  I looked out of the window, not noticing the tears rolling down my cheeks.  I knew that these memories had to come back to me, in order for me to go on with my life, but it was just so hard.  I had never told anyone about that night other then the councelor, even when I had been summoned in court, which is another day I will surely never forget, especially after re-reading it in my old diary....

   I looked up from my clasped hands, and looked directly at the lawyer in front of me, determined not to move my gaze to the man I call father sitting at a table to the right of me.  The lawyer was a man with sharp narrowed eyes, and he reminded me kind of like a hawk who was after its pray.  I struggled to remember his name... it must have been Mr. Larry or something, because I know his name started with an L.
   "Mellie," he said, "I'm going to ask you some questions, and you are going to have to answer them as truthfully as you can, ok?"
   "Sure," I mumbled into the dead silent room.  The lawyer had said that I was going to be all right in the court room as long as I held to the truth, but it was still unnerving to have the jury staring directly at me, and me knowing that they were judging me, even though they were never connected to the situation.  I glanced back down at my clasped hands.
   "Look at me Mellie, now, has your father ever hit you before?"
   "Yes," I looked up at him, and tears were starting to glisten in my eyes.
   "How Mellie?"
   "He... he.... he'd punch me, and kick me until I was bleeding,... then he would pick me up and pull me legs so far apart that I was doing opposite splits."
   "Has he ever hit you with an object?"
   "Yes,.." I looked past the lawyers head, and stared at the wall, "he used to take his bat and smack my legs with it when I was bad.. he'd tie me up and whip me with his built, until I had no skin left on my... back."  I was silently crying.
   "Mellie, it's okay, I know this is hard, but I need to ask some more questions, would you like some water," he asked, and I shook my head no, and he looked directly into my eyes, "Did he ever touch you?"
   I broke eye contact with him and looked down at my now white hands.
   "Come on, it's okay, but I need to know."
   I was starting to make little choking noises in the back of my throat as my crying started turning into sobbing.  Slowly, I started rocking back and forth.
  "Mellie, come on, look at me, this is your only chance to tell and have it count.  Look at me Mellie, look at me." He urged forcefully.
   I gradually brought my head up, but instead of looking at the lawyer I looked over at my so called father and said with dead clarity, "Yes, he did."
   And with that, I fainted into my seat.
