Mr.Jacobs sat on the porch and talked to Sam while Jane and I cleaned up in the kitchen. Though she hadn't told him about Brooke being here, I knew he would find out soon enough. And with Sam thinking I had already informed him, I wasn't sure if he would let it slip in a moment's time.
"You okay?"Jane took back the plate that she was handing to me to dry. Her eyes lingered on my fingers, which were shaking."Are you still sick?"she raised her brow.
"No."I swallowed. My mouth was completely dry. I had definitely made a big mess of things...again."I mean yes I'm okay and no I'm not still sick."I lied.
Wow. I hadn't really thought about how much I had started to fade into my old lifestyle. Even though I wasn't a good liar, I was starting to let the lies roll off of my tongue like nothing.
"I'll tell him. I think you and Sam should go into town."she set the plate down and walked over to the refridgerator, grabbing a note."You two can pick up some things that I need."
I didn't argue with her. In fact, I didn't want to. The only thing that kept running through my head was telling the truth to Sam. A mental picture was playing through my head. I could see Sam becoming angry and yelling at me. At the end of it all, I could see Brooke laughing at me from afar.
Getting Sam to go with me wasn't hard at all. Though I told him we had to pick up some things, I knew he caught the jist of my vacant stare. It was the stare I gave when I was scared to death.
Mr.Jacobs waved us off as we were driving out of the driveway. Sam remained quiet, while breathing steadily. I knew he was waiting for an explanation. I kept trying to find the words to begin my sentence but no words would come out. It seemed like the air was leaving my lungs and not returning.
"Becca."Sam's voice echoed in my head. I turned to see him staring at me. The car was in park and I hadn't realized we had already made it into town."Are you ready?"
Okay, maybe he didn't exactly catch the drift. Or maybe he was just giving me time to talk.
"Becca."he said again.
I coughed."Sorry. I had something in my throat."I smiled and watched him give me a weird grin."Sam, wait."I placed my hand on his arm to keep him from getting out. The look on his face wasn't suspicious but observant."We have to talk...."
When I told Sam that I had lied, he smiled weakly. In turn, I felt even worse. He must think I would be like this forever. And, I wasn't even sure of that myself. Being a bad liar was starting to wear off of me. Maybe I was getting good at it. That was somehow smart in a stupid way.
"So...?"I waited for him to respond.
"So you told me the truth."he replied."I know I'm not the easiest person to tell things to. So, I think everything will work out on it's own.....as long as you stop lying. You are starting to improve on it and that isn't a good thing."
"O....kay."I stared at him in confusion."Um, will you be replacing your brother?"I joked at his encouragement.
We had a good time running all over the store, searching for everything on Jane's list. I wasn't even sure we were getting the right things because we were goofing around so much. Who knew going to the store would be so much fun?
"Okay, all we need now is...."Sam looked over the list until his eyes rested on the last item. His mouth slightly parted and his eyes widened.
"What's wrong?"I asked. I followed his finger to the last thing on the list."WHAT?"
"W-w-w-w.."Sam was completely stunned. And even though I wasn't as bad as him, I could've easily fainted. Jane had somehow figured I needed to buy a pregnancy test.
Jane seemed like a psychic now. Then again, she was a mother and a mother usually knew her child.....a mother that was actually a mother that is. Neglecting to use a condom was the most ignorant thing in the world. Now that I wasn't caught up in lovey dovey stuff, I actually realized the mistake we had made. I wanted to cry so bad but I knew this wasn't the place or time to do so.
I knew nothing about pregnancy tests and neither did Sam. Both of us were fidgeting while we glanced at each box, contemplating which one would be the best. I became embarassed as people glanced in our direction as they passed so I grabbed a random box off of the shelf and held it under my arm, that way no one could see.
"Maybe we should go to the last aisle."Sam suggested. We had nearly reached the counter when I looked up to see Amber. I gasped as she looked up and then back down at the box in my hands. The grin that flickered on her face was evil. Being that she worked at the store, she must be quite familiar with the products."Too late."he whispered.
"Hi guys."Amber's high pitch voice rang."I can check you out here."
"Okay."I smiled fakely. Even though I hated her, I couldn't bear to stand and wait with the test in my hands. She waited eagerly as we placed the items on the counter. I could tell she was looking forward to me placing the box down. So when I did, I got the reaction I was expecting.
"Wow."she laughed."Please tell me this isn't for you."
"What's it to you?"Sam said rudely.
"Sam, that's disgusting. She's a child for Pete's sake."she answered back. Her amusement left her face as she stared into Sam's eyes."Whatever."she scanned the box and threw it in the bag."That will be fifty-two, ninety eight."Sam handed her the money grabbed the bags. I reached for the change, only to have Amber's hand linger for a moment."Don't think this won't get around."she smiled and handed me the change.
"I wouldn't expect anything else from you."I assured her. As I was leaving, I "accidentally" knocked over the pile of toilet paper that was being advertised on her counter. I laughed and continued out to the car.
"That wasn't very nice."Sam smiled as we pulled up to the house. I couldn't help but tell him what I did to Amber. The only thing that bothered me was that he barely realized what I had told him ten minutes ago. Sam was obviously afraid.
"I'm sure I would've if I stayed longer."I replied. My voice was shaky. Reaching into the back in one of the bags, I pulled out the test and placed it down the front of my pants."Since your brother is waiting inside, probably really mad, I think it will be a good idea if you talk to him while I...."I couldn't even finish that sentence.
"Alright."he answered."I will do that."he said in a strange voice and got out of the car. This was the most awkward and frightening thing ever.
I let out a deep sigh and looked around the driveway. Brooke hadn't came back yet. That was at least one thing I didn't have to worry about yet. Mustering up the courage to actually get out was the hardest. The walk inside felt like the longest walk of my life combined with the walk of shame. I couldn't believe I could possibly be.........pregnant.
"Hi strangers. Lol sorry I've been gone for quite a while. I don't expect for everyone who used to read this to still read it but I couldn't leave it unfinished as well as my other stories. Besides, I need to get back into my writing which means I'll be posting more. So to those of you who will read this, thanks and I'm sorry for the delay....Thoughts?? Hello's?? Comments??"
