Just a Dream (1) Awakening
|
“Good Morning Pennsylvania!” The DJ on the radio said. “It’s a cool 64 degrees on this beautiful fall Sunday.” I sat up, scared to death. I felt frozen to the bone even though I was sweating. I could feel tears rolling down my face, and I just couldn’t stop shaking. “Where am I?” I thought as I looked frantically around the room. It looked so familiar, but why was I here? Soon I realized where I was. This small space with it’s blue walls and ceiling was my room, and I was in my bed with my furry black and white cat, Jack, who was glaring at me because I woke him up from his 28hr. nap. The alarm clock radio was now blaring out some horrible pop song, so I turned it off. I laid back on my colorful pillow and stared up at the ceiling. “It was just a dream.” I told myself.
It was just a dream, but it felt so real. Nothing in it was remotely familiar to me. I couldn’t understand, I never had such a vivid dream before. I didn’t think I had enough imagination for that. I felt something jump on my bed. I sat up quickly and saw that it was just my other cat, Angel, who stared up at me with his big yellow eyes and let out a loud, squeaky meow. “Alright, I’ll get you two something to eat.” I told them, as they both jumped off the bed, and waited by my door. Still a little shaky I got carefully to my feet. I felt stiff, and still very tired. I tried not to fall down the stairs as the cats weaved through my legs. Some day’s I thought they were trying to trip me on purpose, and they would’ve succeeded today if I didn’t have a death grip on the railing.
Once I got them something to eat, I made myself a bowl of cereal, and sat down at the kitchen table. I was trying very hard not to think about the dream, but it started to come slowly back to my mind. I wondered where I was at. It was a long time ago I could tell by the clothes that I and the other men were wearing. Also by the fact that they were fighting on horses, and were coming face to face with there opponent instead of using guerilla warfare which, I think, is all the army uses anymore. I also thought about what they were actually fighting against. In the dream they looked like dark shadows against the sun, but they had to be people right? It was a dream though, and anything can happen in dreams. Especially seeing a man you know is not real, who your madly in love with, who was about to die because of you. “Oh!” I said out loud. I forgot about him. He was the true reason I woke up with tears in my eyes, and I didn’t even know who he was.
Before I could think about the dream anymore my mother came through the front door. “Mel, you awake?” She called up the stairs. She thought I was still up in my room. She was struggling with a few grocery bags in her hands, I got up from the table to go help. She was surprised to see me, and jumped back with a yell. “Melody Price, don’t ever scare me like that again!”
“Sorry, mom.” I said, trying not to laugh at the look on her face.
“Well, since your wide awake you can help me with these.” She handed me the packages and I took them to the table. I started to unpack them as my mother washed some dishes.
“Did you by any chance set my alarm clock this morning,” I asked. I was wondering why it went off. I never usually set it on Sunday’s.
“No, why?” she asked.
“It went off when you were gone. I thought you set it, so I wouldn’t sleep in all day.” This was getting weirder and weirder. First the dream and now my alarm going off when it wasn’t even set. What was happening to me?
“Well, maybe you set it, and didn’t realize it, you’ve done it before, or the battery could be dying.”
“Oh, I didn’t even think of that” I think I’ve lost my mind. I’m jumping to conclusions way too quickly. I just needed to relax and fully think this all through. “I think I’m going for a walk.”
“Are you okay,” she asked, a little worried.
“Yeah I’m fine, I just need to get a little fresh air that’s all.”
“Well, alright come back before lunch.” I ran up to my room and pulled on a pair of jeans, a sweatshirt, and sneakers.
It was so beautiful out. The sky was a clear blue with no clouds in sight. The sun shone brightly as it slowly moved up in the sky. The leaves on the trees I passed were all the wonderful colors of fall. A perfect carefree day. Too bad I had too much on my mind to care what the scenery looked like. I was to busy thinking about a barren cold field, and the person I loved so dearly dying in front of my eyes. I was so lost in thought I didn’t see that I walked in the middle of the street. Before I could move a car came speeding towards me. There was no time to move, there was no time to breath. I closed my eyes and waited for the end.
