The Unforgiven Chapter 4

Chapter 4:Some happiness?

 

When I krept up to my room, I was relieved to hear my father's loud snores. I thought for sure he would wake up and be waiting for me. I took off my clothes and put on a long shirt and a pair of shorts. Laying down, I thought about how fun tonight was. Even though it didn't last as long as I had wanted it to, it was one of the best nights of my life, which was a bit pathetic when you thought about it.

 

 

"Hey Crimson,"my dad called from the living room,"come here a second."

 

It was strange how at the most random times I could associate his not being an asshole to me as being nice. This must be something really important.

 

"Yes dad?"I said a little too panicky.

 

He was putting on his shoes and getting ready to leave. There was a sort of positive energy in the air which made me feel odd.

 

"Can I talk to you for a second? Come sit on the couch."

 

I was beyond afraid. I wondered if he knew that I gave him sleeping pills or if he had somehow found out that I snuck out.

 

Like he asked, I sat next to him on the couch. He looked me up and down before embracing me into a hug. I didn't hug him back but felt so amazingly strange. He never hugged me like this.

 

"Look, I know sometimes I let my anger get out of hand and I'm sorry."he moved his finger across my cheek where there was a cut, caused by him."You know, if anyone at school asks how you got this, you should say you were outside playing a game of ball or something."

 

So this is the reason behind the 'nice' father. He didn't want anyone questioning whether or not I was physically abused by him. Then again, I should've known he would act this way. It should be routine by now. All of the times I had to lie about getting hurt; climbing trees, trying to jump from the tree, etc.

 

"What are you talking about?"I smiled."I got this when I was trying to get Mrs.Thorton's cat from under the house."

 

"That's my girl."he smiled weakly."I'm off to work. Looks like we've got a lead on that murder suspect. I'm in a good mood today."he took out his wallet and handed my a twenty dollar bill."Go ahead and buy yourself something nice."

 

"Thanks dad."

 

Hush money was not always something I got. Only when things worked in his favor and he was in the best mood possible did I get money. Great, I would give it to Daisy and have her get me more of the sleeping pills she gave me for my father. Thanks dad. Really, thanks.

 

 

 

"What a fucking idiot."Daisy muttered."Of course he'd give you money. And I already told you, I'm not taking your money. I will give you all of the pills in the world just as long as you get out of that house."

 

"Thanks Dais'. It really means a lot to me."

 

"I know something else that will mean a lot to you too. Guess who's decided to enroll here?"

 

"Who?"I questioned, even though I had a pretty good idea.

 

"Ian."she raised her eyebrows."Eddy's showing him around. Isn't this great? Now we can go on double dates. Well, late night double dates."

 

"Right."I scoffed."How do you even know we like each other? I mean, he's obviously hot but come on. Me?"

 

"Crimson, you're a fucking babe and you know it. Half of the guys here have tried to get you to go out with them and you've turned them all down."

 

"That's because they were all pigs."I said in disgust, recalling all of their horny demeanors.

 

"But they were all hotties. Just sayin, maybe there's something there. Just give it a shot. You might find something."

 

"Yeah, I'm sure my dad would just LOVE that."I shook my head."Listen Daisy, he can't know about anything. You have to tell Eddy not to say a word either."

 

"I know, I know."she rolled her eyes."I just wish this town wasn't so fucking corrupt. I'd have you living with me in a heartbeat if it were different."

 

"That would be the ultimate dream come true."I sighed.

 

"Well, here comes a dream come true."she giggled.

 

I looked up from the table where we were sitting outside at lunch to see Ian and Eddy coming toward us. Now that I actually got to see Ian in the light, he was much more handsome than I had seen before. His hair wasn't as black as I had seen last night, but much more of a deep brunette. And his eyes were so much prettier in the sunlight. The way he dressed gave off the impression of a mysterious type. I couldn't put my finger on it.

 

"Fresh meat."Eddy clapped Ian on the shoulder before sitting down next to Daisy and kissing her on the cheek.

 

Naturally, Ian sat next to me. He was an inch away from me but that didn't bother me. It actually felt kind of nice in a weird way.

 

"Should've seen all of the chicks tailing after us."Eddy laughed."I thought I'd have to get a water hose. Look at them."he nodded past us to a group of girls staring at Ian with seductive smiles."They're about ten seconds away from ditching their lunch and eating you instead."

 

"Shut up."Ian laughed."It's creepy. They all look no older than fifteen. Besides,"he said as he turned toward me,"none of them are interesting."

 

I could just feel the smiles on both Daisy and Eddy's faces. In retrospect, this would look perfect. Two best guyfriends going out with two best girlfriends.

 

"How are you today Sunny?"Eddy interrupted our lingering glance."Any problems? Ow!"he said as Daisy shot her elbow to his gut.

 

"I'm doing just great."I smile and put my face in my hand, covering the odd shaped cut."Thanks for asking Eddy spaghetti."I teased.

 

When the bell rang, we hesitated like we always did. Even though Eddy neglected to come to school sometimes, it was like it was programmed into all of us that we were last to class.

 

"Sunny,"Eddy began,"Ian's got Algebra with you. Help the guy out."

 

"Sure thing."I smiled and watched as Eddy and Daisy left. She shot me a short wink before they left."So Ian, you ready for the most anticipated class in the universe?"

 

"As long as you're in there."he muttered.

 

I couldn't help but blush. It didn't help that my skin was such an ivory color either so I turned away and continued walking until we got to Algebra.

 

"Ah, new student."Mr.Phin said."Well there's a free spot in the back."

 

I sat in the back. The free spot he was referring to was in front of me and I had to admit it made me happy to know that Ian and I would be sitting so close.
