Doing what feels right

Romance Created on 7-9-07 Views(527) Story Rating G

Virginia paced back and forth in her bedroom, while her friend Todd sat on her bed staring patiently at her. “I am so sick of this!” Virginia yelled at the floor instead of Todd. The floor became the person she was angry at, and the more she walked all over it the better she felt. “I mean why did he have to be a jerk to me in front of my mom?”

Her soon-to-be ex boyfriend Danny always said mean things to her, but she usually tuned him out because he was so hot, but today he went over the line when he made a rude comment about the sundress she was wearing. “I can’t believe he would say that my dress was ugly in front of my mom. We picked that dress out together, and I think it’s really cute.”

“It looks pretty on you.” Todd said, but this didn’t register in Virginia’s muddled mind. By now Todd was used to her angry silence. He spent most of his summer on Virginia’s bed watching her wear out her carpet by walking off her anger.

Todd didn’t understand why she always called him to come over when something like this happened. He thought that she would rather talk to her mom, or her girlfriends, but somehow she wanted him there. He never questioned her because somehow he felt he should be there with her.

Todd was so lost in thought he didn’t notice she stopped walking until she started to yell at him. “Why, why, why! Why is it that I can’t have a normal relationship. Oh, I forgot I can’t have a normal relationship because I’m a very messed up person, and usually messed up people can’t have normal relationships. I tried so hard to make it work, but I’m tired. I went above and beyond for Danny, and he never even said thank you.”

Tears started to roll down Virginia’s cheeks. Todd was surprised, he never saw Virginia cry. He watched as she sat on the floor, crossed her legs, and put her head in her hands. Todd didn’t know what to do. Virginia never acted like this when she was angry with Danny. It was uncharacteristic of her to breakdown. Todd didn’t like Danny to begin with, but he hated him for making Virginia so upset.

Todd waited until Virginia was composed enough so she could hear what he had to say. “You know Virginia me and you, we’re normal people, Danny’s the messed up one. Your right though messed up people can’t have good relationships, but you can.”

Virginia looked up and saw Todd in a whole different light. His ocean eyes looked down to her with a lot of care and love. Her heart started to pound, and if she were standing her shaky knees would of brought her down to the floor.

Trying to push away the emotions she just felt, she got up slowly and sat next to Todd on her bed.

“Well what do I do now?” Virginia asked.

“Do whatever you feel is right.” Todd replied. He looked down at his watch and noticed what time was. “Oh, I have to go pick my sister up at practice.” Todd got up, and as he was looking for his keys and made sure his cell phone was in his pocket, he made a decision.

He turned around and looked at Virginia who was staring back up at him. He slowly bent over and kissed Virginia on the forehead. Then a little more hesitantly he brought his face down and kissed her softly on the lips. When he looked up and was satisfied that she didn’t look like she was about to kill him, he said to her in nearly a whisper, “Take care Virginia.” He then leaned back up, and with a little wave walked out of her room.

Virginia’s heart was beating out of her chest, and she had a hard time breathing. She sat frozen for a few minutes while she heard Todd’s start up and drive away. She was trying to figure out her thoughts about Danny, Todd, and everything that happened, until she came up with one conclusion: Being with Todd felt like the right thing to do.
