Chapter 2: True BeginningsMikey’s Point of View

The clouds have been holding out all week, Gerard says soon they’ll all break and rain early tears for September 11th’s first birthday. I wonder if he’ll ever get over what he saw that day.

Remembering my mission I took my eyes off the skies and continued scanning the shops on either side of the street. I’d heard of a really good music store somewhere this side of Newark. Jersey Sounds or something like that.

Just as I saw it, across the busy streets, someone tapped me on the back, I spun around and found a teenage girl staring up at me.

“Aren’t you the My Chemical Romance bassist? You played at my friends birthday party in June right?” she asked.

“Yeah, I’m Mikey,” I hold my hand out to her and she shakes it enthusiastically.

“Well I just wanted to say I think your amazing, my names Avery by the way,” she smiles.

“Nice to meet you Avery,” her smile widens before she walks away and I cross the street to Jersey Sounds.

The store blew me away, it had everything! All I needed was strings but suddenly I wanted all of it!

“Hello, can I help you find anything?” a woman’s voice asks. I look up and am confronted by the most beautiful, breathtaking eyes and my heart stops, for a long time.

 Rhapsody’s Point of View

So I guy who looks about my age just walked in and started looking around. I did my business act until he turned around and I saw his face. Could this possibly be an angel?

Those eyes held some deep knowledge that I was instantly dying to unlock no matter what the consequences. Was my heart still beating? Who is this guy?

 Mikey’s Point of View

Those huge, deep blue, almost black eyes with gold shining in them were inescapable. I couldn’t look away. The black hair, full lips, perfectly porcelain skin, gold heart shaped locket and Killers t-shirt just enhanced her indescribable beauty. It literally took my breath away.

She crouched down to my level on the floor and I didn’t even notice it was raining hard enough to shake the store until there was a huge blinding flash of lightning and she screamed and curled into a ball in a second. I wanted to hold her and keep her safe.

She uncurled and looked back up at me, “I’m sorry, it just reminded me of… something.” She held her hand out, “my name is Rhapsody, what’s yours?” Her voice is like a song.

I shake her perfectly shaped hands, not wanting to let go, and marvel at her name, matching her beautiful features. “Mikey of My Chemical Romance.”

Why did I feel the need to impress her? Like she even knows what My Chemical Romance is, how stupid am I?!

“My Chemical Romance? I think I’ve heard of you, there’s a CD in the next room with that name on it. Bring me your Bullets Bring me your Love or something like that?”

“I brought you my Bullets you Brought me your Love,” why was I correcting her? I sound so stupid!

“Oh, right, sorry, I haven’t gotten a chance to listen to some of the new stuff lately; things have been pretty busy around here. Not that you can tell now but it’s usually packed,” she gestures around the empty room.

We’re all alone in here? Am I staring? Should I look away? Blink? Speak?

“Anyway, can I help you with anything? We just got some amazing electric guitars- different colors and stuff,” she points to a wall of about 50 different kinds and styles of guitars.

“No I- I just came for some strings for my bass.”

“Right, next aisle over-these are acoustic strings,” she smiles and gets up off the floor with me.

“Of course,” she follows me into the aisle with bass strings and there they were- I wish Frank were here!

 Rhapsody’s Point of View

Okay so this angel plays bass in a famous band? He is so amazing how on earth did he end up here? He says he just came for some strings so I showed him where they are. He walked down the aisle and instantly spotted the glow in the dark guitar strings and went crazy.

“Oh my God they make these?! That is so amazing!” He picks them up and stares at the box happily.

“There are bass ones if you want them,” I smile at his enthusiasm, he was acting just like a little kid!

“No, I wanna get these for Frank,” he smiles at the package. For the first time since he stepped in I pulled my eyes away from his face and noticed his Iron Maiden shirt and black converse. Gorgeous.

He says his name is Mikey.

…Mikey…

 3rd Person

Rhapsody went behind the counter to check Mikey out. He ended up with not only guitar strings for him and Frank but a Sweet Home Alabama guitar book, light up drumsticks, an autographed Anthrax poster and some lime green picks.

He grinned mischievously every time he looked at the guitar book.

When Mikey turned to go, hardly daring to believe he was leaving this girl behind him, all he saw was a wall of white.

Thunder and lightning hit again at the same time and Rhapsody repeated her scream from before.

“You can stay here until the storm lets up, there’s no way I’m letting you out there in that. It’s worse than the dirty Jersey streets at night.”

“Okay…”

 Mikey’s Point of View

She led me over to the steps by the counter that she said leads up to her apartment above the store and sat down next to me.

