Sorry
|
The cool March air made me shiver as Mark and I walked arm in arm into the banquet hall. It was the night of my schools semi-formal dance, and Mark was my date. “At least we don’t have to wait in line this time,” he said. I was his date to his schools semi in November, and we waited for about twenty minutes until we were allowed to go inside.
After we went in, we had to wait for about a half hour to get our pictures taken. “How long do we have to wait?” Mark complained . He hadn’t stopped complaining since we got in line. He flipped open his phone - for about the hundredth time - to look at the time. I wouldn’t tell him how much this started to annoy me. Once we finally got our pictures taken, I found the table we were going to sit at with my friends. They all looked at Mark when we went to sit down. “He has nice eyes,” Tessa said.
“I know,” I replied with a girlish giggle.
Dinner went well, except for the fact that Mark kept obsessively looking at his phone. Once we were all finished, we were allowed to go on the dance floor. I wasn’t the best dancer, but at least I didn’t fall. We started to inch towards the front where most of the people were dancing. We were jumping up and down to one of the songs when Mark heard someone call his name. A tall, blond girl came running over and gave Mark a big hug. “I haven’t seen you in so long,” the girl squealed.
“It’s so great to see you!” he replied. “Tiffany this is Maggie.” He spun me around, and Tiffany waved and said hi. I did the same, and then Mark spun me back around. Then just like that the pair walked off the dance floor and into the front room.
I stood on the dance floor dazed, not comprehending what just happened. Mark and I weren’t exactly a couple, but seeing him walk away with that girl tore my heart to pieces. I danced a little with my friends, but I just wanted to go home and be alone. That’s always the way I tried to handle things by being all alone up in my room. I can think better when I’m alone. Right now with all the noise and all the people, I could barely hear my thoughts. I sat down and stared out at the dance floor. A slow song came on and I was definitely in no mood to dance. I saw him dancing with her and closed my eyes. I didn’t want to see anymore.
When the dance was almost over he came to me to try to explain, but even though he talked a lot, he never apologized. I couldn’t take it anymore. I ran to the bathroom with tears streaming down my face. I sat in a stall crying until I could hear that I was alone. I didn’t want people to see me. I got out, and stared at my face in the mirror. My eyes were red and puffy, and my face was blotchy and tear stained. I cleaned myself up as best as I could, and walked back to our table where he was waiting for me.
It’s been nine months since it happened, but it still hurts. I’ve barely spoken to him since then. He thinks I’ve forgiven him, but I’ve never even said anything about it to him. He’s trying to win me back, but he’s failing miserably. This time I won’t be stupid. I’m a lot stronger now, but I still wish he would just say he was sorry.
