Doing What Feels Right (2) The Call
|
Virginia was once again pacing back and forth across her room. The only difference this time was that Todd wasn’t there watching her. Just 1hour ago all her feelings about Todd changed when he kissed her. She didn’t know if these feelings were love, whatever they were was very uncomfortable, and yet truly amazing. Her legs felt like jello as she tried to walk, and she still couldn’t catch her breath. Her heart felt like it was about to explode out of her chest, and she was just exhausted.
She felt like she could fall asleep, but it was too early and she still had to figure out a way to break up with Danny. She didn’t want to see him in person because she didn’t know - and didn’t want to know - what would happen if Danny, the quarterback, lost his temper. She thought it was way to cowardly to email or text him, so she decided to call. It was still sort of cowardly, but at least she would be safe…..for now anyways. She dialed his number and a deep male voice answered.
“Hello?” Danny said.
“Is anyone there?” He said after a short pause. Virginia froze when she heard his voice. She quickly snapped back to reality.
“Oh, sorry, hi Danny.”
“Hey babe, what’s up?”
“Uh, nothing much, I just wanted to tell you something.” Her voice cracked on the last word, and Danny actually started to worry. An emotion he never usually has.
“What is it?” He asked, getting more nervous
“Um……how do I say this……I-I think we should stop seeing each other.
There was dead silence on the other line. “Oh no,” Virginia thought. “He’s probably on his way over now to kill me.” After a few tense seconds Danny answered.
“Who is it?”
“Who is what?” Virginia answered, confused and slightly angry.
“The guy your cheating on me with!” Danny yelled.
“WHAT?!” Virginia couldn’t believe her ears. “You think the only reason I’d break up with you is because I’m cheating?!”
“Well, what other reason is there?!”
“Oh, I can’t believe you!”
“Just tell me who it is, so I can go and beat the little punk up!”
“I’m not cheating.” Virginia tried successfully to calm herself down, but she knew it wouldn’t last long if Danny kept going.
“YOU LYING LITTLE SLUT!” Danny bellowed. “It’s that dork Todd you always hang around with isn’t it?!” He defiantly went overboard, but Virginia had to calm herself down before she said something stupid.
“Listen Danny, I never cheated on you. Not with Todd, not with any-”
“Your such a LIAR! Your always with that ugly, weird, nerd!” Virginia finally had it. Danny could call her a slut as many times as liked, but he definitely crossed the line when he insulted Todd.
“You know what Danny, I’d rather be with a weird nerd instead of a shallow, egotistical, jerk like you. Go to HELL!”
She slammed the phone back on it’s base and started to rub her temples. “Oh no,” She thought after a minute. “The last thing I said to him sounded like I was going out with Todd. Danny’s probably after him now!” She quickly called Todd to warn him, but she got his mom and she sounded a little worried.
“H-hello?” Mrs. Whitlock said.
“Um, Hi Mrs. Whitlock, it’s Virginia, is Todd there?”
“Virginia….Todd he…….tonight Todd was in a very bad accident…..his father is already at the hospital……I’m going to meet him there….” At this point Mrs. Whitlock was near tears. “….I have to go, bye Virginia” Then the phone went dead.
The next few minutes to Virginia were all a blur. She knew she was in a hospital running up to a nurses station, but she didn’t know how she got there. “Excuse me, do you know if Todd Whitlock is in this hospital?” She asked frantically. Before she got an answer she heard a girl cry to her “Virginia!” She spun around to see Todd’s 15 year old sister Lily bound toward her and hug her tightly. Even though Lily was 2 years younger than Virginia she was a lot taller then her 5’3”. “Oh Virginia, I’m so glad to see you.” She let go of her and Virginia asked quickly. “What happened? Is Todd okay?”
“He’s okay Virginia, calm down.” Virginia hadn’t noticed before that she was shaking uncontrollably. “Come sit down. It’s a long story.” Lily grabbed Virginia’s hand and guided her to a set of uncomfortable waiting room chairs.
“Todd dropped me off at the house and mom told him to get a few things at the supermarket. The police told us that a lady walking her dog saw Todd as he went down the street and stop at a red light. When the light turned green and he started to go, a car ran the red light and hit the passenger side of Todd’s car. The man had too much to drink and stumbled out of his car to see what happened. After he saw that he hit Todd’s car he tried to get away, but his car wouldn’t start. The lady called 911.” Lily started to sound angry as she kept talking about it. “What I can’t get over was that that drunken man walked away without a scratch, but my brother has a broken leg, broken arm, and 4 broken ribs. He also has a lot of scratches and bruises. Virginia do you think that’s fair?”
Virginia couldn’t answer. She was shocked at the unbelievable story. “He’s going to be alright.” Lily went on noticing that Virginia wasn’t speaking. “He’s going to a room right now. Mom went with him. She thought you would show up, so that’s why I’m here. Oh, she says she’s sorry for the way she acted on the phone. She was just really upset, and didn’t mean to scare you. The doctor is going to keep Todd here a couple of days. He just wants to make sure there’s nothing else wrong with him. Then it’s all bed rest and staying inside until school starts in a couple of weeks. Hey mom!” Mrs. Whitlock walked up to them looking a bit flustered. “Hi girls, Lily we have to go home and get Todd a few things so he’ll be comfortable tonight. Where’s your father?”
“He’s still making calls outside. Mom, can we see Todd?”
“Not tonight honey, you and Virginia can see him tomorrow. We better go get your father. Will you be able to get home by yourself Virginia?” Virginia finally shook off her shocked silence and quietly answered. “I’ll be alright.”
“Ok, well, we’ll se you tomorrow.”
“Bye Virginia.” Lily said, giving her another big hug. Then she got up and walked out the sliding doors with her mom.

Virginia couldn’t go home yet. Her hands were still shaking so much, she was barely able to dial the numbers to call her mom. She told her mom what happened, and that she was alright and would be home soon. After the call she started to walk aimlessly around the hospital until she found herself in front of the cafeteria. Surprisingly it was still opened, so she walked inside. The few times she’s been in the hospital she always wanted to come to the café. It was a very wide opened area with tables covering most of it. There was a big section in the middle that divided the area into halves. That’s where you got food and drinks, but what made the café beautiful was the huge skylight that right now showed the sky as it got darker.
Virginia sat at one of the tables to take in the breathtaking view. She watched the faded pink of the last rays of sun melt onto a lighter blue, and then fade into a dark blue/black with little barely visible stars. She loved this time of day, and how it made the sky look. She wondered if Todd was looking out his hospital room window staring at the sky like her. She was still shocked about everything that happened that day, but she was relieved that it would soon be over and that she would be able to see Todd tomorrow. She had no clue what she would say to him, she didn’t even know where to start. Would she tell him about Danny, or would she wait until after he was out of the hospital. She also didn’t know where their relationship would go from here. At the moment none of that mattered as she started to replay the kiss - and how good it felt - over and over again in her mind. She was reminiscing about the good parts of the day as she stared happily up at the darkening twilight sky.