“I have an idea,” Rhapsody suddenly exclaims, God if it makes her happy I’ll do it.

“What’s that?”

“How about we learn more about each other. You can go first, guess what you think you know about me, then I’ll guess for you okay?”

“Um, okay…guess?” What could I say about this girl, I don’t know her at all. “You look about 20, single, in a band-probably rock or heavy metal. You love the Killers and old fashioned Moody Blues-” She smacks my arm playfully and gasps.

“You did not just call my beloved Moody Blues old fashioned! I love them almost as much as I love Elvis, do you think he’s old fashioned?”

I laugh, “yes!”

“You may like Iron Maiden like me but don’t even come near me with insults about the Moody Blues, you know nothing about them!” She flashes a beautiful smile my way, “anyway, continue.”

“Okay, you grew up in New Jersey-” she smirks and I stop. “Oh you didn’t? Where then?”

“Pennsylvania, I moved here to do music after I graduated from high school. But you were right about me being in a band.”

“Does that entitle me to a free fact?” What am I getting myself into? I still don’t know this girl but it was so easy to talk to her. Oh God I wish did.

“Okay, my last name is Mildew, good enough?” Good, she took it as a joke.

“So you’re 19 and your not in college? Did you ever have a college career or is this it?”

 Rhapsody’s Point of View

Do I dare tell him about that? Pour my educational reasons out to him like I’ve known him for years. Not even Nate knew why I didn’t do college. But I couldn’t hold myself back, no way could I help myself he is just to perfect.

“I learned too much in high school, at home and in classrooms,” I begin hesitantly, unsure if I should continue or what to tell him.

“You dropped out?” he sounds curious, not accusatory so I decide to continue.

“No, things happened in grade school and when I was 13 I went to live with my uncle. High school challenged me, I learned some things about this world that scarred me deeply so I went the music way and decided I wouldn’t need college.” Maybe that was too much. Way too much.

“I dropped out of college for My Chemical Romance,” he admits.

“It’s not that I’m stupid, I was valedictorian, a straight A student but I had no passion for it. School was my façade, my mask to the world that I never took off.” I just felt the need to explain myself.

Woah Rhaps, enough. Stop now before you regret telling this beautiful stranger your secrets. No more, stop talking.

After a while Mikey looked up at me from his hands where he’d been staring deep in thought and smile, “your turn.”

 Mikey’s Point of View

Wow, she must trust me to reveal so much about herself. What happened to her when she was a child? I guess she doesn’t want to talk about it. Maybe I should just pretend she didn’t tell me anything and move on. I was probably making her really uncomfortable being quiet so long. I look at her and smile to lighten things up, “you turn.”

She smiles and sighs, “okay here goes. About 20 maybe, bassist on his way to supreme stardom, crazy past straight from New Jersey, in love with music, um, single…and…oh yeah, lover of Anthrax and Moody Blues killer,” she smiles with satisfaction.

“Okay, the Moody Blues are great, just old okay?” I laugh, she sticks her tongue out.

“Whatever.”

“I’ll be 22 in a couple months, not sure about the stardom thing, boring Jersey past, crazy in love with music and Anthrax and single since life began.”

“Oh wow I did such a better job than you, but you can’t be serious, you’ve never had a girlfriend?!” is she excited or just teasing me?

“Well I went to a high school dance with a girl once and a party with a chic I haven’t spoken to since or before for that matter. But it’s not really the same.” Shit.

“Well what is the same? The same as what?”

Unfamiliar territory, warning: get out now or die of embarrassment.

 Rhapsody’s Point of View

God can you get any redder than that? His face is the crimson color of blood. But should I really be flirting like this to a complete stranger. I’d scarcely even touched a guy since my dad, not even Nate, and I never told him why either.

 3rd Person

Mikey gasped for a while then finally answered, “Just…not… like-not like the right person, not a girlfriend, not real true love.

“How do you know when she’s the right one?”

She’s making this so difficult! Why do girls have to do this to poor misunderstanding men!? Mikey thought.

“How would you know?” he turns the question back on her.

“I can’t tell you that, it’s too personal!” Rhapsody laughed.

“Whatever, I’m not telling you unless you tell me, like in Kindergarten,” Mikey smiles victoriously.

“What do you mean in Kindergarten? What’s that have to do with a deal?” She sounds genuinely confused, which confuses Mikey enough to cause him to blindly press on.

“Didn’t you ever make deals like that with your friends when you were little? It’s how my brother got all my secrets out of me,” he explains.

“Oh, I didn’t have friends, kids were kinda scared of my family and I didn’t want them anyway.”

The remark is met with silence.
