A Little Push
|
I look at him with pleading eyes, “Daddy! I don’t want to take off the training wheels. I’m not ready, I’ll- I’ll fall! I don’t want to Daddy no!”
He stares at me with a calm expression on his face, “But you don’t even use them anymore. When you ride your bike, you balance perfectly.”
I start to cry. I know my Dad can’t take that. He won’t make me do it now.He walks over to my bike with the wrench. He’s taking off the training wheels!
“No!” I scream. I run inside to find my mom. She is in the living room, reading a book.
“Hey sweetie, what’s wrong?” I tell her what Dad is doing.
She looks at me. She gives me that smile that only a mother can give, “You are ready to do this, Jen. You can! I believe in you.”
I start to cry and tell her all of my fears. Falling, breaking a bone, and scrapping my knee are just some of them. She holds me.
Dad walks into the room and looks at us, “Jen, go ride your bike now.”
I am crying again as I walk outside. My parents follow me. I saw my sister riding her bike up and down the driveway. She didn’t have training wheels. That must mean I can do it too.
I climbed onto my bike and started to pedal. I did the same thing that I had been doing every time I rode my bike.
My balance was perfect. I stop crying as I gained confidence. My hair flew out behind me as I grew in speed.
My sister screamed, “Yeah! Go Jen!”
I’m doing it! I can do this! I’m so happy. I took off down the road toward the white house next door, Grandma’s house. I stop outside there she is on the porch.
“Look!” I said jumping off my bike to go hug her, “I don’t have training wheels anymore!”
“I can see that,” she said smiling.
I run off the porch back to my bike. I ride to the next house, my cousin Ashley’s house.
“ASHLEY!” I scream. I watch her run out of the barn. She ran up to me. I didn’t wait for her to say anything, I hugged her, “I don’t have my training wheels anymore!”
She was so excited that she rode back to my house with me. Ashley, my sister, and I rode our bikes together for the rest of the day.Comments
