Stars Are Part of Heaven Too, You Know Part 9

Romance Created on 4-29-08 Views(16) Story Rating G

James opened the car door for Anna and slammed it shut behind her. He walked around to get in the driver’s side and Anna couldn’t help but admire him in the moonlight. It was cloudy and they could hear thunder in the background, but the little moonlight that shined fell down on him and to Anna it was just perfect. She couldn’t believe James was almost hers.

He opened the door and slid in quickly, shutting the door behind him. "It looks like it’s about to rain," he pointed out the obvious. "You still wanna go to the lake?"

She shook her head. "Yeah. I don’t mind if you don’t."

He nodded and started the car. She shivered and his eyes flickered to her. He turned up the heat and sat back. They pulled out of the student parking lot quickly and Anna sat back to listen to the radio. He even listened to the same stuff she did; country and a little bit of rock or pop.

"Music okay with you?" he asked as she sighed.

"Yeah. It’s the same stuff I listen to," she told him as Dierks Bentley’s "Come a Little Closer" started to play. He didn’t respond, just took one hand off the wheel and placed it by his leg. She reached across and took it.

He glanced her way and smiled. "And here I was thinking this was gonna be hard for me."

"What does that mean?" she asked him, confused.

"Well, I figured it would be hard to do what I wanted to. You know, I thought you would mind," he told her, looking slightly embarrassed.

"James Lewis! I can’t believe you! You’re finally letting me see some emotion from you! I haven’t seen you look embarrassed before in my life!" she teased. His tension was relieved immediately and he smirked her favorite smile.

"You have no idea what that look does to me," she sighed and looked ahead. His grin only widened.

Suddenly, she burst out in uncontrollable laughter and James was startled. "What?" he asked confusion clear on his face.

"I just…" she stopped to take a breath. "I just realized that I’m your first girlfriend, aren’t I?"

In the moonlight, she saw his change in posture. He was even more embarrassed now. How much worse more could she do before he exploded? "OK, yeah, you are. And I know it’s pathetic. I’m in eleventh grade and have never had a girlfriend before. How much more geeky could you get?"

"I don’t know. I don’t think you can," she teased and he instantly came back to the James she was used to for the second time tonight.

"I don’t know. I don’t think you can," he mocked her, deepening his voice, making her sound stupid even to herself.

"You’ve been doing that since sixth grade. Don’t you think it’s a little old?" she asked him.

"Nope," he smiled.

They were almost there now and he rubbed his thumb gently over the top of her hand as they drove toward the lake. She noticed the slight roughness of his hands, telling her that he wasn’t afraid to do a little work. Despite his slightly-calloused hand, Anna couldn’t think of a better feeling in the world.

He pulled the car up into a parking space, and they sat there for a moment, looking out towards the lake together. It was a huge lake, the trees on the other side looked like pencils standing up in the distance. The clouds and half covered moon glittered off it, a perfect reflection and Anna thought to herself, Even the lake seems romantic tonight despite the clouds.

It reminded her of a beach more than a lake, as it had sand and a "tide". The water was constantly lapping up about a foot every few seconds. She and Katie had fantasized in middle school of having the perfect first kiss under the moonlight here. In both of their cases, it hadn’t happened.

James looked at her and let go of her hand. He opened the door and stepped out. Anna just sat there, knowing he would come around for her soon. And he did, opening her door and offering his hand to her. "How ‘bout you take a walk with me?" he asked.

She smiled and took his outstretched hand in hers and stepped out of the car. "I would like that."

He shut the door behind her and smiled. She knew in the back of her mind that she should be heading home, but at the moment her parents rage didn’t faze her at all. "Great," he said.

They walked out onto the sandy beach and Anna bent to take off her sandals. James watched her, unable to take his eyes off her. She straightened up and for the first time tonight remembered that they were dressed up. How would it look to a passing person if he or she saw two teenagers dressed up in the middle of the night?

She dismissed the thought almost as quickly as it occurred. Who cared? She had her one true love and that was all that mattered to her right then.

He took her hand again they walked towards the water. She was on the right, facing the lake, so she walked in the gently lapping water. He watched her bare feet make tracks in the sand and sighed contentedly. She smiled up at him. The top of her head came only to his collarbone, unlike Richard. He was actually an inch or two shorter, and it annoyed her sometimes. It was a pleasant change.

They walked in silence, lost in the moment, for a while. Finally, only when James’s car was about fifteen minutes behind them, did they stop. They turned to face each other as thunder sounded loudly, more closely than before. The storm was almost on them.

She took his other hand in hers and placed her head on his chest. He rested his chin on her head and breathed in deeply. She smiled into his tie. He smelled so good to her.

The thunder rang out again and this time a bolt of lightening illuminated the dark world. She hadn’t noticed that they could barely see each other in the darkness. The moon had disappeared completely.

"Wow," he said as they watched the lightening streak across the sky. "I guess we better get moving before we’re killed by lightening."

"Yeah, that might be smart," her muffled reply came back; her face was still pressed into his shirt and tie.

He let go of her hands and lifted her chin up so he could look her in the eyes. They just stood there as the rain finally broke down on them in sheets. They let it pour down on them for a moment then James said, "You make me go out of my way, crossing the line, making me see what I think should be everyday. You have no idea what you make me do and it’s just not fair."

Though his voice had his usual edge to it when he was teasing her, his eyes were dead serious and she didn’t doubt it one bit. He had the same effect on her. And she told him so.

Finally though they seemed to come back to earth and realized that both of them were soaked through and began to laugh. Taking each other’s hand, they ran along the lakeshore back to his car. As they ran, they laughed and spun around in the rain and in the lake water, Anna feeling more alive than she ever had. It was a feeling she would always hold onto no matter what.

Just before they reached his car, she bent to get her sandals but didn’t take the time to put them on. A thought then entered her mind. James had run through the water with her and his shoes would be soaked. She didn’t know why she thought of such a trivial thing. It made her realize just how weird this all was. She and James! If anyone had told her five years ago that she would be running through the rain with him she would have laughed.

He stood waiting beside her as lightening flashed again, allowing them a precious look at each other. She smiled up at him, even though she knew he couldn’t see it. They turned together and made for her side of the car.
