Stars Are Part of Heaven Too, You Know Part 4
|
A piercing sound filled Anna’s ears the next morning. She groaned and rolled over to cut off the alarm clock. Afterwards she just lay their, thinking about yesterday. James had gone home shortly afterward and Anna had had Richard take her home as well. Briana had hooked up with a cute guy from her fourth period class named Cory and Katie and Brandon had had their first kiss as well. Yesterday seemed to be the odd day. Unexpected things happened every few minutes. It seemed, however, her whole James fling hadn’t been a one day thing. Her stomach lurched as she realized she had gym with him today. She sat up and slid off her bed reluctantly. Walking over to her closet, she chose an outfit that bared similar resemblance to one James had. Her friends all teased her and hated the shirt and pants.Anna walked out of her room and into the bathroom. She took extra long on her shower that morning, thinking of ways to rebuild her wall and let Richard back in. After wasting a considerable amount of water and still having no ideas on what to do, she got out and pulled her clothes on. She put her hair up in her usual ponytail and came out of the bathroom. Walking into the kitchen, she saw a note there with her name on it. She picked it up and read it. Anna,James called earlier. He needs toask you a question about mathhomework. He wants to meet you atthe cafeteria at breakfast. Love,Mom Anna scoffed at the paper. Math homework her foot! James could probably care less about math homework. The real question was what he really wanted. Anna considered not showing up, but the thought of seeing him was too much. She stuck the note in her back pocket and grabbed her book bag. ******** Anna and Richard stepped out of his car and flung their backpacks over their shoulders. Richard walked around to her side and reached for her hand. She let him take it in his and they walked up to the front lawn of the school. As they ascended the stairs closest to the cafeteria, Anna saw James pull up in his navy car. She sucked in a breath and looked straight ahead. Richard glanced at her, but didn’t say anything. They entered the school’s cafeteria and walked to the breakfast line. “Hey Anna!” someone called. It was Briana, standing next to Cory in the front of the line. Anna held up a hand and turned to Richard. “I gotta meet James here. You can go on to class. I’ll see you there,” she told him. “Oh, okay. What do you have to do with James?” he asked her.“He called this morning and my mom left a message saying he wanted to talk about math homework,” she told him. A look flashed across Richard’s face. “Yeah, James really needs help with math. He’s got a B in it already,” he said roughly. “Chill Richard. He’s your teammate and you should trust him,” Anna attempted to soothe him. They reached the breakfast food and grabbed a bag. Richard paid for both of theirs and kissed her gently on the cheek in the lobby. “See you in a few minutes,” he breathed in her ear. She could barley force a smile. James had appeared around the corner. “Bye,” was her only reply. “So what do you really want?” she asked James as he approached her.“What do you mean? I said I needed help with homework,” he said innocently. “Yeah. And we both know that’s not the truth. So what do you want Germ?” she said, pretending to be impatient.“Aww, does someone wanna catch up with their boyfriend?” he said in mocking way.“Actually yes I do. He’s a lot more fun to be around so hurry up with whatever it is you’re gonna say.”“Oh it’s nothing. Never mind. I just wanted to know if Richard is coming to practice today. Coach told me to ask if everyone would be there,” he said absently. “Of course he is. Why wouldn’t he?” she asked.“I dunno. Just following orders,” he said. “See ya in gym Loser.” He walked away and Anna rolled her eyes. Why would he have called me instead of Richard or tell me instead of Richard? He was right here a minute ago. And why lie to my mom? she wondered in her head. She pondered the fact the whole way to her locker and to language class. It wasn’t until Mr. Roberts called role that she finally stopped worrying about James Lewis and his mysterious ways. ******** Anna walked into the cafeteria and found Richard already sitting with Briana, Cory, Katie, Brandon, and Emily, another close friend of theirs. She took her usual seat next to Richard at the end of the table and joined in with the conversation.“So I just don’t get how I could have gotten a D on the report!” Katie was telling them.