The alarm went off at six in the morning just like it always did, but it was more of a reminder of when to get out of bed then a wake up call. Sophie however was not in her bed this rainy October morning, instead she was outside on the porch waiting for the storm inside the house to stop raging.
"Joe, God so help me, if you stick your finger in my face one more time it's going to be chopped off!" Marianne, Sophies mother, screamed at her husband.
"Well Marianne, I'd just like to know where you were half the night again, instead of being at home and taking care of your wifely duties-"
Sophie stepped off the porch and onto the water logged grass of her front yard. She had no desire to listen to her parents argument for the billionth morning in a row. It was ancient old, and as far back as Sophie could remember, it replayed always the same. Her mother refused to admit that she was a prostitute, and her father kept pushing her just so he could say in his drunken manner 'I told you so.'
It made no sense to Sophie why her mother even bothered coming home at all; when she was home all she did was sleep anyways, and argue with her dad. Sophie was the one who her little brother thought of as a mother, for she was the one who cooked his food, and washed his clothes. For christs' sake, she even tucked him into bed at night.
In her minds eye, Sophie looked at Shanes sweet little face, he was only four and the closest companion that she had. It was a good thing that Sophie had set up another sleep-over for him at his friend Kirk's house; there was only so much arguing that a kid should hear.
"Ha," Sophie laughed aloud bitterly. There was only so much arguing that a seventeen-year old could take too. Looking up into the cloudy skies, she let the rain soak her through. Taking a deep breath, she then closed her eyes and wished that she could become completely numb and not feel the pain that was locked away in her heart.
Sighing, Sophie trudged back across the lawn and grabbed her backpack off the porch, so that she could head to school. As she slung it over her shoulder, she could still hear her mother shrieking like a banshee, and her fathers slured words as he attempted to end the conversation the only way he knew how, by drinking himself into oblivion.
As she walked to school, which convienently down the street, Sophie knew that she wouldn't have to worry about skipping second period so that she could take Shane to pre-school. She knew that Kirk's parents would take care of that. What she did have to worry about was the fact that her homework was crunkled up and smelled of the stale beer her dad had spilled on it last night when he had gotten drunk and then passed out. Again.
Being so caught up in her thoughts, Sophie hadn't noticed the car that pulled up next to her until she heard a sickly sweet voice say, "Oh look guys, a water rat that leaned to walk on two feet, let's help it return to its natural position," and then suddenly found herself sprawled flat on her butt watching manicured hands retreat into the backseat window of a mercedes as it sped away.
"Bitches," Sophie muttered as she huffed out a breath, and stood up off the wet ground, only to fall flat on her butt again as a second voice rang out through the rain.
"I sure hope tha comment wasn't meant for me," the voice said from behind her, amusement tinkling in.
