Stars Are Part of Heaven Too, You Know Part 2

She opened the door and was greeted by the smell of fresh baked cookies.  “Hey Anna.  Want a cookie?” her mom, Lisa, asked her.  This was just what she needed to get her mind off of things.  Hot, fresh baked cookies.  She walked up to her mom and took a cookie.  “So how was the game?” her mom asked.  “It was fine.  We didn’t win though.  James hit a triple and was in position to score but then Richard struck out.  We tied with two,” she told her mom.  “Oh, that’s great.  I’m sure Richard is beating himself up for that.  I know how seriously he takes the game,” she said in reply.  “Yeah, but then James told me to tell him it was cool.  I think it helped a bit.”  “That was really nice of him.  James is a good kid.  His father was never one to hold grudges either,” Lisa said.  Anna said nothing more.  The last thing she needed to hear was all the great things about James Lewis when that was exactly what she was trying to forget.  She ate one more cookie and retreated to her room.  She flopped down on her bed and sighed.  When she first came into sixth grade and met James Lewis, they had immediately started a rivalry.  At first that was all it was.  A friendly rivalry between two acquaintances.   But as the year wore on, towards the end of the school year, Anna began to realize her feelings ran stronger for him than that.  Though she had never told her best friends Katie and Emily about this, they, along with other friends of hers said he was flirting with her.  She refused to believe it until she thought about it hard.  But still she denied it though her heart was pleading it to be true.  Eventually it died and by seventh grade she had stoned her heart completely against James.  They were nothing more than pure rivals.  It seemed that James too had changed the way he acted around her, though for what reason she was unsure.  Now, after years of keeping herself as distanced from him as possible, it seemed that the wall she had built had crumbled.  Rolling over, she grabbed the phone by her bed and dialed Richard’s number.  It rang twice and then his fourteen year old sister picked up.  “Hello,” Trisha said.  “Hey, Trish.  Is Richard there?  I really need to talk to him.”  “Yeah, hold on Anna.”  Anna waited for a moment then heard Richard’s voice.  “Anna?  What’s up?  I just left you.  Are you okay?” he asked, confused. “Yeah, I’m fine.  I just wondered if you could come back over.  I need to do something or I’ll go crazy.  Maybe we can go to the creek?” she suggested.Richard chuckled and said “I guess so.  I got nothing to do either.  I’ll be there in a minute.  See ya.”“Okay but wait a minute.  Can you invite James?” it was out of her mouth before she could stop it.“Um, sure.  But may I ask why?” Richard said suspiciously.Anna couldn’t blame him for being suspicious.  She had just asked him to invite a teammate he rarely associated with and one she herself claimed to hate.  “Yeah.  He just never has been before I don’t think.  Everyone else was talking about going after the game and I just thought maybe he could come, too.”“Oh.  Okay, I’ll call him now.  See ya in a few minutes,” he responded, relief clear in his voice. They hung up and Anna rolled off the bed.  Standing, she straightened her shirt and walked out of the room, not believing what she had just done. “Where are you going?” her dad, David, asked.  “I going down to the creek with Richard and James and the other kids from school will probably be there too,” she told him.“You said James was going?  I thought you didn’t like him,” he said, just as suspicious as Richard had been.  “Yeah, I was trying to be considerate.  He’s never been and I thought he might like to go.”“Well, if he’s there I guess you can go,” her dad said reluctantly.  He had never tried to hide the fact that he would rather have her date James Lewis over Richard Kelley.  Anna sighed and went to get a towel. ******** Twenty minutes later, Richard pulled up in the driveway.  She ran out to meet him.  Slamming the car door, she said “So where’s James?”  “He said he’d be there soon.  Took me forever to get him to come.  He’s bringing Nick.” Richard said.  Nick was James’s best friend.  She shouldn’t have been surprised to hear that he was coming too.  They arrived at the bridge where all their other classmates were seated under, either drinking sodas or talking.  Many of them were in bathing suits.  They got out and several kids yelled to hi to them.  They acknowledged the greetings and went to sit next to Katie and her boyfriend Brandon.  Brandon was a senior and Katie had been with him since she was in seventh grade.“Hey guys,” Anna said as she spread out the towel she’d brought.“Hey!” they both replied.  Anna sat down on the towel and so did Richard.  The creek was only a few feet away and the other side was surrounded by trees.  One limb had a rope swing suspended from it.  The bridge had huge rocks under it and that was where most kids sat and watched the swimming games and chatted.  The water under the bridge where everyone swam was over ten feet deep according to a pole sitting in the water.“The water’s great today,” Katie said.  She herself was in a bathing suit.  As was Brandon.  “Really?  Maybe I’ll get in.  I brought a bathing suit.  I just haven’t put it on yet,” Anna replied. Brandon and Richard had started up a conversation about the baseball game so Katie and Anna were free to do whatever.  They saw one of their friends, Briana, sitting a rock under the bridge and went over to her.  “Hey Briana.  Were you at the game?” Katie asked her.  Sports were a big thing at Cedar High.“Yeah, I was.  Close one.  Too bad James didn’t get a homerun, huh Anna?” she asked.  The question was asked because normally Anna would’ve made some smart comment about James.  But today her attention was elsewhere than on their conversation.  James had just stepped out of his car with Nick. She couldn’t help but notice how he moved with such confidence.  The same way she had watched him in sixth grade.  “Um, Anna, why exactly is James here with Nick?” Briana asked her.She shook herself.  She could not be caught watching James.  Once again the thought entered her head How did this happen so fast!?  “Uh, yeah, I invited him.  I don’t know why.  It was a moment of weakness,” Anna said, easily covering herself.  She had grown used to it over the years.  “I’ll say.  Why the heck did ya do that?  You hate each other, remember?” Katie said.“Yeah.  I don’t know what came over me.  It’s just he’s never been here before-” she was interrupted by Briana who said “Yes he has.  He comes here all the time.  You’re just luckily never here.”Anna felt the tips of her ears redden and grow hot.  “I, uh, well how was I supposed to know?” she eventually stuttered out.Katie and Briana looked at her with a mixture of confusion and disbelief.  “There is no way you haven’t been here when he was.  In fact, I know you have cause you beat him in a swimming race once,” Katie said.Just then, Brandon came up and said “Hey guys, they’re getting ready to put on some music.  If you wanna dance you better come on.”Katie jumped up immediately at the word dance.  Briana got up slower and stretched.  “You coming?” she asked Anna.“Naw, I’m good.  I’ll just sit here and watch you attempt to get a partner,” she teased.  “Ha ha, very funny,” Briana said sarcastically.  “Well have fun with James!” she said, thinking she was annoying Anna.“Oh, I will,” Anna said in the usual way she pretended to like James when the time was necessary.  Briana shook her head in mock disbelief and left Anna on the rocks alone.  Everyone in the water was playing a game of Marco Polo, which Anna did not find to be temping in the least.  So she just sat their staring into the trees on the other side of the creek.  “Well, what do we have here?  Anna Matthews sitting all alone.  What a shock!” someone said behind her.