“I don’t know either, Katie. I thought it was a good summary of the book,” Emily said. “Oh hey Anna.”Anna nodded and said, “What book report?” The usual lunchtime talk started up and for a while Anna forgot all about James. It wasn’t hard when you had two bad-minded friends and another one trying to get them to shut up constantly. All the guys had started talking about this hot new girl that had come from Texas and Anna would occasionally glare at Richard for some comment he made. It wasn’t until she saw James come in did she stop talking altogether. Her heart leapt as he motioned for her to come over. She stood a little too quickly and Katie noticed. “Gee Anna. You sure seem to be in a hurry lately to be around James,” she commented. Anna glared at her and said, “Yeah, well, he needs help with stuff you know! And it’s funny to see how dumb he is!” she snapped back. She turned on her heel and headed to where James was standing in the lunch line.“Well, you made me get up, what do what Germ?” she said, easily faking a disgusted voice. She glared at him, trying to take in all of him she could.“Come on. Get lunch with me,” he told her.“I’m not hungry thanks.”“Fine, suit yourself. I was just trying to be nice.”“Yeah, it’s a real effort for you, isn’t it?” she sneered.“The hardest,” he said in a serious tone. “So will you at least let me sit with you guys today? I wanna talk to Richard.”She couldn’t believe her luck. She almost blew her cover as she responded, “Of course! I mean, you are Richard’s teammate. But that’s the only reason. Now can I get away from you before I catch the flu?”“Whatever. See ya in a minute. Tell Richard we need to talk. Without everyone knowing about what please.” She rolled her eyes and stalked off to the table, heart beating irregularly. As she slid into her seat, everyone watched her, obviously waiting for her to explain what the star baseball player had wanted. “What? He just wanted to tell me that he wants to sit here today. To talk to you actually, Richard. He didn’t say about what. Just without anyone else listening in.”“Gross, I don’t want him at our table. People might get the wrong idea,” Katie said, disgusted. Anna shook her head in mock desperation. “Oh Katie, what will I ever do with you?” she asked, kidding. They all smiled and Emily said, “Here comes your worse nightmare, Anna. Better get her outta her Briana, Katie, before she attacks him.” Anna smirked as she thought, Yeah, only to do something entirely different from what you guys are thinking.James reached the table and Brandon moved down so he could sit across from Richard. “James,” Richard acknowledged. “What do you need?” James leaned forward and said something inaudible. Richard pulled back slightly and gave him a confused look. The rest of them traded looks and began the regular table talk again. Anna, however, was paying no attention to Katie, Cory, Brandon, Briana, or Emily. Though her gaze fell on Katie, who was talking about the report she’d gotten a D on again, she was concentrating on James’s low voice. As soon as she heard the words “assistant coach” and the phrase “might need help from one of us” she knew the talk was about baseball and turned back to her friends.“Do you guys wanna go shop for dresses this afternoon for the dance tomorrow?” Katie asked as Anna focused on them again. Tomorrow was the Friday dance her school had once every month. Briana and Emily nodded and turned to Anna. “You wanna go?” they asked together.“Um, yeah, sure whatever. Sounds good to me. When are we going?” she responded distantly. They looked at her with worried looks. “What?” Anna asked, annoyed she couldn’t hide her feelings.“Nothing. Uh, how about four. That’ll give us enough time to tell our parents where we’ll be and drop off our stuff,” Emily suggested. Everyone agreed and a few minutes later James and Richard had stopped their conversation and the bell rang for the last two periods of the day to begin. She sucked in a breath. Gym was next on her schedule.James stood up and walked up to her. “So, you ready for gym?” he asked her, a teasing tone telling her he was in a good mood. “Of course. I’m always ready to see you fall on your face!” she replied and walked quickly to the girl’s locker room. She heard him scoff behind her and her mouth curled into a smile. She and Katie had regular gym class together and Katie was waiting for her in the locker room. They got dressed quickly and jogged into the gym. James had beaten them, and Anna sighed heavily. They had circuit training today. She hated circuit training so much because it was the one thing James had always beaten her at. She stole a glance his way and sure enough, there he was, a satisfied look appearing on his features.Anna sighed again and Katie grinned. “Yeah, your torture is today isn’t it?” she asked, clearly enjoying watching her suffer from the thought of having to jumping jacks, wall push-ups, and sit ups for the next hour and a half. Their gym teacher called them over and class began.
