feel even more uneasy.
Mabye a cemetery isn’t the best place to meet from now on. I hear a branch crack behind me. I think to myself that it must be an animal or a friend trying to scare me. I stop and look around myself in fear. The darkness is starting to get to me and I’ve never liked the dark to begin with.
I see a shadow dart past me on the left. I jump and whirl around to see what it was. As I turn I see it again to my right. Then I hear a distant thud behind me. This wasn’t a person falling. It sounded more like an animal pouncing on its prey from the top of a tree.
I start running in the direction that I think the car is in. I’m getting out of here. If they want me at the party they can come get me. I head in the wrong direction and before I know it I am in the thick of the woods behind the cemetery… completely lost no less.
I turn and jog in another direction. I find the edge of the woods after a minute and walk out. I can just barely see the car parking lot. I start to run toward it and stop. If there is something here I can’t just leave everyone else without at least warning them.
I hear them giggling and race that way wondering why I didn’t hear them before. As I slow down I see the group of headstones where we normally meet. I stop and look around in confusion. I see no one else at all. Fearful I decide to take a quick peek to see if they are hiding behind the headstones.
I step towards one and someone stands. They are wearing only what looks like a white nightgown and white makeup. I smile as I realize what’s going on. They’re playing another joke on me. Then as I start to laugh John comes up behind me slowly.
“Did we scare you? Allison does a pretty good scary ghost.” As he says this he smiles at me and toward the ‘ghost’ from the graveyard. Taylor comes up next to John with a slightly surprised look.
“Um… John? Who did you get to play Allison’s part for her? She did a good job.” Now it is John’s turn to look confused. He frowns at Tyler and glances back at me with a confused look still on his face.
“I thought that was Allison. I didn’t know she never came. If it’s not her who is it?” Everyone else had drifted out from their hiding spots as we talked. We look at everyone expecting someone to speak up and say they know who it is. No one knew so I went to ask her myself. When I reached her and looked up to ask her she spoke before I could.
“I’ll miss you always. Goodbye Holly. Forever.” I knew in that moment who it was. Danielle had come to say her final farewell to her friends before she moved on to the next world. As she disappeared I walked back to everyone and told them the bad news. As soon as they heard I could tell they all understood what had happened. By the next day everyone knew what had happened.
We ended up going to the party after all. Gina had decided to throw her birthday bash early. In the end the party turned into one for Danielle instead. I don’t think any of us will forget Danielle or that night for as long as we live.Comments
